I made this using 3D Studio Max. I've got more work to do on it yet.

I lost my 3D Studio max access from earlier, and lost most of my buildings etc.. It's kind of nice starting all over. I'm looking at ways of getting more greenery into the pics. Should be fun.

The city looks incredible.
The canals look very regular and planned while the larger buildings are very indivualistic.
The only critical comment I could make is that all architecture looks modern and post modern; there is no Art Deco! (of course if you like only modern buildings, it is your city after all)
Anyway, great job.

Awesome looking city Surreal! Not to nitpick, but some of the areas off to the edge of the city look like empty city bocks. Other than that, it's an outstanding picture.

Amazing city surreal. I've been wanting to start up a sketchup city and import and retexture it in max.

I've been using Max for about 3 years now and recently updated to 8. I only modeled on the side, but now the architecture firm I work for discovered I knew how to use the software and want me to have realistic lighting in the renders. I can do interior lighting, but I suck at the whole daylighting thing so......

How the HELL did you do the sunshine on those buildings in the pic? What lighting systems/objects? What are your render settings?

Hey I noticed one of the Transformers Movie Posters had a city skyline that had a lot of buildings from Surreal Cities! Great job to you (unless they were stolen)!

Outside daylight lighting is quite tough. I usually have to play around with it quite a bit

I use an Omni light (quite far away from the objects) with a slight shade of yellow. I put another omni light in the scene that doesn't illuminate or cast shadows, it's there only to provide a bit a voulme light.

Global Illumination (Indirect lighting) is huge when it comes to providing realistic outside lighting. Do you have the mental ray renderer as an option for renderers?

If you use Brazil or Mental ray or some type of renderer like that, you'll have an option for GI.

You're right, I took a look at the transformer posters and one of my cityscapes "Metropolis II" is used in the background on a couple of them. Weird, I don't remember giving permission, but maybe I did but didn't realize what it was for.
They've also morphed the picture somewhat so I don't even know know if they need permission.

Here's the full sized version of the image, with a few changes. I'm going to make another cityscape. a remake of a previous image called "island cities", with the new image using these buildings.

I can't fathom how you have the patience to include such detail. For someone like me, a single building would take hours upon hours with that level of detail! Keep up the great work!

Anthony

PS: Have you considered making a small to medium-size city, like something along the lines of Knoxville, Madison, Boise, Spokane, Wichita?

Call your lawyer!
It looks like you put a tremendous amount of effort into your city. Even if the movie poster used a modified version - they still used your work to save time and money.

Hey I just saw your reply.

Definately tell them. Hundreds of millions of people have potentially seen that poster, and you may have a good case on your hand. Just my thoughts.

Incredible, thank you for the new wallpaper (if you don't mind). I was totally not expecting that. It's kind of like Chicago (or Venice in the very distant future) with the water running through the city.

Hayward, the lighting in the scene is one Omni light for actual lighting (with a intensity setting of 1.6), and a second omni light for haze. The second light is set to exclude all objects from shadow and lighting, and is the light chosen in the volume light section.

Here is the final version of ther rendering. A few changes from the last one, and it's rendered at a higher sample rate just for good measure. I've begun work on the next cityscape, which will be using maost the the same buildings from this scene, but a different setting.

Hmmm...I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but I can't see the difference in this rendering compared to the first one. I think I have bad eyes, but do you think you could point out the difference?

Otherwise, incredible city mate! Keep at the awesome work!

Actually there isn't much of a difference. The render smaple rate was increased so as to give the image a bit better resolution. A few more buildings have been added. That's about it.
