I made this panorama of the Halifax skyline but I used some trial software so there are watermarks. I'll have to go back sometime on a nice day and make a proper one.

No doubt about it, Vancouver is developing one of the best skylines around.
I so love the shaw tower, and with Shangri-la it will have a balance between tall buildings and natural beauty.
If i wanted to show a an outsider what a Canadain city looks like, I would give them Vancouver as the example.
No wonder Vancouver is doing all the commericials for Canada outside the country, I just saw it in a Pacific Life commercial and an ING commerical , and a Nissan commercial too I think?

Okay, Now this is fun. Great pics of Canada's great cities. Wow, would I be out of line if I begged you all for more. Love this stuff. I surely can't afford to travel this vast country as often as I would like, nor be able to keep current the many skyline images that I try so often to capture in my travels so it is all the more interesting to some of these cities instantly. Everytime these threads start, I start looking up airfare prices to a bunch of Canadian destinations! Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa...and even need to check out Hamilton! Fantastic shots from everywhere - really shows the diversity of our cities.
And after 2 years in Van, I wasn't expecting to really miss it - but I sure missed blooming Rhodos, Azeleas, Cherry, and Magnolias...all set against such a beautiful backdrop - thanks for the reminder Mr X2.

I have a short (3-hours or so) layover in Montreal in a couple of weeks on the way to Quebec City, anyone know what would be the quickest (affordable) way to get back and forth between Trudeau/Dorval airport and downtown? (Would I even have enough time? I've never been to the airport there and I'm not familiar with the distance and whatnot.)
someone123
06-26-2007, 01:07 AM
It's too bad that there is no frequent, direct Halifax-Quebec City flight. A three hour connection is a long time to wait for what should be a short trip.
Dorval is actually pretty close to downtown Montreal.
malek
06-26-2007, 03:25 AM
Dorval is far from downtown not because of the distance but because of the traffic and no direct rail connection.
In 3 hours, depending on the time of the day, I would say you don't have enough time.
The fastest way to get downtown is by taxi and it will cost you 30-35$ each way, 20 mins each direction, about 2hours to walk around before going back to the airport... very tight.

This is the best skyline shot i've ever seen of Winterpeg:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/22/179972440_15983b8a1a_b.jpg
The reason it's so great is because it includes that huge 38 story residential tower on the left that is almost in the suburbs, and very few shots of Winnipeg's skyline include that building.
And this is the best skyline shot i've ever seen of Edmonchuk:
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/3245/5263km8.jpg
This shot is great because it isn't the cliche shot that everyone takes from the river valley side of the city that puts the Telus Buildings front and center, but misses most of the other buildings. This shot shows off the skyline a lot better because it gets all the other buildings. The only problem is, the Telus Tower got hidden.

That building is 55 Nassau if you didn't know. I really like that view of Winnipeg. It captures pretty much all that defines the skyline I guess. I've been up close to 55 Nassau, and it's pretty tall, but there are also 2 other towers there I think. Called Evergreen Towers. It marks the end of Osborne Village and the entrance to downtown via osborne.

I've been meaning to take some shots of the skyline from the south end of the city around the jubilee overpass on pembina and from around the safeway parking lot farther down on pembina , they seem to be the best views of the Peg's skyline i think

Every Winnipeg skyline shot should be required (by law ideally) to include a KFC.
That would be a copycat of Thunder Bay's manditory McDonald's law. Can we sue?

Wow. I love that Toronto pano. Thanks Whistler.
EDIT: And that Calgary pano looks sharp, but for the love of God, when will someone develop those parking lots along 9th and 10th Aves?!! Its the shame of the city. For shame, Calgary, for shame...

This one's beautiful, but definitely fake. Vancouver isn't anywhere close to a mountain that size, especially from this angle.

Telephoto lenses make things look closer than they are in real life. What a camera sees is not the same as what the human eye sees.
^They sure can.

I was responsible for the dissemination of this picture, which is quite possibly the best picture ever taken of Victoria's skyline. The picture actually extends further to the right than what you see here, which means you can't see Victoria's two tallest buildings. I still have the picture even though it's on newsprint, and the reason it's on news print is because it was taken by a staff member of the Victoria Times-Colonist (Darren Stone, i believe) a couple of years ago from out in Metchosin with a 600mm zoom lens, thus making Mt. Baker look like it's right in our back yard.

Actually, I've seen Mt Baker look that massive from certain vantage points in the city, and in other areas look much smaller.

:previous: Where was this pic taken from? ... somewhere along the Niagra Escarpment or Toronto Island or New York state or?
Niagara Escarpment is where most of those come from, right around Niagara-on-the-Lake, iirc.

I think that photo would have been taken near Fonthill (or a little west of it), south of the Niagara Escarpment - nearly 70 km. from the CN Tower. That is near the highest part of "Niagara Region". I doubt it was taken from Niagara-on-the-Lake.
There was a pano of Toronto that was very similar to this one that was posted about 1 year ago and it was taken very close to the "Lookout Golf & Country Club" just outside of Fonthill.
Fonthill is too far from the lake, it's down by Welland. I would guess this is between St.Catharines and Niagara-on-the-Lake because you can't see the QEW, which hugs the shoreline pretty closely between St. Catharines and Hamilton.
