those Vale pix make me sad. I wanted to live there but the only ones I could afford were the one bedrooms, and like HELL if I am living in a place that small. Camelview looks waayyyyy cool thats my next goal is to buy one of those.

Phoenix has great architecture if you just know where to go look. Excellent photos Joel! Those condos...man I want to live in them. I am impressed by Optima Camelview. The sheer uniqueness of the futuristic architecture impresses me. Also, that shot with Portland Place Phase 1 and the Japanese Friendship Garden is awesome!

Joel, thanks for the great array of shots. Looks like you always keep your cam handy...great idea for someone who seems to really get around. It's my 18th wedding anniversary today so I better be careful about any comment on the culinary festival except to say... YIKES!... and there was food there too?

The Optima Camelview project is tremendous. I love the cantelivers everywhere. I didn't realize what a huge project that is with over 700 units. Lots of well-healed yups down there.

Great job showing the hipper side of Phoenix (YES, it does exist)

Great pictures. Modern architecture does abound. I always wondered what more of the Vale looks like. Too bad Tempe residents hate that building with a passion.
I currently live not too far from Kierland. I wouldn't call it the finest example of New Urbanism, but wrap the parking garage, and it would have a pretty good shot. Also at least pretend to address Scottsdale Rd. better. I think the picture from the parking lot that you took exemplifies its shortcomings quite well. Note the lack of parking spaces.

I dislike the Vale, it may look cool, but its hideous non appropriate architecture for the Valley. Metal stair cases and metal everywhere? That just doesn't make sense for the summer heat. Plus Bruder seems to have an obsession with hideous bright colors in a lot of his buildings (you see the Central library with this too). I like a lot of Bruders stuff, but he often mars it with one or two bizarre features.

Yeah I agree with your assessment of the Vale. I love the Phoenix Central Library, on the other hand. I don't mind the bright colors, and the design is very desert-sensitive. The only explanation I can think of for the Vale is maybe the developer went all cheap on him? It just doesn't work, especially not for that area of Tempe.

Oh I like the library too, just not the few uses of super bright colors. It does look a bit bland from the outside, but overall I like it.

The Vale renderings were extremely vague and futuristic looking.
From the looks of the renderings, it seemed that the patio screens were to be of resin. The only colors shown were gray, yellow and the Bruder green. (no offensive Crayola box rainbow) The courtyard was supposed to be lined with beautiful shade canopies.
But.... those canopies were rejected by the City because of fire ratings.
So- the new approved canopies were altered to appear circular and cloud like....

Then the City gave the developer the C of O. (Andrew :yuck: )
So.... the developer (Beck) never went back and put in the canopies.
(Even though the canopies were at the Grand Opening/ HOA turn over event and owners were never notified of any change in plan from the City.)
Vale buyers got screwed.
The interior finishes were value engineered.
The retail was weak at first.... Owners were never told that the retail promised was not a possibility because of parking constraints.
The condos pretty much need a remodel to justify the price tags.

But, to clarify, the stairwells and stair railings are powder coated steel. They are not hot.
And I have yet to see a place attract females as The Vale does...
After the finishes are upgraded, there is no reason why these places shouldn't complete with anything on the market in their price range.
The spaces rock and roll and that is what is important afterall....
The crowd there is all young and hip.

People either love or hate the place, but everyone that drives by gawks...
In all- I am still a fan.
But- I'd have appreciated knowing the changes prior to purchasing one myself....

I love the Vale, it's about time someone threw a wrench in the works with something daring. He could have built a giant green soft serve ice cream cone and I would welcome it because it is finally something different.

Especially when you look at the horrendously boring development across the street, now that is what cheap looks like.
