The more I see pictures of the Bow, the more I realize that this building is truly a signature tower. We are so lucky to gert something like this, I count my blessings every time I see it.

A couple of shots from the Bow
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/8530/bow22.jpg http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/9462/bow32.jpg
They did a story about this image on the CBC Calgary Homestretch yesterdy. The Host received these photos via email from a friend. Because of the obvious parallels to the famous Ebbets NYC photos he wanted to get the goods on the motivation for the shots.
He called Matthew's Southwest who promptly said that they did not wish to comment nor did they want any of their employees or subs discussing any photos taken on site. Following that CBC called the steel worker contractor and recieved a similar response. Seems that the photo was a big No No!

It sounds like they are with the times. Liability issues involving projects like this are huge. Sounds like whoever took those pictures didn't have permission.

Sep 29, 2010, 11:08 PM
Fair point about liability in this case. I have heard Matthews had workers reprimanded for taking simple photos together, out of harms way, on the inside. Hopefully these guys won't have the hammer come down on them.

they have rules and if you work for them the rules should most certainly be followed. I am sure there is logic behind the rules and standards that they have set.
During the big pour I saw workers taking pictures of each other and of the job site. The photo in question has been circulating (via email) within Encana and I saw nothing to suggest the actions of the workers and photographer was frowned upon, quite the opposite actually.
It's more likely that they didn't want to speak publicly about it as the whole scene could be deemed unsafe or irresponsible by the general public. And it would look especially bad if an accident were to happen down the road.

I am wondering what your thoughts are on the night lighting of the Bow. I recognize that LED lighting may come to be a product that dates buidlings in a city but here are my thoughts with LED and the Bow. Architectually, one of the stunning features of the Bow is the Diagrid. I have noticed at night already that the diagrid is lost as a result of the contrast of lighting.
So, although I know this is a done deal, i think that it would have been AMAZING to have LED strips running along the diagrid similar to the Bank of China tower in Hong Kong.

they will most likely have some kind of lighting that we haven't heard of here. they may just keep the final product a secret. they have hired a famous artist. who knows, maybe he will do some kind of art using light. i would love to see a giant hologram in front of the Bow. that would be original. something that hasn't been done before, not even in china. that would be amazing. the atrium would be perfect to have some sort of holographic display, wouldn't it?

^ They are clouds. I love this building and wanted to showcase the reflectivity of the glass. On a partly cloudy day with the sun shining on the building, clouds reflect as white and gray; shadows are black and the sky is blue.
This (below) is what the effect looks like. I also wanted direct sunlight to create a more beautiful glowing illustration.

I know some won't like the colors and brick they used, but aside from that, I was quite impressed by how this has changed the look and feel of Inglewood. Personally I'm liking it.

this photo is amazing! makes me wish i didnt move to vancouver! just a sea of midrise nonsense here. too many hippies also.
Hippies. You're certainly right about that. It's one thing about Vancouver (among many others) that I could certainly do without.

Calgary and the Denver skyline are often compared to be quite similar to one another (especially the Suncor Energy Centre and our Wells Fargo-cash register building), but this building definitely sets a distinguishing factor to the city and I'm quite jealous. It does remind me of our curved tower, 1999 Broadway, but built 25 years later. I find myself wanting to visit Canada more and more every day.
Looks like its a great building in the works.

I never noticed that comparison before but totally see it. The Suncor tower looks so much like the cash register from this angle. And the materials of course are very similar shade of color.
If you come up to Canada to visit, be sure to hit Calgary!

I always thought of Calgary's SEC matching Denver's Quest Tower, and Calgary's Bankers Hall matching Denver's Cash Register.
Whatever the case there are definitely similarities between the cities and paralells in the skylines.

Hah! Mike Bullard once said "The Calgary tower is tiny! Last time I stayed in Calgary I was looking down on the tower from my hotel room!"
Not true yet, but maybe one day!

Now they need to tear down that nastiness to the lower left and build something better. The Bow is wonderful, but highlighting how sub par many of the other buildings are.

I assume you are referring to the Telus building to the left? I'd rather keep all our buildings, it really shows how the city is evolving architecturally.
Just like how the Calgary Tower is no longer our tallest structure, it tells a tale of our past and how we have evolved since then.

Or he's referring to the car rental place and Japanese restaurant beside Telus and combine it with the surface lot for another tower...
But rereading ... probably he's referring to Telus... I'd tear down the Telus sign and leave the building personally :D

This building is just too awesome, I love it! I got my wife's friend to drive my wife and I around it after we were downtown for dinner at the end of August and they thought I was weird for being in awe of it lol. She works downtown and is totally "meh" towards it, so sad :haha:. Anyway, I'm so jealous, especially with the only downtown development going on in Saskatoon at the moment being this ugly betty:

Here we are comparing Calgary to Denver... a city of more than twice the population. Having never been there I cannot comment too much, but just looking at satellite images from google earth, our downtown core seems far larger and denser. In fact, which other North American city of just 1 million people has a downtown density that we do? What's incredible is how much room there still is for growth. If Calgary were as big as Toronto, (ie 5 times bigger) downtown would be the size of Manhattan!
In other words...the future looks bright!

Yeah, you can't compare Calgary's downtown to Denver. I've been there many times for work, right in the middle of downtown every time. Besides the mountain comparisons there's not too much similar. Denver's downtown seems quiet always, there's no traffic, parking is $12/day maximum in most lots, there's very few buildings compared to Calgary. Then you get on the freeways outside of downtown and it's a parking lot. I really do like Denver though, I wish our Stephen Ave Mall was similar to Denver's 16th Street Mall. It's absolutely amazing and full of vibrancy.

It's funny that the Denver / Calgary comparisons come up. Encana's US Division is based in Denver. They have space in both Qwest and Republic Plaza.
