Why not? Mobile metro ( plus only 45miles away is Biloxi ,MS ) is going to be off the charts in the next few years! I just wish Donald Trump will look at puting a Highrise( Hotel/condo/retail) in downtown Mobile. Mobile will get its second cruise ship by the first of the year, its close to the Mississippi Coast (casinos) and the beaches. He could put a small highrise(40to50stories) where the eyesore Mobile civic center now sits. Included with the highrise a new convention center/arena(15,000) with retail shops where the people from the cruises can spend some of there money.
Mr. Trump last i heard is puting his money hour and ahalf away in Nawlins. The Big Easy is one of my favorite cities(Geaux Saints!) and I spend alot of time and money there, but there something big happening over here in Mobile, which I think the city will jump out of the long time shadow of New Orleans and be the Capital of the state called the Gulf Coast
I Heard the man's middle name is money. So whereya at Mr Trump? Looks like a great investment to me!

Though I'd love to see Trump invest in cities like Mobile or Birmingham, I don't see it happening any time soon. Personally, I think he could do quite well with something in a city like Mobile. BUT, he usually is looking for a headline grabber in a big-time market.

Mobile should be excited. But this is just wild speculation and wishcasting. And even though the new steel plant isn't going to be in Mobile proper, it's still going to be FAR more important to Mobile's future economic growth than a Trump tower would be anyway.
But I did have one question for any of the Mobile residents on here since you mentioned it. Is it finally definite that Mobile is getting another cruise ship? It seems inevitable I just wish it would happen sooner rather than later. Which cruise line and what ship?

I hope you are talking about Jr. b/c that would be the only chance. And that would be 2 decades away for a naming rights joint venture, or 3 decades away for a self venture, that at least as things currently stand.
Plus, Mobile is not currently growing up to be a yuppie, extreme wealth, or corporate home type of place; it is developing into a middle class paradise with abundant upward mobility, extreme affordability, mixed in with tourism/retirement.
Do 60-70k per year industrial jobs improve your chances of Trump? No
Do 60-70k per year industrial jobs currently provide the best path to prosperity for non-harvard educated Alabamians, who only want hard work and good pay? Yes
Though the employment that is moving into Mobile is not really any lower paying than many of those bank jobs in Charlotte, they are of a different nature and draw a different type of person to the area.
Though if Mobile ever got a new airport, someone like (not necessarily) Trump building a large resort such as a combo of the Grand and Bellingrath along the bay somewhere.

If the RSA is willing to put up enough $$$, then I don't see it as that farfetched that a big name (Trump or otherwise) would be willing to put a name on a project.
The question is whether the RSA has anything else big in store for Mobile ?
BamaGrad04

I'd assume that RSA is going to take a breather on Mobile for a bit...At least until they are able to determine what kind of return they'll get for all their recent investments. Of course the cruise terminal is doing as well as possible, with it being full to capacity for every cruise, but it may take a while to see Riverview/RSA Tower perform.

Back in the early 90's I remember him coming here . He was looking at the waterfront becoming a casino resort. This was the time the so called "string of pearls" was visioned and that year of 1992 was when the first casino in Biloxi was built. He wanted Mobile to share the wealth. I hope he comes back ! I would like to see David Bonner(RSA HEADMAN) buy the convention center to make it a cruise ship terminal. As it is now Mobile would have to expand the current one to make room for a larger or second ship.
A Highrise (40to 50stories) condo/hotel/retail/would look good Downtown where the civic center stands. Maybe this is the reason why current mayor Jones wants a park not a highrise condo where the old county courthouse used to be . The waterstreet landing condo developer ,Oliver his last name, rumor said he also wants to invest more in downtown. If the new RSA tower goes well he wants a highrise office tower too.
I know that old saying ," Yeah and If your aunt had n-ts she 'd be your uncle too!" To many out there ,seem to think that Mobile might seem a little to big for its britches. But if you don t pursue a vision or a goal all this momentum of development might be gone like cheap gas prices!

I live in the Charlotte metro area, and I agree--it's still a bit hard to believe.
I don't see him considering Mobile anytime in the near future, not before other cities that have been on an economic roll for some time before Mobile and have had the growth to show for it (e.g., Raleigh, Nashville, Austin, etc.).
Don't get ahead of yourselves.

Of the 'up and comers' I think Charlotte and Austin make the most sense. But N.O. aside, has Trump really been that interested in smaller markets (<2 million)?

I think Donald Trump would develop in Gulf Shores before he would in Mobile.
There was a rumor before Katrina (maybe even before Ivan) that Trump briefly considered a site along west beach in Gulf Shores. The beach condo market everywhere has gone to crap since, though.
If I recall correctly, a developer from Pensacola was originally involved with Trump's New Orleans project & was the rumored partner for the above.
At one point, Trump was also linked to a planned casino in Diamondhead, MS.
I don't see him considering Mobile anytime in the near future, not before other cities that have been on an economic roll for some time before Mobile and have had the growth to show for it (e.g., Raleigh, Nashville, Austin, etc.).

I don't expect it soon, either.
IMO, the only thing that could potentially "make it happen" at some point is the RSA, which has considerable national media holdings, which it uses very effectively to market its golf courses, upscale hotels, and other real estate. Mobile appears to be RSA's city of choice in the state, and Dr. Bronner (RSA emperor) supposedly has a good relationship with Trump.

It could happen one day, but not anytime soon. Mobile needs time to prove that the investments it has already got will work. To tell you the truth, I don't want Mobile to be exactly like New Orleans, I like it's quaintness.
BTW, I will be in Mobile Tomorrow. I should have some pics, and a little bit of film.

It is true that trump was looking to build a tower in Mobile in the 90s. But he wanted the city to pretty much pay for it and then give it to him. Mobile declined. and that is when we started courting RSA.

But it's becoming less of a deal now. For instance, just out of the blue a 40-story condo tower that will consist of 99 condos priced from $1.5 million to $10 million was announced a few weeks ago. BOA announced a 32-story tower as an afterthought to the Ritz Carlton project. So I guess it isn't so much that it's still a big deal, but that they just seem to come easier these days.

and ........Yeah , and Grizzly Adams had a beard!Over all a 500 ft. building would still be considered at least a midsized project, even in NYC or Chicago. Besides, you were talking about Mobile. And a building of that height would still be in the top 15 or 20 in Toronto depending on whether it would be a hotel or office, and in the top 5 or 6 in New Orleans, so it would be a large project/larger project for those two cities. And again, you were talking about Mobile. While the crown and spire gives the RSA Tower some extra height, it is actually a 35 storie building. So floor space/usage wise, you are suggesting for the city to build a larger building than The RSA Tower, and you call that a small project ?

Economic trends don't attract Trump, as New Orleans is a prime example. Trump builds in cities that his clientel requests he build in... cities that attract people with more money than anyone here... who just want to get away for a weekend. It needs to be a destination city. That's pretty much it in a nutshell.
Now, cities like Charlotte and Atlanta may be able to buck that trend. They may have a strong enough economy and a large enough elite class to be able to serve local residences only. I don't know, but I'd guess that Trump would see it as a risk even in those cities. It's easier to sell units to the world rather than a local market, and I'd suspect that figures into his thinking.

Well, one thing that Mobile has going for it is that it's on the coast. Coastal cities can often attract projects that other cities wouldn't be able to. I'm not specifically talking about Trump here, just that large condo projects are pretty common along the coast and it wouldn't be a surprise for me to see condo towers in Mobile's future.
As for the Charlotte Trump project, there's been no formal announcement. When the renderings have been finalized there will be an announcement. Signs are currently pointing to a 70 and 40 story tower as project components.
I haven't been to Mobile in years, does Mobile have a coastal stretch of hotel/condo towers?

Yeah, Rockhill. Mobile is not on the coast, though alot of people widely sort of assume that. Mobile sits on a bay (Mobile Bay), which is actually quite large. Lots of large hotels, condos, etc. are on Alabama's coastline, but not on the bay (at least not yet). Mobile folks can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Mobile's about 20-30 miles up the bay from the coastline.

I would say that Mobile is on the coast. Just not the beach. And most of Mobile's waterfront is a working water front. The bay doesn't have that beach feel, but it is on its way in gaining condo towers. there are several proposed in around fowl river and dog river and of course on the eastern shore just south of fairhope and spanish fort in the delta. But yeah downtown Mobile is located about 20 something miles up the bay with the southern part of the city closer to the gulf.

I would still say that Mobile is coastal. It has a coastal culture and gets the coastal thunderstorms that roll of the bay every afternoon at 3 o'clock. Mobile isn't land locked or anything. Ask any insurance adjuster and they would say that we are! But anyways I see what you guys are saying. I always thought the bay was an inlet of the gulf.

One could probably say that in an indirect sense, economic trends attract Trump. For instance, there was an article in the Charlotte Observer a few weeks ago where the Trump kids were interviewed. They said that what put Charlotte on the radar for them was that they knew a lot of people that were moving there. And of course, the primary reason why people are moving to Charlotte is because it has a strong economy. Even New Orleans sort of fits the bill here when you considering post-Katrina (re)construction. I don't know of any cities where Trump is building that has a sluggish or less-than-stellar economy (unless one is in the works for Detroit that we don't know about).

I don't like most of the towers in New Orleans. Most are kind of boring. I think this will be great for their skyline.
I think New Orleans has one of the best skylines in the country. I prefer it to Atlanta's, Miami's, or any other sunbelt city. The density and diversity of the mid and high rises there lets you know that the city grew in the pre-car era, which I really like. Almost all of the building on Poydras are new, so I think this tower will blend in well to that area. As far as Trump in Mobile, I don't see it happening. As amazed and pleased as I am with everything going on here now, I imagine most people outside of the area aren't too impressed. The things we freak out about (the RSA tower, for example) happen all of the time in larger cities.

Come on Bayou...that "old Mobile" mentality left town twenty years ago. Did it exist...absolutely, but this thinking is all but dead. There is only one vocal one left and she didn't do so well in the last mayoral election. Those who live in Springhill are now yuppies and professionals; they aren't fools...who you gonna' sue or sew up if there is no population growth. I know that is a bit anal but it is obvious to them. Those who live in Springhill are now yuppies and professionals; they aren't fools...who you gonna' sue or sew up if there is no population growth. I know that is a bit anal but it is obvious to them. I have family off Old Shell and they have a house on Dauphin Island ( East End with the smart people). Me, I own a real business and I know of NO ONE who is opposed to the growth. Mobile is going to the next higher level....and I'm pushing her all I can to get there.
While I generally agree, there will be backlash against change when Mobile steps it up to the next level. The unprecendented growth in intown Atl is being backlashed against in neighorhoods that are very similar to Springhill.
What extreme active growth does is it brings out two extreme types of people: 1)those who only see the change as destruction 2)those who only see the change as creation.
I think most of the old money families have inbred enough that the kids they are putting out nowdays don't have the mental capacity to run a business, get overly involved with politics, etc... Having graduated high school from UMS, I know a lot of them...
What's the current status of Trump in New Orleans? The website is vague and I can't find a discussion of it on this forum.
Construction on Trump New Orleans is expected to start in June or July this summer. It was officially approved by the New Orleans City Council in mid-March.

Pkp...I think to a large degree you are absolutely right. Between the debutante balls and the house parties with Mommy providing the liquor there just isn't time on the social calendar for Mobile's elite children to either work or see life beyond the next party. However, I do know a notable exception in the form of my nephew...he has the mind and drive to take his family business to the next level. Oh yea, he is a St. Paul's grad...You both got a first class education!

I think you are taking this private school stuff too far. The majority of the graduates of St. Paul's are driven, gifted students and do not act as spoiled "elites." You must not fail to investigate the stereotypes as I feel I am not an example of "not see(ing) life beyond the next party," and I am a graduate of St. Paul's. Yes there are some (keyword some) exceptions to this, but the vast majority of matriculating students at SPS are not examples of your overactive stereotypes. By the way, I take pride in my work and what I have done for myself...

SouthSky...you have a point but the comment is on old money families who have inbred NOT with private schools. "Elite" is not the same as "fortunate".
I am well aware of who goes to St. Paul's and where they come from. Most students there are good kids from good families; no doubt you are one of them. I apologize for my poor choice of words. I hope you will move back home as we will need a new generation of leaders for this growth coming our way. You are WAY, WAY ahead of the curve in my book just because you have an interest in this forum. Come home soon!

South...I hope you choose to live in Mobile when you graduate. I gather you are in school at LSU. You probably went to school with my nephew if you are college age; he is at Alabama. He is coming back to work with his Dad in their business.

Even Dauphin Isle is about to open 7 storie condos right of the public beach. I don't care for it, but it is happening. Also I don't see how growth is going to hurt Springhill, and I don't think anyone has even gave that situation any thought at all. I just don't understand where he is coming up with all of this. Maybe I'm missing something:shrug: Besides, how does he equate me with old Mobile money:shrug: , I will be a first time Mobilian transplanted from north Alabama that is a transplant from Detroit. I'm also poor, AND all for growth in Mobile. So not only did he peg me just the opposite of what kind of person I am ? but somehow equated my opinion on whether Mobile is ready for such a project to being antigrowth. I'm confused on where he comes up with all of this:shrug:

The way it looks the much needed condos/retail shops on water street won't happen. Alabama or Auburn has a better chance of being national champs in football.:haha:
What not a better business man than Trump to buy this property from Oliver and put up a 30-40 story condo with retail and a water park.
I bet former mayor Mike Dow has Trump's number on speed dial.

Please call trump!
It makes me sick when you read things in this article like the owners of the CSX property might just "sit on it". They can't get off the pot and we're stuck with an eyesore and a barrier between downtown and the river.

Man , it would have been another boom for downtown.
Now what?:help:

Why don't they reserve the condo ideas for the courthouse property, do "something" with Water Street, and create a relatively-low rise riverside shopping district/area/building (whatever you want to call it) with that Water St. Landing site? Maybe a Riverside market? I feel that is an idea that should be push instead of a monstrous condo directly on the water.

I agree - like the Riverwalk in NOLA, but smaller and more upscale. That would make it a very publically accesible place along with the park and maritime museum.

The raised walkway from the convention center to the riverview?
Why can t they make it public. There is ure bridge over water street for easy access!

It is public - just terribly difficult to find and use if you are not parking in that garage. There has been on on proposed bridge that would go from the foot of Church St (by the city museum), across Water St, and into the park. This is the best place/option and i think it should be on on priority. It should be very wide and use ramps i/o stairs to accomodate foot and bike traffic. Gotta do something with that old csx site, though.

What leads you to believe that Mobile is Bronner's favorite? :D
Well I tell you that he's given Huntsville no love. Come on Bronner, we're the future of Alabama just like Mobile. You've given plenty to the 'Gump too and the 'Ham gets more from you then they admit to.
