A $132-million restoration of two historic buildings is just getting underway in downtown St. Louis. Pyramid Companies of St. Louis is renovating the MAMMOTH Arcade-Wright Buildings (http://www.builtstlouis.net/arcade2.html) in Old Post Office Square, which will see nearly $700-million in development once all the pieces are completed.

The Arcade-Wright buildings, which sit south of the Old Post Office Building, will feature 45,000 square feet of retail space, 47,000 square feet of office space, 60 apartments and 153 condominiums.

The Arcade-Wright (http://www.builtstlouis.net/arcade2.html) buildings, which span a city block between Olive and Pine at Seventh Street and sit directly across from a MetroLink subway station, will feature a Starwood aLoft Hotel (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/alofthotels/index.html) as well, according to the St. Louis Business Journal.

View from the Arcade Building of renovated Old Post Office Building and District. Notice the "Alexa" sign. The building is going to be turned into condos and retail as well.

The incredible number of buildings that St. Louis has for conversion is really fantastic. I really love the area around the City Museum. What did this area look like before the loft conversion boom kicked in?

the area around the City Museum as recently as a decade ago was primarily the clube district with numerous urban pioneers occupying the upper levels of the warehouses. The number of buildings available for rehab is quickly decreasing and the era for new infill constructions is quickly approaching. This past decade has been a very exciting time for st. louisans, and it's only getting better as we see the positive results from all this investment. "The city is back, back the city!"

The Arcade is a really special building to me. It is one of the true gems of the city.

Wow, after all I've been hearing about St. Louis in this forum, I just assumed that this block would have been restored by now, as well as everything around the post office.

Then I followed the link provided in the first post, and visited the 'Built St.Louis' website. Jesus, talk about depressing...

I had no idea they destroyed the Century bldg! As an architecture major, living there in the 80's, I thought it was one of the top 5 buildings downtown, after Wainwright, the post office, the Adams building and maybe the old Famous-Barr store. I thought for sure that it would be a keeper.

Anyway, I'm glad they're doing something. I have a sweet spot for anything with terra cotta.

This is most fascinating.

There is a grassroots effort just getting off the ground to save the arcade buiding here in Dayton, so I would love to know the details on how this one was saved...how the financing was put together, who the developer is, etc.

I would appreciate if you could give a brief history or if you could connect me to someone in St Louis who I could ask.

Thanks!
