Interesting Facts:
- BMW Headquarters (also BMW (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW) Tower, or literally from German: "BMW four-cylinder") is a Munich (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munich) landmark, which has been serving as world headquarters for the Bavarian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bavaria) automaker for over 30 years. The building was declared historical in 1999 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999).
- An extensive remodel commenced in 2004 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004) and was completed in 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006).
- The Tower was built between 1968 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1968) and 1972 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1972) and was ready just in time for 1972 Summer Olympics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1972_Summer_Olympics). Its inauguration followed on 18 May (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_18) 1973 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973). The building stands 101 m (roughly 331 feet) tall, is located in direct proximity of the Olympic Village (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_Village) and is often mentioned as one of the most notable examples of modern architecture in Munich.
- The BMW Museum (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=BMW_Museum&action=edit) is located right next to the tower. The tower's exterior is supposed to mimic the shape of a cylinder in a car engine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internal_combustion_engine), with the museum representing the cylinder head (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylinder_head). Both buildings were designed by architect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Architect) Karl Schwanzer (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Karl_Schwanzer&action=edit).
- The main tower consists of four vertical cylinders standing next to and across from each other. Each cylinder is divided horizontally in its center by a mold (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molding_%28process%29) in the facade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facade). Notably, these cylinders do not stand on the ground, they are suspended on a central support tower. During the construction, individual floors were assembled on the ground and then elevated. The tower has a diameter of 52.30 meters (roughly 171 feet). The building has 22 occupied floors, two of which are basements and 18 serve as office space (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Office).
- During the 1972 Summer Olympics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1972_Summer_Olympics) BMW branding was removed from the buildings to prevent undesirable product placement. Interestingly, BMW badging was also removed from the 2002 sedans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_New_Class#2002), which accompanied Olympic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_Games) marathoners during the competition. The branding was removed again for the building's cameo appearance in the 1975 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1975) film Rollerball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rollerball_%281975_film%29), replaced by large red circles, meant to stand for the fictional ruling Corporation of the future.
