View Full Version : San Francisco was full of geographers

PigBoy
Apr 26, 2007, 2:33 AM
Went to San Francisco last week with all the other geographers in the universe for the Association of American Geographers conference. (Any other AAG folks around here?) I didn't come away with a great variety of photos, but I did what I could. I didn't really get much in the way of neighborhood pictures and even spent one three-mile walk without taking any photos at all. But whatever. It was a nice time in a nice city!

Everything but this one is just in chronological order.

Without trying (I'll take your word for that) I think you produced one of the best SF threads I've seen. You do seem to have got lucky with great weather--SF is not always favored with blue skies. But also you seem to have a very good camera and took your shots from unusual places. I'm guessing many of them were from Coit Tower (or at least Telegraph Hill) and some of the others were from an upper floor of a hotel (I think the Marriott). Am I right?

Thanks everybody! The AAG conference is great because it's pretty much an excused vacation from school, at least in a geography department. I hope some of you other geography people will make it to next year's in Boston. Do it while you're a student if you can; it's a helluva lot cheaper! (Although frankly it'd be super easy to just wander in without registering, and plenty of people do.)

I'm guessing many of them were from Coit Tower (or at least Telegraph Hill) and some of the others were from an upper floor of a hotel (I think the Marriott). Am I right? Yeah, a bunch are from Coit Tower and the other elevated ones are from Hotel Nikko. The conference was at the Hilton next door but there was some overflow into the other hotel.

Yeah this STLgasm and JiveCitySTL are both haters. I actually think they're the same person who has 2 log in names, which BTW is totally lame. Everytime pics of SF are posted he has to post some remark to snipe San Francisco. He clearly has some type of grudge. That's ok if he does but he should keep his negative comments to himself and stay in East St. Louis which is where he's probably from.

it's nice to see some interest (and attendance!) of the AAG conference from college students. i went to the 1999 conference in williamsburg VA and i swear i was one of maybe ten total college students there. i had a blast nerding it up with the founder of mapquest and a CIA cartographer (whose world map i still have hanging on my wall). i wasn't even a geo major or minor -- i would have been but by the time i realized the interest was there i was tired of college and just wanted to get the hell out.

super pictures there. i haven't been to SF in eight years, oi.

haha, the "Roaring 20's" was my first strip club I ever went to during my senior year in high school. God damn that was a crazy night too; a female friend of ours got up on stage and and stripped down to her underwear with another stripper, lost my wallet (or more likely was stolen by a stripper) which was later found on a Muni bus a few days later, got drunk and blacked out, missed the last BART train back to the East Bay and had to have some friends drive all the way out to the city and pick us up. I left a really nice blue Polo jacket there too. But that strip club is ghetto, strippers are nasty and they have some cheap self serve soda fountain like at MacDonald's. Never been back to that place and never plan on it but this pick brought back some memories, fuzzy memories too.

Too many hills. And what's up with the obsolete streetcars? I don't think I'd like it at all. ;)

Seriously, gorgeous photos. I've made several trips there, and it's an amazing place both for the visuals and the climate.

If you pick your route, time the stoplights, and apply the "Idaho Stop" rule to some stop signs, you can coast all the way from the top of Twin Peaks to the Ferry Terminal on a bike without pedaling and without stopping. Going the other way probably wouldn't be as much fun.

nice set, cool, geography conference. I did my undergrad in Geography at Berkeley and worked as an "environmental consultant" - I tested leaky storage tanks at gas stations. I also worked for a geology company intepreting earthquake maps - sounds cool but totally lame. I moved on to Urban Planning to study cities and get a job outside of environmental consulting and GIS-cartography, academics, etc. I am now an Architect, went back for that degree too, but would love to get back to Geography later in my career. i love maps, maybe I should join AAG.

You should seriously consider (if you haven't already) including GIS in your studies, as there are lots of opportunities with GIS.
