Today's mast of Biedenkopf transmitter replaced a steel tube mast built in 1953, which was insulated against ground and therefore capable for AM-broadcasting ( although obviously never used therefore).
On Sackpfeife mountain, where the mast stands, there is also an observation tower ( http://www.hatzfeld-eder.de/stadt/eifa/p_sackpf.htm ) and a ski centre.
