View Full Version : Huntsville, AL - A Sunday stroll through Big Spring Park

I went home to celebrate my Mom's birthday this weekend and decided to take some pics on my way back to the 'Ham.

For those of you who are not familiar with the area, Big Spring International Park is the central park for downtown Huntsville. Many significant buildings are arranged around it, including the Von Braun Center and the Huntsville Museum of Art. It was a nice day, and LOTS of people were out. Some of the photos won't reflect that because I waited for them to move, depending on the subject matter.

The Pics of Huntsville are Super. Having been their only three times the downtown area reminds me of a Mini Orlando with it many lakes around. I have always wondered why originally Huntsville was not included in the Interstate plans, what Huntsville has is considered a spur of the system. Again Huntsville is one beautiful city.

Great pics TimCity!, it was beautiful day, rabbi2007 the answer to your question is that when the interstate system was planned Decatur was
larger than HSV and was considered the main city as well as probably being in better position to connect with Nashville. Well 40 years later much to ALDOTS resistance we have the I-565 spur which in some ways is better I think.

It's one of the better downtown parks I've been to. Even though the park isn't enormous, it is the defining image that comes to mind when anyone says downtown Huntsville.

I hope Birmingham planners take a strong look at it when designing their Railroad Reservation Park.

Huntsville also has a nice skyline, it really does. It has a nice mix of architecture, and it is fairly tight, especially from certain angles. It just needs a little more height.

My wife and I like to stroll through the park with our daughter every now and then.... just haven't been able to lately because of these 100+ temps... :hell:

I proposed to my wife at that little light house by the red Japanese bridge. We used to climb up there and hang out because we were too broke to do much of anything else but hang out in Big Spring. Good times. :)

I first stumbled through Huntsville back in '79 and moved there in '81. When I first saw it, I thought it was a beautiful city, and still do :D The historic district is stunning, and Monte Sano mountain is very nice.

Interesting factoid: the source of Big Spring is a cave, upon which the downtown square sits. It emerges from the cave through a small bluff on the west side of the square.

Every time there is a proposal to add anything in/around the park, people go nuts. When they added the Art Museum, I was one of them. But it's worked out so well that I now feel I have to give them the benefit of the doubt. There is now a proposed addition to the Art Museum, and it's very controversial.

The city owns the land under the old Hilton hotel, so in the future, Big Spring Park may expand in that direction.
