For the past month I have been on a road trip to Nova Scotia. I drove through New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine on the way out, and through New Brunswick and Quebec coming back. First stop along the way was Hudson, NY. Here are some pics of this amazing little architectural gem. Although Hudson's population is only about 7,500 it feels bigger.

What I really like about Hudson, is that it is not overly "tarted up".

WOW, I could kick myself for not checking this place out when I was in the Hudson Valley a few years ago. So urban looking for a smaller town. And as you mentioned, some great old buildings there. Not all gussied up either. Great shots Mark, thanks.

I checked out a book about Hudson from the library last year. I plan to hit it the next time I go up to New England.

Great looking pics.

Nice shots. Passed thru Hudson more times than I can count on Amtrak (maybe I was on that train you captured) but never been there. The train station is the coolest looking station in the Hudson Valley and I always assumed the city looked just as cool. Now I know it does, Thanx.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention something. So that's your tyke on the bike, eh. He has a happy look on his face in the first pic, but by the time you get to the pic in front of the B&B, he seems to be thinking: "What's up with my Dad and taking all these pictures of cities?"

;) j/k, thanks again for the pics Mark.

Excellent pictures. Most of this town looks really nice and colourful.
I find that a lot of American towns look larger than Canadian towns of the same size.

Hudson is beautiful. Still not incredibly vibrant but the city has really turned itself around in the last few years. The city is not served by any major highway or interstate, so there is little sprawl and it has that "middle of nowhere" feel going for it. It's fairly diverse, too.

Not sure what kind of industry they have there, but it is the county seat and there is a fairly large hospital in town.

Great Federalist architecture! Tell me, is the Opera House still an operational theatre?

Wow, I grew up 20 minutes north of here, and I'm quite surprise to see Hudson make an appearance on SSP.. great to see the Hudson Valley get repped on this board!

This city has seen a major influx of Manhattanites in the last decade or so, and they're the ones that have started to turn the city around (although the natives are still fairly poor). Because of them there's now an "Antiques Row" formed on one of the main streets (Warren Ave) that is a regional draw, plus they got the Opera House going, and yes it is still in operation.

Oh my God! What a beautiful place!

I am so afraid that people will want to make a quick buck and build a towering highrise in the middle of town. A futuristic skyscraper will always look out of place in such a pristine, classic American town.

From what I can see in the photos, the neighborhoods all fit in together to make a coherant "whole". That's what makes it great! That's what makes it romantic and nostalgic.

Sure, I can see that a lot of money is needed to fully restore some of the buildings. I'd suggest a bed and breakfast atmosphere like they've got in the UK. Bring back some Barbershop quartets! Bring back all the old-time music! Throw "ultra-retro" parties in the parks! Dress up for the occassion! The European tourists will love it!

Here is my rant which I put on a lot of threads:

Our present society may not treasure American history but that shouldn't mean that we destroy due to indifference. There may come a time in our great land when people turn off the television in order to relish reading Huckleberry Finn. One day they may grow sick of the ultra-crowded cities of the future and they will want to retreat to the (what's left of the countryside).

We owe it to future generations. Let's leave at least a few places scattered across the U.S. which will forever give an old-time feel.

Additionally I have the strange opinion that we owe it to the deceased Americans of the past. A lot of Americans worked hard to build beautiful city halls and other public works in the past centuries. To destroy them for parking lots and cheap highrises is an utter disgrace in my opinion.

The people of Hudson seem to be doing a fine job! I'm proud of them. I hope that they continue to believe in themselves. Believe in the strength of classic Americana. Don't ruin it! I wish that they could be earning buckets of gold for their efforts but alas, they may have to wait until the next revolution in American thought for that to happen. The revolution may be closer than we think...

Nice looking place. Lots of Second Empire that need a little rehabbing, but overall, very nice.
