That is a cool looking tower. Is there a height restricition in Century City? All the buildings appear to be about the same height.

Nice buidling. I was wondering about the height restriction too. The only thing I can think of is Santa Monica airport is pretty close by. But there are taller buildings in West L.A. than in Century City.
I would prefer this building to be 10 stories taller. But, it still is a great addition to the skyline. Thanks! :)

There aren't taller buildings in West LA, compared to Century City. Most of the Westwood / Wilshire towers are in the 20 - 25 story range. Ill try to find out about a height limit in CC. i dont think there is, but lets see.

Isn't this the tower that could eventually replace the St. Regis? If so, it's not under construction yet. There's a very large building under the process of deconstruction that still has to be done away with. It could still end up a parking lot.
This should be in proposals.

Sorry about that. I thought the cluster there by the 405 (like the KB headquarters) were 30+. My memory is a little hazy, it's been 5 years since I lived in LA.
I am thrilled to see all the new projects though, seemed like nothing happened for the longest time (outside of Marina Del Rey).

January 2008
The tower structure has reached level 8 with a 6-day-per-floor cycle. The MEP rough-in is progressing through level 3 and the top track has begun on level 3 and 4. The exterior skin of precast for the high-rise and exterior stone for the low-rise is set to begin this month.

Construction Watch: The Century and Its $27 Million Penthouse
By Dakota
February 20, 2008
Jean Nouvel's leafy blade (http://la.curbed.com/archives/2008/02/nouvel_report_2.php) isn't the only high-end project planned for Century City--construction continues on The Century, the 42-story, Robert A.M. Stern-designed building, a Related project that'll be topped off by a two story, five-bedroom unit listed for $27 million (http://la.curbed.com/archives/2007/11/yowzer_the_cent.php). Sadly, floor plans of the penthouse are only available to interested buyers, the plans protected to stave off the cat burglars, we imagine.

This is a tough building to photograph up close, only because there's nowhere to park nearby (that you don't have to pay for). I had to park illegally in a "no stopping anytime" zone, throw on my hazards and hope no one nailed my car while I ran across the street. I count at least 16 floors.

Construction Watch: The Century in Century City ([http://la.curbed.com/archives/2008/04/construction_wa_63.php)
By Neal Broverman
April 28, 2008
Architect Robert A.M. Stern's The Century is rising like a phoenix in CC; the 42-story stunner looks about half-done now. One caveat—except for the Century City mall and its wicked-good food court, the neighborhood is an after-hours ghost town (kinda like New York in I Am Legend but scrubbed clean). But that hasn't stopped someone from snapping up the $15 million penthouse (http://la.curbed.com/archives/2008/02/what_century_ci.php). Meanwhile, what's interest like in one of the priciest Westside condos of them all--the $27 million penthouse (http://la.curbed.com/archives/2007/11/yowzer_the_cent.php)?

Los Angeles condo sells for $2,848 (per square foot) Candy Spelling's penthouse in Century City will have a $47-million view.
http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-condoprice22-2008jul22,0,856602.story
Excerpt-
The top two floors of a Century City residential tower still under construction have been sold for a record $47 million to Candy Spelling, the widow of TV mogul Aaron Spelling.
The 62-year-old heiress with a reputation for embracing opulence will be moving out of Los Angeles County's largest home -- a 123-room, 56,500-square-foot mansion on six acres in the Holmby Hills neighborhood off Sunset Boulevard.
Her new home will be less than a third the size of the old one -- just 16,500 square feet -- but with a killer 360-degree view spanning the horizon from downtown Los Angeles to Santa Catalina Island. The condominium building called the Century is going up next door to the Century Plaza Hotel on Avenue of the Stars and will be completed in late 2009.
http://www.latimes.com/media/photo/2008-07/41154900.jpg
Building developer Related Cos. of New York said Spelling would work with her own architects and designers to customize her space on the 41st and 42nd floors. But a few of the details have been negotiated.
The lower floor will have a living room with two working fireplaces, a dining room for 25 guests, and staff quarters. The top floor will house the bedrooms including a 4,000-square-foot master suite, a massage room, an exercise room, a conservatory complete with rose garden, and a swimming pool and deck.
Builders have yet to start construction of the top of the building, so they were able to make structural adjustments to accommodate the indoor pool that opens onto a balcony, said David Wine, vice chairman of Related Cos.

i never like this building from the day it was rendered. it's just plain ugly. regardless, i'm sure plenty of us here love it. after all, it's a highrise, and it's in LA. what's not to love about it?

Like I said, it looks like something straight out of Dubai.

To be honest, I was excited when I heard LA would get a Robert A.M. Stern building, but a little disappointed when I saw the design. It looks like a poorly thought out, cheaper version of 15 Central Park West. The problem is that a building like 15 CP West only looks good in it's context. In the context of Century City it looks way out of place, with no pre-war architecture nearby to make it relevant. This tower would have fit right in on Wilshire Blvd with a lot of the other Post-modern craptastic towers like The Californian.

Okay good I'm not the only one who hates it, yeah I hate it, I really miss the old hotel that was demolished (wasnt it designed by Minoru Yamasaki?) The building isnt THAT bad but it just killed the skyline, had it been built a few blocks west on Wilshire Boulevard I would have loved it.

Hmm, I didn't know a Japanese architect did the old hotel, I sort of liked it and always though it would fit well in Tokyo (well, when I was growing up, at least). The Stern tower would be better on Wilshire, with the Californian and all. Too bad Nouvel got axed and we ended up with this. Again, not terrible, but it totally does not fit Century City.

Minoru Yamasaki was born here in America and his firm was based in Michigan. He's ethnically Japanese, but he grew up as an American. He designed the World Trade Center, among other things.

Thanks! I think it basically looks like a giant Twinkie with glass. But it's still a cool addition to the skyline.

It could have been glassier and have a more distinctive tripartite form, but I also like the contrast on the skyline.

Wow, people actually complaining about this tower not fitting in? Its curves and details are definitely more interesting than the blocky, squat towers that make up most of Century City. Century Plaza Towers are great, but people have different preferences for residential buildings.
Compare the postmodern Nakatomi ;) Plaza and this one, this tower is more art deco than postmodern.

^^ Yeah, I LOVE this tower and definitely can see its Art Deco influence! What a great addition to that area!

I apologize for how lousy these shots are, washed out due to bad light, taken while driving, and my camera has a really dirty sensor...
...nonetheless, I took these while driving through Century City yesterday...

While i've decided that while I like the overall shape of this tower, the facade seems really fussy. There's something wrong with the massing at the top too, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Like many others, I feel that this tower would be perfect on Wilshire in Westwood, but feels a bit alien in Century City. CC has a much more modernist vibe to it, and this tower has none of that.

I was just at my parents' place and managed to see the building in the late afternoon and evening. It looked to be pretty much finished, and there were some units that had lights on in the evening. I guess people might be actually living in there now? The next time I'm out there I'll try to take some pics from the rooftop.
