My head. :) I just looked at the stats and figured "About 44 years should do it" and made up that time line. :)

If we reach 1,000,000 by 2050, Winnipeg's population would have to increase by around 7200 per year (300,000 divide by 42).
With Vids prediction around 6,800 per year.

Maybe the real question is will I still be alive when Winnipeg population reaches 1 million?
Thinking about, I'll be old be 2050. Maybe there will be a new old?

no way at the current rate (census 2006) it will be 878 208 by 2050. According to my calculations the metro population will reach 1M in 2074, But the growth rate has doubled since the 2001 census so it is possible but unlikely. Very unlikely since winnipeg is no longer a super power and a money magnet.

Our Immigration numbers are double what they used to be; less people are moving away; more coming back...it can be achieved.

By the way someone sad it should grow a certain amount of people per year, that is false since it will grow slower at first and grow with more people. The correct rate should be 4,2269077% per 5 years (censuses) and right now it is 2,7, not looking to good.

Immigration is 10,000 now. and there planning to increase it to 20,000 by 2020 with a increase of 1,000 new immigrants a year. If a majority of them stay in Winnipeg, the population can go up.
Also if less people move away from the city and province this will also help.
Then there is the birth/deaths rate which I have a feeling will be decreasing when the baby boomers come to the age.

Limiting supply creates demand. Basic economics!
Besides money can raise the roof at MTS Centre for an extra level if needed.

At the current rate (0.15% per year), Winnipeg will have a population of 1,000,000 in the year 2295
In order for Winnipeg to hit 1,000,000 people by the year 2050, the city would need to start growing at 1% per year

1% ~ 7,000 a year ... very achievable.

What is the population of Selkirk CMA? ...
Too bad this isn't included in Winnipeg Metro stats, as the two cities are becoming more linked every year.
If Wnnipeg's population was counted by American cenus .. it would easily be over 800,000.

In case you have never been to a stadium you cant just raise the roof and add another level on top, you need more space. You build the upper levels not on top but still expand in area or else some people wont see. Take a look at this.

A million ? It's certainly possible but it's 43 years away and alot can happen in four decades. Since , as has been pointed out, the bigger a city gets, the more people it attracts (as a general rule of thumb) I think it's reasonable to assume the CMA at least would be around a million. On the other hand, we could hit a million by 2030 or we could get nuked. I mean, who knows ?
CMA at a million or so seems reasonable though. Besides, I'm pretty sure that the projections I saw in the Waverley West study put us on track for roughly a million in the CMA by that time .

If scientists are correct and the artic seaway becomes a year round passage. Churchill will quickly grow into a major port .. this will greatly enhance, expand and return Winnipeg's place as a major global centre of trade.
If this happens that million mark won't be 4 decades away. As Winnipeg will become the gateway to the artic seaway .. and thus Asia and Europe will be much closer and cheaper than other ports.

growth projections show 812 000 by 2026....only 19 years away....it is likely that the following 25 years will achieve the 190k needed, especially as the CMA boundary will likely expand by then to include the tens of thousands of people north of the city that are not currently counted.
http://www.winnipeg.ca/cao/pdfs/population_projection_data.pdf
lots can happen in 40 years as we have seen in the past....if hydrogen fuel cells become the next wave for personal automobiles, which is quite likely, then manitoba will once again become a 'money magnet', with our substantial water and hydroelectric resources.
people probably didnt think in 1970 that calgary would be over a million in 2006....the exponential growth was caused by a change in global economic structure...we are inevitably in line for another global shift with gas prices rising beyond affordability...
water will certainly be the next high demand global commodity....the only question is when will it happen?....when it does, winnipeg stands to be a growth leader in the future.

Well, hope does spring eternal. Double entendre fully intended.
In any case, it seems perfectly reasonable to assume that Winnipeg's CMA would reach a million or so by 2050. In fact, it seems to be precisely what's going to happen. While I do indeed hope you're statement proves true (natural causes....I'm not malicious) it seems to me that your longevity is the only truly unknown in this equation.

Okay, I can see I offended some people here so let me offer my aplogies. It was an off the cuff remark that added nothing to this thread. Thanks to Spocket for atleast hoping that my death comes about due to natural causes. I am hoping for the same sometime around the year..say...2050!
But as far as Albertaboys comments, you really need to get over your hate for Calgary. I have seen many of your posts in other threads and you always go out of your way to bash Calgarians and Calgary. It must suck to be so jealous. And by the way, we can't wait for you to get the hell out of our city too. Do us a favour and don't come back!
