I really wanted to do a thread on just how amazing summer, and the festival season is in Edmonton and simultaneously show off the vast rivervalley and skyline.

Enjoy.

Canada’s Festival City

The people of Greater Edmonton are physically connected to each other by streets, sidewalks and bridges. We are also united culturally through our sports teams, the arts, local media and — uniquely to Edmonton — by the range, depth and variety of our festival scene.

Canada’s Festival City, Edmonton has more than 30 established festivals each year devoted to:

* Music: Edmonton’s live music festival lineup includes Edmonton’s Labatt Blues Festival, Symphony Under The Sky, Yardbird Jazz Festival and the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, which is one of North America’s leading folk festivals.
* Performances: Celebrate live theatre, dance and film, including the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival, which is the world’s second-largest fringe festival, feats Festival of Dance, the Edmonton International Film Festival, and many others.
* Visual Arts: Edmontonians with an artistic bent embrace The Works Art & Design Festival and the VisualEyez festival of performance art.
* Family fun: There is year-round entertainment for families with the International Children’s Festival, Edmonton's Capital EX summer exhibition, the Santa Claus Parade and much more.
* Sports: Lace ’em up. Compete in or watch your favourite sports event. Whether that’s the Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival or the Edmonton Dragon Boat Festival, there’s something for everyone.
* Cultural: Edmonton’s cultural diversity is on display at the multicultural Edmonton Heritage Festival, colourful Cariwest, the Canadian Finals Rodeo and at powwows that celebrate our Western Canadian roots.

Thought I would share what I think makes Edmonton a truly great city in Canada. Stolen mostly from Coldrsx work, so I thought I would quote him...

Feepa you just started a pissing contest you know. And a thread on just how amazing summer festival season is in Edmonton? What's up with the winter pics? I'm pretty sure the title of "Canada's Festival City" was dreamed up by the tourist board. I'm also sure Edmonton isn't the only city to call themselves that.

feepa
May 23, 2007, 8:58 PM
I never said it was limited to Summer festivals.

how did I start a pissing contest? I'm not the one that declared Edmonton to be Canada's festival City. All the wonderful festivals here did.
(It must be, I've yet to see you enter a thread that isn't a pissing contest)

Edit: So let's not turn this into a pissing contest. That WAS not the point of this at all.
Just as other threads show great things about other cities, I'm only trying to show great things about Edmonton...
I encourage other citzens of other cities on SSP to do the same thing (in their own thread, as not to turn this into a vs thread as well) Show things that make their cities great.

My dad used to take me to the Canadian Finals Rodeo every year when I was kid, starting back when it was in the Edmonton Gardens. Good memories.

Still, calling Edmonton "Canada's Festival City" is a little much, don't you think? Almost every city in the country has a similar line up of festivals, and I don't think you'll outdo Montreal for the festi-circuit.

feepa
May 23, 2007, 9:05 PM
Alright - you all win - I'll remove the name Canada - as I dont want to turn this into a shit flinging contest...

I think the moniker "Festival City" is entirely fitting.... The festivals in Edmonton are fantastic, and the sheer volume and quality of the events surely deserves some recognition!

I volunteer at the Folk and Blues fests.. both these events are the highlights of my summer.

/\ No kidding. Not to mention that Edmonton also has the second largest Fringe Festival in the world, the largest Folk Music Festival in North America, and one of the largest Heritage Festival in the world! Round these biggies out with the NUMEROUS smaller festivals, and you have a pretty amazing line up.

Having been to festivals across canada...i have honestly found Edmonton to have the most and largest selection.

Toronto and montreal have larger festivals like cariwest/jazz/comedy...winnipeg has some amazing ones as do halifax and calgary.

But overall i very much believe Edmonton may have the greatest rundown.

Good for E-town, I hear that the Festival city is a fitting title. Malek, if you don't like the thread, stop posting on it and leave, it's quite simple.

I like the Idea of this thread, Edmonton gets a bad reputation (with no help from us Calgary forumers) so why not have a thread to showcase one of the things that Edmonton does very well.

NO, the discussion IS about Edmonton, I am beginning to think Montrealers are the most petty people on here, no one can make a thread about their own city without all of jumping on them.

Edmonton is a great city and these festivals are something that are really going for it. As a Calgarian, I don't feel that the Chuck having good festivals is any threat to my city's rep and have no particular reason to attack them for it (maybe I'm biased, being a former Edmontonian myself). On that note, I'll be enjoying Lilac Festival this Sunday here in Calgary. :)

^ Apparently some people feel that saying something good about one city is an invitation to say that another is better.

For what it's worth, I know that Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa are all great cities when it comes to festivals and events, and it seems that Edmonton is also quite exceptional in that regard. I don't know about other cities, but it sounds like Canadian cities in general seem to do quite well in providing a diverse program of events. How's that for a diplomatic Canadian response?

Kevin_foster
May 24, 2007, 3:36 AM
The title is the title because that's the city's nickname. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmonton. Should we hand over the nickname or stop using it because Montreal wants that nickname? This is how we market ourselves. It's one of Edmonton's most positive features. Or would you prefer we use the nickname "Edmonton: Canadas shitty boring city". I think some people would like to see the latter, so that their city can look bestest!

Anyways, now that I'm done feeding the trolls, Calgary's Folk Fest is REALLY something to keep an eye on this year, they have some pretty damn good opening acts that we're not getting. For the first time ever, I'll be travelling down to watch.

Everyone take a big old valium already. Or a big fatty if that's your thing. Can we not discuss the merits of a claim to be "Canada's Festival City" without everyone crapping in their drawers? Edmonton has great festivals, I've been to many of them. Though I prefer to call it "Klondike Days" because that's when it was best. But if you're going to call yourself that on a "Canada" thread you shouldn't be surprised if someone asks you to defend that claim.
Peace guys. I really really like Edmonton. Edmonton rocks.

Sorry, read your title and new it wouldn't end up going down well. C'mon, I could easily list 3-5 festivals in Toronto for each you posted for Edmonton. All I'm saying is the Term Canada's festival city is a bit much and an obvious name given to it by city officials. And people who quote wiki are idiots! Wiki is good for a refference but it's not going to hold up in court. I could go on Wiki and edit Timmins information to say it's Canada's Festival city.

Feepa, even without me stating the obvious in one of the first replies, did you not think for a second this thread would end up this way?

Yes, this post was a little bit of boosterism. Whats wrong with that? I think its something everyone in Canada should come check out. You can even go that this post was a little off topic, but its still about urban atmosphere, which is not that far off either.

We all really don't want to know what's going on in other places? We really don't give a shit about anything not immediately in our backyard? We can't learn anything from what's going on elsewhere?

It's a nic I'll wager few outside of Edmonton has heard.

In any case, posting a list of seemingly run-of-the-mill festivals plus a few promotional photos is a pretty pathetic attempt in comparison to the festival photo threads elsewhere on the forum which allow you vicariously live the experience

This wasn't an attempt at a photo thread. But what ever, I've seem to hit the nerve of eastern Canadians. (seeing as they are the only ones who complain). I'll let the rest of you decide if hitting that nerve is a good thing, or a good thing.
The comments this thread has received certainly aren't deserved. If you dont have anything constructive or objective to add (in a positive manner) press the back button and cruise on into the next thread. I never said you had to like this thread. The less comments, the quicker this thread hits the bottom AND YOU DONT HAVE TO LOOK at it anymore. Posting on in just brings it back to the top... Carry on as you were

Can't say I've heard it, but who cares? Saskatoon calls itself (themselves?) 'Paris of the Prairies'. No idea where that comes from, but if it makes them happy, what's it hurting?? Cities come up with things like that all the time, they use it as a marketing strategy or to boost morale, to say "we've got a good thing going here". What's the big deal? Every city does it.

As for the last part of your post...again, who cares? This was meant to be a showcase of all the festivals the city has to offer, not a way for you to "vicariously live the experience". If you want to live it, go there. If not, then leave the person alone.

Some people need to grow up and/or get their heads out of their @sses - it's pretty shameful. Center of the earth attitudes don't fly well with most and I'm hopeful any respect that anyone held for certain people around here has all been wiped away.

I haven't been around for too long, so maybe some vets can help me.

What exactly is the point of the Canada section? There are only so many threads that can bitch about the federal gov't, taxes and the economy. Otherwise, almost any other topic is focussed on some particular city.

I've read a lot of "Canada is a large and diverse country" comments on here. If we can't share the great things about each other's cities, what's the point? I welcome a thread about the Toronto Film Fest, Montreal GP, Vancouver Olympics etc... why not share with the country?

The thread starter is not taking credit for the moniker. He admitted that. Why is everyone so hung up on it. Regardless of the title, I think people should get past their petty homer-ism and appreciate other parts of the country, regardless of what a thread is titled.

Let's reread the previous 10 posts. All they say is how terrible it is that someone didn't agree with the moniker. Sounds like an echo chamber of moaning and groaning here rather than you guys celebrating the real and wonderful events that Edmonton hosts every year.
