View Full Version : Rubble & Rebirth: The Quaint Downtown and Towering Beau Rivage (Part 3)

Red UM Rebel
Jul 19, 2007, 5:32 PM
Downtown Biloxi is rather dead, definately on the weekend. Insurance issues have caused problems. I love the little area though because the few shops still open are neat. During Mardi Gras the area is alive too. You can see though that MGM Mirage's Beau Rivage towers over everything, and its new neighboor Hard Rock Hotel & Casino had just opened when the pictures were taken. Hope everyone enjoys!

I will start the tour looking down Main Street from the Hard Rock:

A now vacant lot. The brinks indicate where the front entrance used to be.
It was a antique store.

Most cities in Mississippi, especially ones that have been around for more than 150 years have small squares. Biloxi, ever the Rebel, has always had the Vieux Marche, a long narrow street.

My favorite bookstore in the world. The owner is very interesting too. He is a grumpy older gentleman that sits behind his counter and smokes all day. He does not like children or loud noises. If you have any question about any book ever written though, he can answer it for you.

The towering Beau Rivage was opened in 1998. It was opened by Mirage under the direction of Steve Wynn. The first three to four years, this place was financial disaster. Then MGM Mirage was formed, and the resort was transformed overnight to one of the most successful outside Las Vegas resorts the company owns. The resort was built at the same time as her twin sister the Bellagio was being built in Las Vegas. It is the tallest building in the state of Mississippi currently.

Thanks! The Hard Rock literally just opened (Grand Opening Day) so that is where everyone was. It was actually kind of nice, normally there are quite a few people.

Nice overview. Sad to see so much still damaged. I assume the casino's are back up and running? I had assumed that most of them were almost a complete loss.

They were all destroyed except for one which is currenty my avatar picture (the IP). MGM Mirage spent 500 million dollars to have their fully restored in a years time. It took another year and 175 million to get the Hard Rock back open. All of the others except the IP are in temporary areas but building back larger and better than ever. There are eight casinos open in Biloxi and one in Gulfport.
