These are today's Historic Calgary Week 2007 events:

- 1 p.m., Sandstone Church Tour Members from each of the three downtown sandstone churches will be on hand to share their favourite stories about the history of their congregation. Why did R.B. Bennett donate a window in one church and the chimes in another? What congregation did our Citizen of the Century, Colonel Walker, help establish?

Meet: The Cathedral Church of the Redeemer, 218 7th Ave. S.E.

- 2 p.m., Sandstone Church Tour

Meet: Central United Church, 131 7th Ave. S.W.

- 3 p.m. Sandstone Church Tour

Meet: Knox United Church, 506 4th St. S.W.

- 7 p.m., Official Opening Ceremonies

Come to Lougheed House for the opening ceremonies of Historic Calgary Week. Max Foran will present Boomtime's Child: Urban Sprawl in Calgary. It's an examination of how city policies, land developers and the fixation with single-density housing combined after 1950 to impose a relentless pattern of outward suburban expansion in Calgary. The evening's master of ceremonies will be Historic Calgary Week's chairman, Gary Ellis.

Meet: Lougheed House, 707 13th Ave. S.W.

^ I've seen the Mawson Plans. Queen's has them. They're really worth checking out.

City Beautiful was a very strange planning movement.

City Beautiful was a very strange planning movement.

Some of the most interesting aspects of Canadian architectural history for sure.
I've seen them before, but I think I will check them out. I'll be down there today anyway.

Very interesting plans, would have been a completely different city if they were followed through with.

Edit, you can see some of them on google.

Why is Calgary the way it is? It was first defined by rivers, rails, streetcars and the prairie town grid. Then the ancient Indian trails became expressways to serve our growing suburbs. UofC urbanist Bev Sandalack tells us about the plans, places and ideas that have shaped Calgary.
