My boyfriend and I are going to Mexico City for his birthday from 8/1-8/7. We are staying in the La Reforma area. We have some plans, but we would appriceate any advice of places to see and eat. I would be obliged for any help.

There are many places to go, but I recomend you to take the TURIBUS, it takes you through many of the most important turistic places of Mexico City;Reforma, Downtown, Polanco, Zona Rosa, Chapultepec Park. You buy the ticket for one day for about 11 dollars per person and you can use the bus all the day, it has many stops and you can get down and take a walk and then wait for another bus to come to continue the tour.

are you a male or female? if you are a gay couple there is a plethora of things you guys can do around the area where you are staying (zona rosa)- especially when it comes to nightlife, cafes, restaurants etc.....

also, dont miss a stroll thru the trendy condesa neighborhood and have some drinks at a cafe in that area. According to a recent discovery travel television show, condesa is the most "in" neighbohood in all america (western hemisphere) right now

coyoacan (plaza hidalgo) also has enough attractions to fill up your entire trip without visiting anything else in the city. plaza hidalgo on the weekend is a happening place that fills with all types of people. i once read that it was considered the most vivrant, fun, and happening square in the world.

around there is also frida khalo's house (now a museum), leon trotsky's house (also a museum now).

another must is xochimilco (floating gardens).... rent a trajenera and drink some beer. listen to mariachis and watch locals get very drunk- always nice.

if you have on sunday evening and want a romantic dinner with views from above the city. go to the world trade center and have some lobster at the bellini restaurant on the 45th floor. the restaurant is revolves like a carousel (but very slow so you dont get sick).... basically in about one hour you will have a view of the whole city.

if you want the views, but not the food... go to the latin american tower in the centro (bellas artes subway station) and go to the 44th floor observatory. you will have good views of the city from there... on a clear day you will see the santa fe area of mexico city to the west, interlomas, and to the southeast you may see the eternally snow capped volcanoes that surround the city.

if i go on this post will take all day, so im just gonna list some things to do that i consider musts.... you obviously wont have time for it all so just choose what you will be most interested in.... google the following for more info


teotihuacan pyramids (huge archeological site)

tepoztlan, morelos (esoteric town)

la marquesa (park that separates mexico city and toluca full of pines and forrest)

desierto de los leones (another wonderful park)

san angel (romantic neighborhood with great restaurants and art life)

polanco (upscale neighborhood with some posh bars (area bar at habita hotel is ***** excellent))

chapultepec castle (and park)

zocalo-alameda (full of history, awsome architecture, and art)

izta-popo park- go climb iztaccihuat and have a close up of popocatepetl volcano both are very high elevations (2nd and 3rd highest in mexico)... expect freezing temperatures all year and snow... you must be acclimatized to go this high up (if you go from below sea level new orleans to 4500 meters you will probably have severy altitude sickness- which can be very dangerous).

An other suggestion for this trip is going to the National Museum of Antrophology and History on the Reforma Avenue, this is a must see visit if you want to know well the Mexican Culture.
I remember you that a very complete Frida Khalo Exposition is now in the Palace of Fine Arts in the downtown and you can go to the Cathedral and the Zocalo, the main plaza of our city.
If you like roller coasters you must visit Six Flags in the south of the city or "La Feria" in Chapultepec Park.
An other interesting visit in this park is the Chapultepec Castle, a nice beautiful building full of Mexican History and a great views of the City.

Definitely the Turibus tour is quite helpful and functional. You can use it as a transport with in the city too.

I was in Mexico City all of last week.

Without a doubt check out Teotihuacan. It was, for me, the single best thing I saw.

I also highly suggest the Turibus but only for one day in order to orient yourself. It isn't meant as a way of getting around (the buses don't run frequently enough to use it that way). I also HIGHLY suggest using the metro to get to where you need to go (to get to the pyramids you take the metro to the 'Autobuses del Norte' station, cross the street, and then take a bus from the massive bus station there).

Plaza Garibaldi is better with a large group -- at night. Going as a couple is bound to get you mobbed (and possibly mugged) if you look like a tourist.

I also wanted to second the trip to the Zocalo. It's the historic and political heart of the entire state and there is much to do. The turibus can take you there but so can the metro. While there, check out Cafe de Tacuba a few blocks to the west.

If you're an art lover there's currently a Frida Kahlo exhibit inside the Palacio de Bellas Artes (a building you have to see at least the exterior of).

I stayed in la zona rosa and hit many the clubs in that area. I went to the ancient ruins out side the city and Cathedral of Guadalupe on the 1st day. I toured Zocalo/Historic district on day two. Day three I spend the entire day at Chapultepec Castle/Park and dinner in Condesa. Day four I went to the Anthropology Museum and had lunch in Polanco. Day five we just relaxed and walked through Zona Rosa/Reforma/Zocalo taking in cafes and the architecture. My partner and I are planning another trip back. We absolutely loved it. We took hundreds of pictures. I will try to upload them later on.
