I find the maps on maps.live.ca better for canadian cities than on google earth. You could really zoom in close in maps.live.ca and see good detail. Ya'll should check them out!

The live images seem much clearer with more detail... however they are only slightly less out of date than Google's images (I can guess the live image for downtown Calgary comes from sometime summer 2006 (I could be more precise if I look at my development photos)... and the google image is from 2001 or 2002...

there is no www, it is just maps.live.ca (which in turn redirects you to local.live.com)

maps.google.com just added street view function for a few major US cities. It's amazing.. you have to check it out. It only came available a few days ago.
That puts Google on my #1 list. I can't stand live.ca's interface. As far as web based navigation goes, google maps is superior.
For programs, google earth is good for street level - however Nasa Worldwind is good for other things - it's free as well

For Fredericton, live.ca's imagery is newer (~2006 compared to ~2004), but Google's is clearer.
They don't even have any imagery for Saint John or Moncton...Google wins there.
http://www.flashearth.com
It combined Live Maps, Google Maps, Yahoo Maps, Ask Maps, NASA Terra Daily (what the earth looks like from space, taken around 10am local time and compiled into a large map, you can zoom in enough to make out medium sized cities like Kenora, Cornwall, etc. and it even highlights major forest fires) and a couple others. Additionally, you can rotate the map, similar to Google Earth and similar programs, so it isn't always "north is up".
It's a really cool program. If you city isn't covered by one map, just switch to another. The fact that they're all from different dates allow you to see entire subdivisions disappear when you switch between them, most noticeable in Calgary and the GTA.

Google Earth will continue to set the standard - I fully agree with Kevin Foster's comment about the interface. As well, there is a continually growing developer community outside of Google using it to build add-ons (National Geographic images/tours, Panoramio, NASA overlays, etc). It will emerge as clearly the better product...one such example is conversion of the "official" 3-d Berlin model to GE. The level of detail in the Berlin train station is a sample of where this is headed:

Live Local/Virtual Earth is generally better for the major cities, but google maps/earth has better imagery for the countryside or for minor cities, so it all depends what you are looking for...

Live local has more recent and cleaner satelite imagery of major Canadian and American cities, but lags more, has a more annoying interface, and much, much less area covered with pictures compared to Google Maps.

It works fine on my crappy windows 98. Perhaps you are only looking at areas not covered by them? Either that, or you're going somewhere else. If this doesn't work, then I have no idea what the problem is: http://maps.live.com/

I thought it may be active-X problem or a Java problem.
I'm using sun Java
Java Plug-in 1.5.0_06
Using JRE version 1.5.0_06 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
User home directory = C:\WINDOWS

A lot can change in 3-4 years as you know. For Toronto the changes are huge for some areas.

Up until a couple of months ago, I was able to view the "Birds Eye View" photos on the Microsoft mapping and now I can't. Is anybody else having this problem and what was the solution. The Birds Eye View let you look at views at an angle and adjust the direction etc. It was an interesting feature, that covered some limited areas that Microsoft had in terms of coverage.
