Hey guys... I paid a visit to your fine city early last week and got some constructrion shots in your amazing Buckhead district. Absolutely amazing progress since my last visit in March '06.

most excellent. with sovereign, the mansion, terminus and the rework of peachtree.....this area is emerging with an urban identity that stands on it's own. thanks for the pics!

Thanks guys! Yeah, I cannot get over how dense the Peachtree corridor has become, a true 'canyon' effect is emerging. I love how the street winds through the district, creating a unique view at every turn.

Yeah, the Buckhead/Lennox area has certainly come a long way in just the past 10-15 years. Check this aerial shot of Lennox Square circa the 1960's (I believe this faces northeast):

Like many mid-20th century malls, Lennox started out as outdoor 'plaza' and was eventually enclosed. Kind of funny...things have come full circle in the retailing industry, as the outdoor plaza/lifestyle center is all the rage, in lieu of new indoor mall construction. Why isn't it walkable? I've walked in Buckhead many times and it was fine...I didn't come across anything insurmountable. There is always a lot of traffic whizzing by, but that doesn't take away the area's walkability.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I drive through Buckhead and especially around Lenox, I always see people on the sidewalks. Even if walkers aren't abundant, that doesn't automatically lead to the conclusion that it's not walkable...it could also mean that people would rather drive. :)

The area around Lenox could certainly stand some serious improvement in terms of walkablility but, yeah, I've walked around there many times, too. Hopefully some of the projects which are underway now will help.

Other parts of Buckhead are better, however. We had an office in the Village in the 1990s and pretty much walked everywhere. I lived down at Muscogee and Peachtree for a while and that area was quite walkable, too.

Yes, the village was easily walkable - I haven't been in that area for probably 2 years...I bet it's not nice right now. :) Buckhead could definitely use some assistance in making the area pedestrian friendlier, but to say it isn't walkable, period, is a little dramatic.

I did not see a single pedestrian in any of those pictures. I used to live very nearby on a residential street called Stratford near Phipps Plaza. This was 10 years ago. Back then you could walk out of the MARTA station up on Peachtree and witihin about 50 yards in one direction the sidewalk just disappeared. In fairness I have to admit that there was a lot of construction going on at the time, but I have always been amazed at how little attention the city of Atlanta has paid to pedestrian amenities in areas that are regarded as "urban" and "pedestrain friendly". I figured that after the Olympics the city would be shamed into doing something about this, but I am not sure much has been done.

I'm thinking that there are no pedestrians partially due to the time of day the photos were taken. I can't really tell what time of day it was, but there are very few cars in the pictures as well - fewer than I've ever seen in that area...so it may have been an off-peak time.

Also, the photographer said that they are drive-by photos. It would probably be easier to get pedestrians in the photos if the photographer were a pedestrian too. Also, the photographer was trying to capture the buildings under construction, not the pedestrian traffic. I've seen this same thing many times in this forum - often the photographer will wait until pedestrians pass before he takes the shot...
