Yes, CJSW is U of C's campus station, CJSR is U of A's station.
They're very similar stations both in format & content

there's a new FM station testing at 97.7, so far they are playing an eclectic mix of music.

They tend to do that while in the testing phase. Much of the time what they play is not related to their chosen format.

Any idea what the actual format will be??

No, they are playing a game of guess the format. So far they seem to favour playing instrumental music.

The CRTC filing (original was 2006-322, second was 2007-289) was for an Folk/Acoustic Specialty FM station.

That will never fly. I gave up listening to their test as they have a very short loop of music they repeat endlessly.

It'll probably end up being another Top 40 station. I mean we only have two and half of them already in Calgary

Considering they are pre-launch and likely still working out the technical systems having an short loop isn't surprising. Most of the new stations did similar until their launches, partially as they still have to pay the licensing fees for playing the music before they are officially in business, and won't actually bring in any revenue during that period.

Not likely, since making that type of change requires applying to the CRTC as their broadcast license is very specific in terms of what type of content can be played. And unlike some stations like Vibe (which has a license for hip-hop and R&B, but gets away with being more top 40 due to the %'s of the required music) it would be pretty hard to play top40 and folk in a sucessful combination.
There were concerns, specifically from CKUA about the content they wanted, but the CRTC overruled them as most of it was CKUA complaining that they are non-profit, and the news guys are for profit as I understand it.

New station CIGY 97.7 FM will be known as "magic 97". Rawlco Radio's other Alberta station CHMC 99.3 FM in Edmonton is called "magic 99".

....and in Saskatoon (Rawlco's home base) there is Magic 98.3FM. Not sure if they are owned by Rawlco though.

No more California 103... Their latest moniker is...

That logo looks vaguely familiar :sly: They are playing Top 40/pop hits from the 60s,70s and 80s.

California was a yawn so I'm not surprised at its demise.
It seems that nostalgia is a safer sell than new, but the 400-500,000 people who have moved here since XL's glory days wouldn't know or care. I wonder if they will play good old CanCon staple April Wine everyday!

Let me help everyone out here:
iTunes > Radio > 100s of stations
or for those in their car:
iTunes > podCast > iPod Plugin for the car
Listening to the radio is far to painfull these days with the commercials and annoying DJs.

Boris doesn't own a car, so thats not really a problem for him. Personally I've lost faith in the traffic reports in this city, they are nearly as unreliable as the city's road closure notices (I don't even think I can count the number of times they've mentioned an accident on the radio, that either was not at that location, or was fully cleaned up and dealt with yet they keep announcing it for some times upwards of an hour afterwards).

Thanks for the link Mersar. Have listened to it briefly and find that there's just too much country being played for my taste.

I listened in the car twice today and both times it was country. No thanks.
