The first two photos, especially when the cladding reaches full height, should be retaken and copyrighted by virtue of the awesomeness factor to the power of sideways-8.

BTW, either they center that *ridiculous* mess they have atop 20 Exchange Place or get rid of it....maybe cover it up with an exterior skin/whatever the word is.

Is... is that an antenna? Jesus, at least the Elder Wand Durst wants to stick on One World Trade has *some* semblance of aesthetics. That just looks like the architectural equivalent of a little kid's blocky, miscolored Lego abomination.

Silverstein Properties’ Janno Lieber and Serge Demerjian Talk WTC

By Daniel Geiger
9/11/12

What were some of the engineering challenges on 4 World Trade?

Mr. Demerjian: One of the exciting things we’re doing is creating an outdoor terrace on that setback for tenants to use as functional space, like Rock Center. That’s up on the 56th floor, which is taller than 7 WTC. Some of the challenge is the wind. How do you deal with that and create a windscreen? We’re talking about that, making sure it’s a usable, friendly space. There are some challenges with that and it’s great.

I think that might be our first confirmation that the setback will be open to tenants.

Seems that most new towers being built these days are all glass.
Where's the architectural excitement gone?

Love this building!

However, it can look a little too chunky when viewed from the south-west where it looks widest.
I also think that if the setback was a little lower down in the tower, it would look a bit more proportionate and slightly cooler.

All minor complaints though, this building is fantastic and tragically is/will be overpowered by the rest of the complex when complete.

From the air however, none of these problems are visible in context with the rest of the city.

Taking the Elevator and Going to the Bathroom at 4 World Trade Center

Matt Chaban
New York Observer
10 September 2012

Each year around this time, Larry Silverstein invites the foreign press (plus any local outlets interested in attending) into his World Trade Center buildings, whatever stage of construction they might be in. It serves as a useful backdrop for the flood global coverage the 9/11 anniversary always attracts as well as an equally heartening and frustrating symbol of progress, sometimes halting, at the site. Maybe a new tenant will come out of it, too, which does not hurt.

On Friday, the developer opened the construction gates to cameramen and reporters, photographers and radio producers from across Europe, Asia, South America and Africa. They got likely their first look inside the recently topped-out tower, which is about a year from completion (last year, the anniversary events were held inside 7 World Trade Center, with the mayor in attendance). While being led around by Silverstein Senior Vice-President Dara McQuillan, The Observer got a glimpse of something we had yet to see: the swanky new elevators and minimalist bathrooms.

They are part of the lower floors set to be turned over to the Port Authority, part of a 2006 deal to finance and begin construction on the site. Silverstein Properties hopes to hand them off by the end of the month, Mr. McQuillan said, when the Port will bring in its own designers and engineers to fit out the space for thousands of office workers on more than 30 trapezoidal floors.

“It all fits with Maki’s super minimal style,” Mr. McQuillan said, taking us inside one of the elevators. He explained that the marble on the floor was selected and cut especially because of its similarity to wood grain. In the bathroom, the corner guards wear designed to lay flush with the tiles, instead of on top of them. The paper towel dispensers are hidden under the mirrors. Everything is clean, unobtrusive, almost perfect.

How do you make an office building, one of the biggest and newest in the city, disappear? It’s the little things that count.

Although I'm not a fan of the bathroom tiles. They look too much like shower tiles from a 80s era high school.

Which failed pretty hard. The Dubai Marina has got to be the ugliest concentration of supertall skyscrapers in the world. :yuck:

I was speaking strictly about his comment, that being architectural excitement. You don't see it anywhere except in very new and rapid growing cities like Dubai. Even though the architecture may not be to your liking, at least it's exciting. They're not all glass boxes, they have a nice (IMO) striking design to them.

they were glass and aluminum rectangular prisms... I think they were amazing for the fact that ~100 floors [because the middle mech and lobby floors were in the core or only over the transformers] had a 200+ foot wide square floor plate. I wonder how many current buildings have as much usable space on the 107th floor as each of the twins had.

back to One World Trade Center: I haven't had time to work on my models, maybe next weekend.

I'm sorry if this has already been covered, I tried to find it but I couldn't. I notice there are what look to be two exhaust ports sticking out of the East face of the building fairly high up. I assume these are permanent? Interesting how they are the only blemish to an otherwise perfect wall of glass.

Yeah I don't get why people hate on it so much. I understand the concept is really simple, and the ground-level area looks very 70's/80's, but it works for me. Goldman Sachs + the new WTC buildings fit perfectly alongside it as well.

They're perfectly functional buildings, no one is going to tear them down obviously. But I think they fit perfectly with the new WTC complex. Just look at those pictures, in my opinion they help to frame these four new tall and super-tall buildings along with the open space in the middle.

They are not just functional, they are beautiful. I think they perfectly frame downtown. They way they meet the sky is better than 90 of buildings out there. Simple but elegant.

It's all a matter of taste, but I completely agree. These are easily some of the most beautiful buildings in NY. And the experience it offers at ground level (Winter Garden, Plaza, etc.) makes it one of the nicest areas in Manhattan, I think. Couldn't imagine NY without the WFC.
