Whatever gave a college student that idea?

I don't know why, but I'm kinda surprised Sac County has a higher average than SD County, and that Contra Costa is so high. But I guess CC could be explained by commuters going to all their tech jobs further into the bay.

Contra Costa has a large, high-end suburban cluster--Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, Danville, etc. BART goes out there.

Very true, San Ramon is a gold mine for high paying jobs with Bishop Ranch, the largest office park in Northern California.

Speaking of San Ramon, its also the world HQ of Chevron, 4th largest company in the world.

Alameda above Marin???

Alameda County has a much more diverse economy and far more professional and high earning jobs. AC has a blue collar image but its one of the most white collar places of employment in the state these days.

Actually, Santa Clara and San Mateo are still trying to catch up to where they were in 2000. There was a huge drop between 2000 and 2001 due to the tech bust. But things are picking up.

Wow. I just had a huge brain-fart. I was thinking of Solano when I saw Contra Costa. :dunce:

Orinda/Moraga/Lafayette are very tony but I was under the impression that the rankings were of salaries paid in the county, not salaries paid to residents of the county. Most of the wealthier residents of Contra Costa work in SF, I suspect. But maybe some high wages are paid in those 680 corridor office parks. And, yeah, the CEO of Chevron by himself would drag up the average quite a bit.

Once again, I think the ranking is based on salaries paid in the county, not salaries paid to county residents (who, in the case of Marin, often work in SF). Marin is mostly residential and the wages paid there tilt toward people providing services to those who live there. That would mean there are some doctors, lawyers and such, but also a lot of waiters, maids, gardners and others not known for high salaries.

You wrote that twice, but it appears incorrect.

From the US Department of Commerce, Bureau of Economic Analysis website:

Per capita personal income is calculated as the personal income of residents of a given area divided by the resident population of the area. In computing per capita personal income, BEA uses the Census Bureau's annual midyear population estimates.

I'd say Marin's figures are polarized... on one end, there are those that commute to high payin jobs in the city, on the other, there are the artists and hippies on the west side of the county.
