Some of these new trains in part 1 look very sexy :)
It seems, KM, you didn't fancy Bratislava as much s Prague or Ljubljana, but I'm sure there are more beautiful places... or is it the actual general image of the city? If so, I believe, it's only a matter of few years as they fix these run-down facades.

Those trains are in Vienna, a suburb of Bratislava;)

But yeah, I actually let off a tear when I saw that Tesco store. Even in Belgrade, where usually everything goes once you bribe the right person, there are absolutely no such stores downtown - only smaller cornersop-style stores exist. I can't imagine the reaction if one was to be built in a similar location.

And this "Tesco", a chain that I visited for the first time here in Bratislava...it was really sad for me to see the huge crowd inside, like they've never seen anything like it. Tesco couldn't compete even in Serbia.

Hello. SrbijaCG, you are right, not everything in Bratislava looks great, there are a lot of streets and places that need to be restorated, especially the main railway station is the shame of the city, but it will be reconstructed in a few years, also the bus station and a lot of other projects is proposed.

There are 4 Tesco stores in Bratislava, one of them is in the centre on Kamenné námestie, it was former commie Prior department store. It will be reconstructed or demolished and the square will look different from today. Well, the crowd could be caused by the high amount of tourists in the city.

Wizzard, what is the demographic/labor situation in Slovakia these days? I mean, is it like in Lithuania/ Latvia where so many young people moved to other EU countries for jobs (Germany, UK, and Ireland mostly) that there is serious shortage of labor force?

Hello, anm. About labor situation in Slovakia, we have still one of the highest unemplyoment rate in EU, but also, there are new work opportunities every day. In some professions, we have even a lack of qualified workers and we need to get them from abroad (Ukraine, Romania, etc.) Also, many of people travel to abroad for higher salary, especially people in medicine.

Btw, maybe it could be nice not to have large department stores in the centre, but people are living there and they also need to do some shopping.

Now this thread illustrates the quaintness that was not represented in the first thread. Much of the central city was beautified between 1997 and 2006, but many of the run-down buildings not in the central core looked much the same both times I was there. Slowly but surely the city is making itself over. I think the pace is beginning to pick up though.

@ Wizzard: you can get some workers maybe from China or Ukraine, Romaniana work for big wages that you aren't able to pay, maybe Austria could pay high wages!
Btw, Bratislava, even it's a small city, looks brilliant!

ady26, no offense, okay, you are in EU, but still one of the least rich countries in EU. Yes, Austria is still about twice better than Slovakia, but still better Slovakia than Romania. And you are right, the salary in Romania is much better than in Ukraine.
