I took these on a beautiful warm evening a few night ago.

Calgary as seen from Park Hill, a cool little neighborhood south of downtown

Typical houses of Park hill itself, deserving of their own thread.

Great shots once again. This is a very interesting angle of downtown. It really shows off its length from east to west. Nice amount of density south of downtown in mission and the Beltline.

Beautiful shots. That first pano is great and that last shot of the houses captures some of the character of Calgary neighbourhoods. I intend to take some shots of Calgary neighbourhoods in the near future.

Park Hill has the coolest contemporary homes- love 1A St- I have to check it out, it's been at least a year.

Thanks Surreal!

great shots! was this taken from the russian cemetary or that lookout point a bit further south?

this is by far my favourite spot from which to view the skyline. it has a nice layered effect.

Awesome shots. I love all the greenery in the foreground. We always hear about how treeless Calgary is, but it looks like a rain forest in these photos

It isn't treeless, in fact it's loaded with trees, the only problem is that the climate only allows them to flourish for barely half the year (if you count the fall)

it also supports only a limited variety of deciduous trees, which is why you see almost nothing but poplars.

still, the geography of calgary is nothing if not interesting. while virtually every tree you see in these photos was planted by someone---the hills would be totally bare otherwise---there are clusters of natural forest all around the city. there's even an old growth douglas fir forest along the bow river that is pretty outstanding.

There are a large amount of poplars in Calgary, but surprisingly more and more varieties of deciduous trees are springing up here. 60 years ago it was thought that only elms and poplars, and one or two other types were the only trees that would grow here, but the variety keeps increasing. Much of the reasons for lack of variety was because it is so dry here, as well as the Chinooks being hard on many types. If watered regulary, many types will do okay.

It's amazing that every tree was hand planted, gotta give Calgarians alot of credit for all that work.

Indeed, look at archive photos of Mt Royal (when it was still called American Hill)- looks as bare as a new suburb, and as anybody who's ever been there knows, Mt Royal is an incredibly verdant part of the inner city.

part of the reason that more trees are growing in calgary is that the local climate is changing. it's certainly a lot wetter and warmer than it was even a few decades ago.
