View Full Version : Banks that are active in your city

Partially, this is a question for advice, but its an interesting topic in and of itself.

Which banks are active in your community? i.e. aside from just having branches/atms everywhere, who sponsors local events, who finances civic projects, etc.?

The advice comes in because I'm hoping to pick a new bank for my money in Chicago (after an awful few years with Washington Mutual), and I'd like to go with a bank that is a part of the community (but also has some convenience in terms of branches/atms). In recent years, the obvious choice for Chicago was LaSalle (who sponsored the marathon, a theatre renovation, etc.), but they are about to be absorbed into Charlotte's BankofAmerica conglommerate (they've been owned by Dutch giant ABN AMRO for some time but have been allowed to operate basically independently). What other major banks are an active part of the community (not only Chicago, but also for your city)?

WaMu is the big dog here -- many times over the largest locally HQ'd bank. Also Bank of America, Key Bank, etc., are active here.

Civic philanthropy here doesn't revolve around banks or corporations. Generally the donations in the tens of millions are from individuals/couples -- Gates, Allen, McCaw, the Shirley, Brotman, etc. On that tangent, it's remarkable how routine $20,000,000+ donations are these days.

For example, the Seattle Art Museum completed two major projects this year -- the Olympic Sculpture Park in Belltown and a doubling of its main museum Downtown (attached to the new WaMu HQ) -- and not only did SAM raise $179,000,000 for the projects, but they also received art donations worth one billion dollars basically all at once -- from the Brotmans, Mr. Ebsworth, the Shirleys...not Gates though, even though Mimi Gates, Bill's MIL, is SAM's Executive Director.

I bank with Chase and I'm very satisfied with it. I stuck it out through the Bank One merger and even though it's no longer a Chicago hq'ed bank, I couldn't be happier. You may want to consider Charter One, 5th/3rd, Corrus (mostly on the North Side), and US Bank. All seem to be expanding their presence in Chicago. Harris might also be a good choice but there's rumors of branch shut downs.

Well, I live in the Charlotte metro area, so obviously BOA and Wachovia do it up big here.

Some others would be Carolina First Bank, First Citizens Bank (SC), National Bank of South Carolina, and South Carolina Bank and Trust.

Once the easy answer for San Francisco would have been Bank of America. No longer--they walked out on us for a southern belle. Now it's Wells Fargo and a host of little niche players like United Commercial Bank which targets, serves and supports mainly the Asian community.

BofA still probably has more ATM's than anybody--they still have a lot of the local business but they just don't provide community support the way they did when they were headquartered here.

By the way--I opened an account with BofA 26 years ago and still use them because they operate, have branches and ATMs all over the country including the main places I travel: SF, Tucson and Central Florida (where my family all live).

National City Bank, KeyBank, and Amtrust (formerly Ohio Savings) are all based in Cleveland. Third Federal Savings and Loan is also locally based.

Others with a retail presence:
5/3 (Fifth-Third)
Charter One (aka Citizens, formerly HQ'd in Cleveland, now owned by Royal Bank of Scotland)
Chase
Huntington
USBank
FirstMerit (based in Akron)

The only Bank of America presence I've seen is an ATM at the airport. I'm sure that won't be that way for long.

Thanks. I've been considering Chase, they seem to be biggest in the area and have great branch/ATM coverage. How active are they in the community in terms of sponsoring events/festivals/projects/etc.? Have they kept up involvement swallowing BankOne?

The community involvement is definitely not the same as it was with Bank One. In fact the last term I heard Chase sponsor anything was the Bears, and that can hardly be considered community involvement. They do employ a ton of people in Chicago though. Probably as much as any other bank here.

The online banking is great and in my opinion, it's the number one reason to go with Chase. There are branches everywhere. And I don't just mean giant drive-thru branches that swallow up an entire city block. Many are actually well integrated. ATM coverage isn't as important these days due to the whole cash-back phenomenon but they do have ATMs in all the Walgreenses.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

For Minneapolis/St. Paul:

USBank (USBancorp is HQ'd here)
Wells Fargo - big presence, since Norwest was here
TCF (TCF is HQ'd here...Twin Cities Federal)
M&I - Marshall & Illsley
Bank of the Lakes
Bank of the West
Highland Bank
Associated Bank
Bremer Bank
Beacon Bank
Stearns Bank

I would say the first three are the big players in the Twin Cities...of course the Chase, ABN Amro, Citi, etc. have an office here, but not for local, personal banking really...

Umpqua Bank "America's next big bank in a boutique setting" is active here in Portland. They have their name attached to most major community events.

The national chains are also pretty involved. US Bank used to be an Oregon company so they are probably the most noticed national chain here.

I have been with First American for about 8 years now, and I am very happy with them. They don't really sponser any large civic events because its still a rather small bank that is growing pretty fast. They have effectivley blanketed the entire north side up to Uptown with ATMs. I use the bank branch at 33 W. Monroe, and even though this is a downtown branch, the tellers greet me by name. The only downside is the fact the HQ is located in the shithole known as Elk Grove Village.

Here is a listing of ATM locations: http://www.firstambank.com/fileadmin/user_upload/PDF/ATM_list_as_of_01-02-07_web_by_city.pdf

I have a nominal account left at LaSalle Bank, they are ok but I have switched over to Chase for all intents and purposes, they got my business because they offered $100 to open a checking account. They have better ATM coverage then LaSalle and in terms of downtown ATM's they seem to have the most. I also like the fact that Chase's main branch is in the tallest bank building in Chicago, the Chase Tower (formerly First National, BankOne):) .

we have like four banks in canada, and i wouldn't be surprised if most people just think of them as part of the government, like the cbc.

we are not always the most dynamic people in the world.

Philadelphia hasn't had a major bank HQ'd here since CoreStates got eaten up by one of the Charlotte behemouths....

These are the biggest ones....there are a ton of small banks all over the region...

Wachovia (the former CoreStates and whose name is on both indoor arenas)
PNCBank
Citizens Bank (name on Phillies Ballpark)
Sovereign Bank (technically HQ'd in Philly...but really a Reading bank and the official bank of the Philadelphia Eagles!)
Bank of America
Commerce Bank (HQ'd in South Jersey)

Yepp, Sweden is pretty centralised when it comes to banks. And me being in Stockholm it's basically just the nation-wide banks, so no Skånes Provinsbank - but I know where Danske Bank have an office :) Stockholm is also home to Skandiabanken's only office, it's a fairly large bank but almost completely net-based.
