no bus tours - but you can basically walk around anything worth seeing in a few hours... its a very walkable city
there is a free bus around downtown from the works to some of the major points if your feet get tired... of course i would always suggest stopping for a beer when the feet get tired...

When you arrive just be sure to grab a Destination Winnipeg visitors guide, that should give you heaps of info, including phone numbers, and places to see etc. WPG is definately very walkable, and can be appreciated more that way, plus grab a water taxi to wellington cres. to start your way down Corydon ave. then over to Osborne!

Well have fun!

There's a interesting tour that goes through the exchange district

Steeped in history, the Exchange District National Historic Site holds Winnipeg's deepest and darkest secrets. Knowledgeable and dynamic tour guides examine legends of power, corruption and heroism while you enjoy an exceptional collection of architecture.

Mondays - Banker's Row
At one time there were twenty bank buildings lining Main Street between City Hall and Portage Avenue. This tour visits nine of the remaining buildings including the Union Bank, Canadian Bank of Commerce, and the Bank of Montreal.

Tuesdays - Winnipeg Grain Exchange
Highlights the creative integration of historic and modern architecture at Red River College Princess Street Campus. Explores the history of the world-renowned Grain Exchange association, influence of the Market Building, and Farmer's Row.

Wednesdays - Newspaper Row
The corner of Albert & McDermot was once known as Newspaper Row. Stories of fierce competition between the city's early papers make for a fascinating tour.

Thursdays - Theatre District
Winnipeg's vibrant arts scene dates back to the early 1900s. Learn to "fringe" as you explore unique theatres and their history. Highlights include Cinematheque, John Hirsch Place, MTC and a full interior stop at Pantages Playhouse.

Fridays - Winnipeg General Strike
The Winnipeg General Strike of 1919 was the longest and most violent labour conflict to occur in North America at the time. Learn about the experiences of the strikers as they strived for equality and fair conditions, from the halt of production citywide to the tragic events of Bloody Saturday.

i wouldnt walk to assiniboine park, there's not much to see there... forks is a short walk.. mint will require a bus ride

what would you recommend as a sightseeing 2 or 3 days or more. What is there to see, i thought assiniboine park had a lot, that it would be a full day. there is the mint, portage and main, the park, the forks and what else. I wish i would go in 2009, new skyscraper, airport terminal and the cool new museum

the local museum is pretty good
as is the art gallery
you can visit the legislature too
hangout in the village or corydon
the mint
the exchange
various smaller museums: including railway at the station, and air out near airport; dalnavert house; there's a fire department museum in st b

some nice national / provincial monuments out in st andrews but you'd need a car - fort garry and various old stone churches

assiniboine park is mostly open space with a decrepit zoo, and a small conservatory - unless you want a highish end lunch in the pavilion, it's not worth the trip

According to a Quebec tourist (my wife), Assiniboine Park made quite an impression when we visited last summer. I think she just liked the open spaces after living in a cramped Montreal rowhouse for so long. As for my opinion, I'm with Archiseek, there's not much to see there, unless you want to hit the zoo or see the Leo Mol sculpture garden. not really my thing, but that's just me.

if you like Ice cream you gotta go to the Bridge Drive Inn (BDI) on Jubilee, preferably around sunset. Order a goog. loosen your belt.

While I do enjoy Assiniboine Park on pleasent late or early summer afternoons, it is not particularly remarkable, unless you're wishing to see what an Olmsteadian park looks like if gone uncared for for years.

Huh? I don't know too many parks that have such nice formal gardens, an amazing sculpture garden plus an interesting art gallery and zoo. You guys are way too picky. There's nothing half as nice in Toronto, for example.

off topic - but I house-sat for the guy who invented the "goog" at the BDI.
Although I have never actually tried it.

on topic - I concur with harls - BDI is a good spot to enjoy some ice cream on a warm summers evening...

The Manitoba Museum is worth a look. The Nonsuch (sp?) alone is worth the price of admission...

If the weather's nice, and the schdule works, hit up a Goldeyes game as part of your Forks visit. I would also recommend walking the river walk from the Forks to the Legislature and/or St. Boniface. Take the water-taxi on your way back...

Speaking of which, there is also a water-taxi tour you can go on from the forks in the summer time. Probably worth a look.

also off topic - the bdi was apparently designed by les stechesen and is featured in the winnipeg modern book. no better place to start your winnipeg architecture tour than the BDI.

the water taxi costs $2.50
and regular bus fair is $2

its a 2 hour walk to asiniboin park... from downtown... i did the walk last summer 3 times lol cause i blew a tube out on my bike and for my bike ride threw winnipeg series

suggest renting a bike.... and go to kildoland park and stop at the 7/11 on main st and pic up some logs, hot dogs, and marsh mellows and have a picnic :D or rent a canoe at the forks for a couple hours and go for a padle up the assinibon river against the current that way ya just coast back and relax

I recommend taking it from the forks to the Hugo St. dock. Walk down Hugo to Corydon, then checkout Corydon and Osborne while walking back downtown.

The Leo Mol Sculpture Garden in Assiniboine park is good if you're a twelve year old who likes laughing at statues of naked chicks. Old people probably like it too. It's really not a bad place. If you do go there, walk across the pedestrian bridge to Portage and go to Sargent Sunday. But I wouldn't recommend walking all the way to Ass. park from downtown.

If biguc tells them to stop at Hugo Street dock they stop there.

Basically if you want a tour of Winnipeg, just ask any random person and they will probably be happy to drive you around for a couple of hours.

This year should be OK. The water levels will come down much faster this spring.

I have also heard rumblings about a new stop near Wolesley...
