Nice one Surreal. This is one of my favorite angles of the Bow
Yeah, the top pieces of steel are reaching up to what will be the 39th floor, so just 19 floors above that :)

The two floors after the next horizontals in the diagrid will be louvres (to match what's at the bottom, I believe. 3-4 more floors of glazing to go before that.

Right. I mentioned Hong Kong and London, because they each have a unique Foster which were studied extensively, when I was a first year architecture student(The Gherkin was just starting construction). I expect The Bow to be included in such curriculum in the coming years.

Hmmm. You're new around here, maybe that's it. Some of us old-timers are used to occasionally commenting on somebody else's post, without expecting it to turn into a school-boys' pissing contest. We expect a discussion, or a thank-you for the additional information.
BTW, I find your repeated comparisons to anything US, unflattering of Canada. The US could aspire to be much more like Canada, than the other way around...not that there's any hope of that--too arrogant and the people too doped-up on propoganda.

New to skyscraperpage, not new to the concept. I haven't notice my comparisons being US centric, but thanks for pointing it out, I surely will stop doing that! But the reason I chose Houston was because I find Calgary can relate to Houston in a lot of different ways, even though Houston is 5 times the size of Calgary (more-so than any other city in the world, besides maybe Denver, or Edmonton :P ).

I don't think The Bow will end up in first year architecture courses. The Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank is one of my all-time favourites and was quite the important structure historically. The Bow is a nice structure, quite striking, and going to be a great building, but it doesn't have the historical architectural significance of HKSB.
I am loving the updates everyone is posting. One of my favourite structures going up right now.

I travel to Houston a fair bit and to be honest I don't find many similarities. Nothing against either city, I just don't see any similarities. Outside of both cities having alot of oil company head offices, there is very little in common.
Calgary to Denver I can see more in common.

It's the southern block for the Bow development. It includes 6 stories of underground parking for the Bow, and will eventually include a development including the preserved facade of the York hotel.

There is a revised Development Permit that was submitted a few weeks ago for the south block. Not sure how extensive the changes are (someone mentioned they are minor - mostly related to use?), I guess we'll wait and see. Unibrain, any insight?

I haven't seen the DP, or have any inside information ( and I certainly could be wrong on this), but I was assuming that this revised DP was actually to add the south block - it had not yet been approved before. The original base building DP just allows for work to be done up to grade on the south block (and states explicitly that the above grade stuff is in a future DP), thus a permit revision was going to be required to build the south block above grade.
I don't think it means that any changes have been made to the plans for the south block - though I'm sure there's AT LEAST minor tweaks - there always is.
My interpretation (without anything to back it up) was that perhaps they want to start building the south block shortly, not waiting until the tower is complete for a year, as had been talked about a while back. Perhaps the plan is still to wait, but this DP revision had to happen anyway. The +15 connections will have to be added later too. (unless they are included with the south block revision)

With the glut of office space, I'm going to assume that only the south block will see the light of day for some time. They'll hold the other property for a while and either sell it when the commercial market upticks or develop it themselves, but I can't see that happening till at least 2017(?) barring a major head office relocation to Calgary to sop up the vacancy.

That I could see, but I could also see EnCana/Cenovus building for their own needs yet again. They really shouldn't care what building their own building will do to the rest of the office market, it won't affect them anyways. Unless of course they would be planning to build more than they need and try and lease out that space to other clients.
You Need A Thneed
Mar 11, 2010, 5:59 PM
I could certainly see Encana/Cenovus building for their own needs despite the market. I'm certain they already have some kind of rough idea of what they want to build on the CUPS/Andrew Davison site. Of course, it would be very preliminary. The parkade plans are drawn with the future joining of parkades in mind.
They probably have a preliminary idea of the tower they want to build where the old Salvation Army warehouse is too (the North West Traveller's building is staying). The plans have provisions for a parkade connection there too. The old Salvation Army thrift store (built in the 70s - and being used as the Ledcor offices right now) will be torn down as current construction progresses to make way for the +15 connection to the Telus building.

It's only my opinion, but I think it's the best tall building in Canada period.
It's not only your opinion, if I might say...

Didn't the original site plans say something about future residential?

too bad its not original planned height which would have been closer to 1000ft.
Height is everything sorry, just like size....its a beauty though...

I agree with you on the first statement, shadowing horseshit!
I don't on the second... as much as I like height, I wouldn't trade the Bow for that 300m white box you have in Toronto!

Height is by no means everything, not by a long shot.

That's just hearsay. There's never been any proof that this building was EVER planned to be so tall. EnCana knew about the shadowing guidelines from the get-go, and if they ever planned to build so tall they would have chosen a site that would have allowed them to do so.
Height isn't everything - or maybe you think that Trump Toronto is better than something like 30 St. Mary Axe (Swiss Re) on the virtue of height alone.

I'm okay with the Bow not being 1000' although that would have been cool, and I still wish they didn't take away the two floors due to shadowing. I like the shadowing bylaw for the most part, but I'm greedy, and for the Bow to be over 800' would have been nice.

White box? oh yes...never said it was anything great? can't stand it actually, even when they re clad it, its boring typical 70's tower.
Why is this always a T.O thing? I lived in Calgary for 12 years...loved it 90% of the time, very pleased to see the skyline growing.
LOVE the BOW too.

Yesterday, I was downtown, and took a good look at the Bow, walking around it and checking it out in person from all angles. It's the first time I've gotten a good look at it up close for about 6 months. All I can say is; this tower is awesome! It's much better than I thought. :worship:

Nope. The lobby and the mezzanine level have retail areas and are open to the public, and that's it for public areas in the tower.
When the south block gets built, that will have a bunch more public area, but it's only 7 stories tall.
There's a public observation deck 3 blocks away, in the Calgary Tower:

Too bad when you are in the observation deck in the tower you look UP at all the tall buildings around. lol

That's because, of when it was built in, I think the early 1960's, nothing was as tall, and of course that has been outlived.

There was that one drawing early on that had "future residential" where the Salvation Army Warehouse is now.
I can see it happening sometime down the road.

It was built in '67 and was by far the tallest building. I just find it funny that we never had any height restrictions to protect the tower and it's views.

That would be a great location for residential, especially with the EV redevelopment.
