The Manitoba-based Canad Inns hotel chain is putting the finishing touches on its latest venture — the company's first foray into the U.S. market.
A new complex, including a tower of hotel rooms, an indoor water park, restaurants and a gaming centre, opens May 1 in Grand Forks, N.D. The building is attached to the Alerus Center, the city's new entertainment and convention centre.
"Approximately $50 million has been invested in this city and community. It represents lots of opportunity for both Canadian and U.S. citizens," said Jeff Jasperson, the general manager of the new complex.
"It's a very universal project. In fact, I believe that it pulls the two countries together in its own way."
Canad Inns is well-known in Manitoba, where the chain runs hotels and bars in Brandon, Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg.
"This would be the first outside Canada, and I understand through our owner that we're planning other very exciting projects," Jasperson said.

That owner, Leo Ledohowski, has been busy lately.
The company recently purchased the Metropolitan Theatre in downtown Winnipeg and is said to be planning to turn it into a restaurant or nightclub showcasing the city's rock-'n'-roll history.
The long-vacant building, which has been designated a national historic site, must be restored to its early-20th-century glory, an undertaking that it's estimated could cost hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars.
Canad Inns also recently bought the old Canada Packers site in Winnipeg's St. Boniface neighbourhood.
Ledohowski has put forward a proposal to build a new stadium for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on the site, as well as an attached hotel complex and water park.
