View Full Version : BALTIMORE | TWO new Tallests!!!

StevenW
Jun 2, 2007, 11:09 AM
The RWN Group has proposed these two awesome projects. Though it looks like the same twin tower renderings, they are two different addresses. So, actually, it is a twin project consisting of four towers together.
The towers are proposed as 65+ floors and 76 floors, counting crowning top.

I like the designs a lot. The taller portion of these towers look to rise well over 800 ft. in the air.

What do you all think about these projects?

Really a great looking building. Would look great in the city. Hope it becomes a reality.

Meh. I think it will look great assuming the podium will be blocked by other other buildings in view. What I really hate today are skyscrapers with awkward podiums, and no real flow from podium to tower. Lamentably, it happens all too often. In this case, I can imagine a horrificly ugly concrete parking garage 'covered' with some loose Libeskind-esque strands of steel every once and a while. The base looks no good at all.

The towers are nice though and the windfarm is a good use of the space.

Not bad. I really like it. I hope it gets built too. I really like all the little wind turbines between the two towers.

It's hard for me to even imagine those towers on the Baltimore skyline.WOW

The towers themselves look fine. Not fantastic but certainly eye catching. I too hate the podium/base. They just don't seem to include the human urbanism element, almost fortress like.

I don't really like them. They just look....boring to me. Maybe I'll change my mind once I see how they look incorporated into the skyline.

I agree. The tops look like they could be interesting, but the base is a mess. Baltimore can and should do better than that.

Johnland
Jun 2, 2007, 10:44 PM
Seems to be a general theme that the towers are good, but the base is awful. What is the deal with buildings today?! So many seem to have those big_box_bases. I know we are a car addicted nation and therefore must build first and foremost for parking considerations, and then seem to stick on a building while we're at it. But really, there should be more consideration to blending, hiding, or better yet, just eliminating the stupid box bases. It's 2007, can't we figure out some other way to address the all important parking factor!

StevenW
Jun 2, 2007, 11:49 PM
the base is kinda sad. wish it was one flowing tower. but, for baltimore, it ain't that bad. if built, the city will definately catch someones eye driving by on interstate 95. :D

I wouldn't hold your breath for anything that large to get built there anytime soon, regardless of the use, especially in that area of downtown.

What is the use anyway? I can see maybe office use working there in 5-10 years, maybe apartments. But it is not a good area for hotel or retail since it's not near the convention center or the waterfront.

I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up but where is the ground floor retail!? Retail at base of this tower would nicely distract your attention from that horrible parking structure. I seriously hope that are not thinking of putting advertisement on it lol Baltimore is not a times square, and doesn't need to be turned into one..

It's probably unfair to criticize this proposal without further detail on it, but this particular area of downtown has blocks and blocks of vacant retail storefronts. It would be a very risky move to put retail there (let alone a 60+ storey tower), you'd be much better off at Harbour East or on the waterfront.

But I agree, I wouldn't place to much seriousness in this proposal.

Wow, I'm jealous! :( Hope it gets built.

PeterSmith
Jun 3, 2007, 1:58 AM
The base may not turn out to look like that at all. The developer is proposing to build this tower in two phases, with the first phase being the base, which will include retail and parking, and the second phase being the mixed use tower. The base could begin construction by the end of the year (one forumer on SSC with inside information stated that work would begin in August on the first property), and the tower would be built later and tailored to the market (probably around 2010).

So it is possible that the architect who designed the towers pictured is not the same architect who has designed the base. What we do know is that the city recently sent the design back to the architect to redesign because they said the entrance was not grand enough for such an iconic tower.

So long story short, there is still hope that the base may eventually be worthy of the rest of the towers, which I think are beautiful.

Dalton
Jun 3, 2007, 4:46 AM
I hate it. Just looking at it makes me anxious for some reason. It's too frenetic, like it was designed by an architect with ADD.

I almost feel like the emperor in "Amadeus" saying that one of Mozart's operas "has too many notes". But then, this isn't Mozart. This design really needs to be broken down and simplified.

But the renderings are exactly the same. I bet that the developer is just pondering over which location to choose.

I seriously hope that one set of twins will be built. I even like the podium.

Yes, Baltimore will have at least 2 new tallests (maybe 3 or 4) by the time these Naing towers get built, AND there will be other close to what is now the tallest builing being built. The Baltimore skyline is for sure growing!!!!

Do you guys really think that Baltimore would waste money on all these proposed skyscrapers??I Mean Lets Get Real.I've been living in Baltimore for about 16 years and I know VERY well that Baltimore isnt going to Approve ANY of these proposals with everything else going on in Baltimore.Do you guys ACTUALLY think that the city's going to waste time building other skyscrapers any taller than the Legg Mason building?I THINK NOT!I mean Sure, I would LOVE to see Baltimore's Skyline BOOM with Action, but I know its not going to happen,at least not anytime soon.Baltimore has MORE very Important things to worry about to even consider building skyscrapers 450ft+.If your a TRUE Baltimorean, than you would Definitely have to have SOME common sense to even agree with what im saying..Anyone that cares to Disagree,PLEASE REPLY BACK TO ME!

BrooklynChulo90
Oct 16, 2007, 4:37 AM
On a POSITIVE note compared to my last message,If ALL of these Proposals were to be Approved,That would be a Miracle.Downtown should be its OWN district if it isnt already because it really is going through a lot of Changes. For Example,Vue Harbor East and 414 Water Street(which are BOTH around 310-345 ft tall with 414 Water Street being AROUND 20ft taller than the Vue Harbor East)were the biggest changes/gainers to the skyline and they were built very fast.Even though they are nowhere Near as tall as all of these other proposals, I think that Vue Harbor East and 414 Water Street Towers are just the baby steps of what's yet to come.I REALLY hope that ALL these Proposals will get accepted because the Majority of Baltimore's Skyline has remained the same for over 15 years and seeing the same skyline gets kind of old,you know?It doesnt matter what part of Downtown its located,I just want to see something get built that FINALLY surpases the Legg Mason Building(529 ft).By the way,I Live in the Most Extreme Southeastern Part/District of the city and I could see these Buildings from my house and to see new buildings built would be so great. The thing that sucks is that if any of these buildings were to be approved, there final pieces will be put in place by the year 2011 and thats still 4 years from now, which means that they have to make their decisions and approve them very fast because your typical skyscraper takes 3-4 years to build.Speaking of Being Approved,Does anyone REALLY know if the 10 Inner Harbor is Approved??How About the 300 East Pratt Street??If the 300 East Pratt street were to be approved, that alone would be great because its supposed to have 50 floors which would definitely be bigger than the Legg Mason Tower..So Yea,Are They REALLY approved or are they STILL proposals...Someone that REALLY knows,Respond/Reply A.S.A.P!!!!

Are those Twin Towers really proposed for BALTIMORE?I Agree with that person that said that this proposal looks very TOKYO-Like.Its not something that would fit into Baltimore's Skyline. If these towers are really proposed for Baltimore, than be ready at any moment for the design to change because its not really a Baltimore-type structure.I Mean, don't get me wrong,I LOVE the design. Its a VERY-WELL Designed Skyscraper but i doubt that Baltimore will ever Approve this. The 10 Inner Harbor has a better chance of being approved than this. But hey,you never know,I Could be wrong and they probably will Approve it. I Mean, Look at the Chicago Spire, its being built as we speak and it will be the Tallest Skyscraper in America. So you never know because Baltimore's skyline is changing and needs to continue with that.So I Maybe wrong

10 Inner Harbor is approved. But, the design has changed. More office space added.

And, you will find, most all people on this Forum like Baltimore and want it to succeed, even though they don't live in Baltimore.

These developments take time. Paitence is needed. The skyline WILL get bigger and taller.

Hey Noob
In case you haven't looked around, everyone judges everyones skyline. Its not hate, its stating the obvious, because when i think of Baltimore, nothing but the teams that play there come to mind.....and harbors, lots and lots of harbors. So i think Balti needs these towers to give it a sky line so the country can know it more for its city then its teams.

take a dip in that huge harbor and chilll out man. If it is approved and soon construction is starting then get us some news clippings, press releases or even a web address. Part if being in here is that you have to go out and find info on your own sometimes and be the one who breaks the news.

Why does it seem like im the youngest one in here..lol..this seems like a site for people who r like 25 or older..I no u didnt mean it literally but nobody can pay me enough to go into that dirty Harbor.I've chilled down now because i just found out that the Legg Mason Tower and the Four Seasons Hotel is a GO!The Four Seasons will be the 3rd Tallest Skyscraper in Baltimore being at around 494 ft.Hey,it wont be taller than the Legg Mason but at least it made it to Top 5 Tallest in our city. Its going to beat our William Donald Shaffer Building and thats good enough for me.But im still hoping that we get that 10 Inner Harbor. You live in Dallas so these skyscrapers are babies compared to what you've seen because Dallas has skyscrapers way bigger than ours, but thanks for caring for Baltimore. You know we need the 10 Inner Harbor because it seems like Baltimore's future depends on it.
