We all know that the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics will prove to be great business opportunity for organizations who have chosen to sponsor the event. But how would you position the city so that even after the Olympics, Vancouver would seem like the most attractive place not only to live, but work?
So that being said, how would you market Vancouver?
ps. No this isnt an assignment, just thought this would be interesting discussion, especially for those actually going into marketing.

I would market Vancouver as world class urban centre, a modern cosmopolitan port city well connected to the world but on the edge of civilization. A gateway to the world and to the pristine wilderness. Vancouver really is a gateway city, a short drive away from the United States, Whistler and the ferries to Victoria, we have a world class airport and Canada's largest seaport.
Of course this city can easily be marketed on its livability and cultural diversity alone. We have world class, restaurants, parks, galleries, nightlife and major league sports. Vancouver is an events city, I think the no fun city image is dead; Vancouver is a fun place to be, it is the cultural and entertainment Capital of both Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest.
Vancouver has a good transportation system; it is the only jurisdictions in Canada with decreasing commute times. Our modern public transit system is for the most part easy to use and serves the region well. The city also has an excellent network of traffic calmed cycling routes.
There is really no shortage of marketing material.
^ i generally agree with you, but i do think our galleries and sport teams need a lot of improvement. The VAG needs to be bigger (and it's getting it soon), the Vancouver Museum/Space Centre are pathetic.....imo, only the Museum of Anthropology is world-class (and it's getting a whole lot bigger with its expansion). I wouldn't call Vancouver having a world-class sports scene either.....all we have is the NHL.....the CFL doesn't really cut it.
We still need to work on our culture, entertainment, and shopping. I'd say the restaurants we already have are amazing and definetely world class.

Luongo makes it world class.
When a city markets itself as "world class" you immediately know that it isn't. No "world class" city calls itself that.

Well in a sense (JUST IN A SENSE EVEN THOUGH I AM ONE) that the residents in the region are starting to get a little full of themselves. And one of the reasons is that the people of the GVRD feel it's a privilege to live in this city. I mean, many other cities ENVY our lifestyle: Atlanta for instance [as reported in Pacificmetropolis]. However, despite being an urban oasis, like Mr. X said, we still need to work on a lot: art museums, crime, transportation, etc.

Sports are a non-issue for most visitors/potential residents and play little if any role in attracting people. Once people move here they might take a liking to a the local teams but seriously, we offer nothing that every other medium-sized city already offers.
What's truly unique is our cultural heritage. Tourists (http://www.indianer-welt.de/reise/alaska04/vancouver1.htm) are fascinated (http://www.cleverwomen.de/reiseziele/british_columbia.php) by First Nations culture. Vancouver contemporary artists are better known in Europe than they are in British Columbia.
That, and our incomparable scenery and easy access to wilderness.

Yes they do. They just never use the words "World Class", lol and I was not suggesting Vancouver do that.
From Tourism New York
Welcome to New York City
Come discover all the history, culture and diversity that set us apart from the rest. Feel the energy that infuses our streets. Visit museums and galleries, enjoy Broadway shows. Shop for designer fashions or seek out a rare find. Dine in award-winning restaurants or savor ethnic cuisines at neighborhood eateries. The five boroughs are yours to explore. Search the Calendar of Events to see what's happening.
Read between the lines, people know what a world class city has.
