It was built in '67 and was by far the tallest building. I just find it funny that we never had any height restrictions to protect the tower and it's views.

I think it is kind of cool, to look up at taller skyscrapers, while looking down at the shorter ones, that were once the tallest buildings in town, all at the same time.

I think it is kind of cool, to look up at taller skyscrapers, while looking down at the shorter ones, that were once the tallest buildings in town, all at the same time.

I mentioned in another thread that Calgary needs to ramp up the Calgary Tower another 400 feet or so in order that people can see all the buildings and see over them to the prairies, suburbs, rockies, etc. I'm sure it would help tourism too. Plus, it would just be cool to have a 1000+foot tower in western Canada.

Maybe he's interested in getting a price, so that he will know how much he needs to save to buy the Bow - just like I would like to do. If I could do that - there would be an area for public access on a higher floor - for a place to relax and enjoy the view, and I think a heliport on the roof would really ice the cake.

Suncor Energy Centre on the left (formerly the PetroCanada Centre) which is presently Calgary's tallest at 215 m is going to be looking up to the Bow this summer, but there won't be a huge difference in their heights - 15 metres maybe?
The old building directly below and in front of the Bow is the grand looking (from the front side) historic Calgary Public Building which was integrated into the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts at the Jack Singer Concert Hall end of the block.
The Public building is used as municipal offices and features Calgary's last manual elevator with a living breathing elevator operator.

Hehe...There's always the '95 flood of the nearby Guadalupe River, which prevented anyone from getting into the Shark Tank--the only rainout in NHL history! The "river" is usually a trickle better known for it's year-round homeless encampments. Also, I'm actually powerless at controlling the rain.:jester: It would seem though, that just getting into the playoffs, results in The Sharks getting friendly towards any team.

I see what you mean, they do appear to be slanted. Maybe they are adding "Bow Falls" to the design!

Bigtime
Mar 21, 2010, 5:20 PM
I just took a look at those floors through the binoculars. It appears to be a visual illusion caused by some angled horizontal beams in front of the floor plate in the centre section, they are level.

I guess from my vantage point some of the horizontal beams appear to slant down due to their angle on the structure.

leftopolis
Mar 22, 2010, 12:49 AM
I'm trying to imagine the final hight, based on Bigtime's second pic: If the current floor count is 42 (the formerly slanted middle section), then I'd guess the final hight will be roughly where the top of the (right-side) crane is!

I've literally measured out the distance with a meter wheel (21m) and compared them to things...

-it's 3m more than the difference between Banker's & Suncor
-it's exactly the length of my 4 bay truck shop
-it's roughly the average length of a powerpole and a half ;)

... in other words it will be noticable, especially from the east.

Eighth Avenue Place on the left and the Bow on the right are the 2 most noticeable of the multi-billions of dollars CDN of construction projects going on. For example, the new south hospital is costing an astonishing $1.6 billion to build.
The Bow is costing well over a billion dollars to construct.

Am I blind? I'm not seeing that. Also, if the triangular diagrid sections cover multiples of 6 floors, that's up to 36 currently...and I see 6 floors more (in the middle section). I'm still seeing it at 42--not that it really matters.

They do seem to be quickening the pace of the 3 floor sections--maybe just due to it being routine at this point. Either way, the topping-out should happen this summer. I'm so enjoying watching The Bow grow, and with all the regular pics I feel like I'm in Calgary on an almost daily basis! The initial excitement of the hole in thre ground seems so long ago, and now the final product seems so near.

We are for sure now, I don't think it was yesterday at the time of that discussion.

Well, I'm not there to see it, so I'll take your word for it. It would be a break in routine though, since throughout construction they've been getting close to completing the current 3 floor section, before starting up again in the middle.

I've been counting by the triangular portions of diagrid--which are in multiples of 6 floors. They're @ 36 with that, so next would be 42, then 48 and 54. That leaves a 4 floor section to get to 58, but since 2 of them will be double floors, it actually leaves room for a final 6 floor section at the top.

This is at least on the north west section which is the only section I get a daily view of across the Telus parking lot. I see the north-east section less, but it and the spine seem to have stopped as well.

I think you are right, it just needs to surpass the Bankers Hall twins, Eighth Avenue Place's core (under construction and higher than Bankers) and finally Suncor to take her rightful spot as the tallest in the city.

I think the stairwell helps distract from the true bulkiness of the tower, so it won't look so bulky. Also, I think well all is done, the lit up stairwell will be one of the buildings most striking (for the good) features.

From the Calgary Construction thread. A futuristic rendering from CtrlAltDel

So here is something quick I came up with. Should be just above the tallest crane:

Great work C-A-D!

The Bow will look great from that angle. Lots of good early morning photo ops.

It was pretty amazing to finally see it in person. I love the building even more now that I have a better sense of its scale.

Nice pics. That concave shape on the south side will create a really interesting space below in the plaza. Even more so when the south block is built.

Looks like it's at around 38 floors (well, that many levels built across the breadth of the building) and still have 20 to go...wow...nice!
