i have 466 photos of my neighbourhood here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/christopherdewolf/sets/72157600010517114/) on flickr.
i live right by the border of mile end and outremont in montreal. i consider my neighbourhood to be the handful of blocks surrounding park avenue.

^I'm in Vieux Hull, right close to downtown.
My hood is a working-class but rapidly gentrifying area east of downtown Montreal, near the Gay Village and the St-Lawrence River.

@WHISTLERINMUSKOKA: SCALE YOUR FRICKEN PICTURES!
I live in the "Simpson Street BIA (Business Improvement Area)", this street has the worst reputation in town. I happen to live on the most safe part of the street. My apartment is the point at which hookers stop. :) That is, you won't find them north of here. We average one beating with hearing distance of our apartment every 2 days.
These first two pictures aren't mine; The first I found on some website that shows where pictures were taken in Google Maps, the second is from a blog I think.
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/4291/436828vh1.jpg
This is in front of the building next door, looking north. The brick building is the old Chapples Warehouse, it's now a discount/refurbished furniture store and storage space. Before you go thinking it'd be great for lofts - it only has windows on two sides. :) That lot has been vacant since the 70s, and will probably be vacant for a long time.
http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/639/ottawatbayapr04019vihk6.jpg
The street running from the bottom right to the upper centre is Simpson Street, the buildings in the upper right is downtown Fort William.
These next pics are mine.
http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/6212/adanachotelol5.jpg
The Adanac Hotel; It's now apartments, one of which has a pride flag in the window. :P This is the lowest of low income housing in this city, rents in the place are in the low 300s per month, but you get what you pay for. It's one o the buildings that makes you feel uneasy when you're near it.
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/6682/aitkensbuildingij2.jpg
The Aitkens Building, pretty much across the street from me, was bought and fixed up a few months ago by a friend of my aunts. It's a kitchen/bathroom renovation store now. It looks pretty good. This pic is from summer of 2005.
http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/4033/chappelswarehousell0.jpg
Another view of the Chapples warehouse.
http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/6134/hotelszx7.jpg
The Hotel Royal. People are frequently found wandering nude it's halls in an inebriated stupor. Like the Adanac, it's a building you would rather stay away from.
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/4015/legioncourtuq3.jpg
Way down at the butt end of the street is a quieter residential area. This is The Legion, a small apartment building mainly for seniors. At 5 (6 if you count that... thing on the south wing) storeys, it's the tallest building on the street. It's actually on a cul de sac, but I took this picture on Simpson. There is just grass between the two.
http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/2199/norwesthealthcentreew1.jpg
The Northwest District Health Unit, the newest building on the street. It was built in the late 90s. They have a new addition across the street, which covered up a mural. I have no idea why they did that, when they could have built the addition in their parking lot and used the mural as a backdrop to the parking lot. It's stupid decisions like that that make this neighbourhood what it is today.
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/8357/simpsonlookingnorthsx8.jpg
This is at the intersection of Simpson and Victoria, looking north.
http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/1718/simpsonstreetstorefrontic0.jpg
Storefronts and apartments, a couple offices; Those two guys co-own a used things store. They're pretty friendly people. I'm not sure if this place still exists, these pictures are a couple years old.
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/6048/ukrainiancreditunionbl6.jpg
The Ukrainian Credit Union, the finest building on the street. It's also home to a museum and art galley.
http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/2806/westhotellj6.jpg
The West Hotel. 34 fires and still standing. This is where you bring your hooker so your wife doesn't find out. :frog: It falls in the same category as the Adanac and Royal.

"So below is a Hotel and on top is a apartment?"
I think that's how it works. It's a pretty big (and slanty) building, there could be anything in there.

I don't recall posting that one..

I hate them. There is not a single goddamn house which doesn't have a garage and driveway in front. Another pet peeve: only sidewalks on 1 side of the street. But yes, at least they aren't cookie cutter, but that is only because it is an "estate type" community...
The only things the community has that are really going for it is that it is within a 20 minute walk of a CTrain station, and that it overlooks Fish Creek Provincial Park. Too bad it is also 15Km or so from downtown... and also right near the southwest edge of the city.
^^^ hey its still home.. you could paint your house pink with purple pockidots :P

that was nice area Boris...
Brampton (11 th largest city in Canada with 433k people) grew by 100k people since 2001.
my suburban street is a very diverse and has about perhaps 4 white people in all. Built in 1999 when my house was only 289k but now is 445k.House sizes range from 2200-3500 sq feet and prices from 370-450k.

Man, those pics of Brampton make me feel right at home....for better or for worse. Looks like the older part of my neighborhood...which I think was built by Mattamy, a GTA-based developer. The part of the area I live in was built by Reids, which has a more distinct Waterloo Region-Guelph design to it. Yes, distinctly bland and unimaginative. Can't say I've ever been a big fan of the sprawl going on in the extended Golden Horseshoe.

It's a shithole... but until I finally move out it is still my shithole...
Welcome to the community of Evergreen Estates. A bullcrap, auto-dependent, single-use, poorly served by public transit, in the middle of nowhere, ugly, soulless, upper-middle class suburban neighbourhood of Calgary.
Yaa, but I bet the wife swapping out there is great.

Come to think of it... there is a guy down the street who got a Russian mail-order bride... :sly:
Oh yeah, on the grow-op point. Been there, done that. I guess that means the gangs are moving in next and I can expect prostitutes to be roaming my street first thing tomorrow morning. Cause you know, we're going to be one of those dangerous innercity communities in no time... :twoguns:

lol there have been two on my street alone!!! Another guy was caught for credit card scams and another had a violent domestic dispute.
New Suburban areas are safer my foot.
My cousin lives in the far end of Scarborough and none of this stuff happens in her area. Its a nice 1970's suburbia (bungalows and dark brick)

Too bad it is also 15Km or so from downtown... and also right near the southwest edge of the city.
really? I'm surprised that's even allowed...

Haha I was going to reply with the exact same thing.
In some of Thunder Bay's post war, innercity street car suburbs, there are no sidewalks. I'm not entirely sure why but I think it was a tax issue. The city gradually installs them. I think we're one of only a handful of cities with that phenomenon.

There are actually quite a few areas in Toronto (the boroughs) with sidewalk-less streets as well. Not innercity though.
Well the area I was mentioning would be as innercity as the parts of Scarborough right by downtown. They aren't in the core but about a half mile from it.
It was probably a tax thing, or the growth was just so fast they didn't bother with them. It's especially bad along busy roads, it's not very pedestrian friendly.
