Went to a great speaker last night at the UofA on city region studies:

"Looking Forward" 2007
Urban and Regional Research in Canada

Bringing together the leading researchers from across the country

June 21, 2007
Lister Centre, University of Alberta, Edmonton

What are the pressing issues facing cities and regions in Canada? How are researchers working with civil society, municipal governments, private sector and others to understand the complexities of urban and regional development?

What are the key research questions that need to be addressed in the future, in order to ensure that Canada's Municipalities thrive?

for more information on this:

The City-Region Studies Centre is a partnership of the University, Alberta Capital Region Alliance, governments, and business leaders to assist municipalities, communities, and enterprises in making our urban regions exemplars of social and economic vitality, good governance, and good civic life.

The Centre will become a resource hub at the University of Alberta by providing research, information and liaison services, as well as customised learning opportunities. By providing a strategically-located centre within the region, the CRSC will generate new ideas and build on best practices from around the globe to stimulate new and informed discourse on significant social, environmental and civic matters. It will bring together resources through lectures, seminars, research and policy studies and community engagement. Thereby, it will provide a focus for informed debate and dissemination of ideas to promote continued innovation and action to shape the city-region as an exemplar of a vibrant, creative and dynamic environment.

It was interesting how they grouped the metropolitan areas in Canada:

Group A:

Montreal and area
Toronto & Extended Golden horseshoe
Edmonton - Calgary Corridor
Vancouver & lower mainland

Group B:

Halifax
Quebec City
Ottawa - Gatineau
Winnipeg

This was essentially the 1st national conference on this issue and i thought it would be someone of interest to everyone here seeing how munipalities versus region debates is becoming a hot topic.
