View Full Version : Hutchinson, Delaware: Ii

I have started a thead in the past entitled Hutchinson Delaware, but I was unhappy with the city and the layout. Now I have made a new city in the same location only with a different layout. This city is much bigger, better, and more detailed.

Once again I will not be putting textures on the buildings because this is my laptop for college and I do not want to waste space. I also don't wan't to spend all that time cropping and fitting.:D

Here is some new information:

-The city has had a crippled infastructure for many years that could not handle the 3 million residents of the city and the large amounts of commuters. Now the Delaware DOT is undergoing a huge revitalization of the cities highway system, including the erection of new highways, and expanding existing ones. However, the process is going through a long duration given that the construction is snaking through the cities dense streetscape.
-Yes, the Hutchinson Horents Basketball team made its new home in a newly built indoor arena that can hold 60,000 fans. The arena was built in additon with the highway system. All part of the the cities revitalization. The stadium is located on St. Marks Island, an island that has the reputation of the cities ghetto, crack deals, and crime. However in recent years St. Marks Island is a desirable place to live. The toilet has been flushed due to the cities Mayor: Rocco Delamani, who has a zero tolerance for crime.
-The cites tallest building or buildings as I should say are the Twin Towers of the Hutchinson International Business Center. The Complex is home to 30 million square feet of class A office space, 3 million square feet of dining, concourse, station, and retail, and 1 million square feet of hotel. The buildings started construction in 1998 and finished in 2003. When 9/11 came there was a debate whether or not to keep the twins at there current height at the time at 50 floors. The city officals eventually decided 2 months after the the attack to build them 115 floors each (10 floors higher than the original plan) at 1700" each. However, the plannes tower 3 at 80 floors, was stopped at 70 floors due the construction budget. (Today the three mega columns and the core of tower 3, stand 10 feet above the roof still waiting for the workers to start floor 71).

I am planning on making the city very large with: many highways, a major airport, shipping port, a suspension bridge, a very large mall, and many more buildings.

That is all for now. There will be frequent updates!:D

This is a pick of the currently under construction: Cross Hutchinson Expressway that links Albom to St. Marks to Downtown. This will soon to be a major part of the Hutchinson Highway system. This particular spot of the expressway is on St. Marks Island.

In the background you can the Twin Towers of the Hutchinson International Business Center as well as other buildings in Downtown.

More to come soon, and remember to leave a comment, please.

Its just the angle. The same can be said for the Shanghi World Financial Center at a certain angle. It's all how you look at the building.

I was speaking mainly of the spires though

Well in this scenario they are used for broadcast towers as one of their functions, therefore a more skinny stick like spire wouldn't do the job. Look at the spire on the Freedom Tower as an example.

I tried that and to be honest I didn't care for it. To me the purple is more distinctive features as oppose to the white where the buildings blend in with eachother.

Just my perspective.

Other notable buildings are the:
-KeyLife Financial and Insurance Regional Headquarters (with the helipad ontop).
-Hutchinson Central Station (the cities largest rail hub).
-The newly built Hutchinson Convention Center.

I will get more in depth with those an other buildings later.

That is officially all for tonight. Enjoy!

scroll>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/3264/keyax9.jpg

The story of the KeyLife Building..............

KeyLife was a power financial corporation back in the 1960's who sought out to build their HQ in the Northeast. New York was harboring many financial leaders, and being that KeyLife wanted to stand out, they chose Hutchinson which at the time was still a small city. Part of standing out was doing something which was only done with the MetLife Building in NYC: Build the tower above an avenue. KeyLife in 1968 contructed their HQ above Vanderbuilt Avenue. A underpass/tunnel was erected below the building to hold the flow of traffic.

At first the people of Hutchinson were thrilled with the tower being that it was architecture that was new to the city and that it was bringing in major business and industry. Once completed something else was built which did not go over well with the public. Key Life erected a street wide 3 floor overpass that connected to Hutchinson Central Station. KeyLife did this to show how easy it is to get into the city and walk right into the building without the hassel of taking a cab, subway, bus, or walking.

In the mid 70's, KeyLife took a turn in the other direction. The company PanAm sued KeyLife for copying the building style of their HQ in Manhattan. KeyLife won the case but at a high financial cost. In the 70's droves (and I mean drove) of corporations were moving into the city. Large amounts of glass boxes were built to hold these corporations. (It is said by the people of Hutchinson that the 70's scarred their cities architectural features and turned them into gray cold lifeless holes).

With all the corporations moving in, KeyLife was seeing little business. Companys like Smith Barney, Merril Lynch, Goldman Sachs, MetLife, and others were buying out KeyLife stock like crazy. With the hellish 70's and 80's over for KeyLife, their compnay's future was heading to the end. In 1992 KeyLife announced their bankrupcy and by 1997 they were wiped off of the corporate map.

From 1997-2002 the building was vacant. It was old, out dated, and in dire need of repair. In late 2002 William H. Drake (the real estate mogul) bought the 60 floor monster and renovated it to a class A office tower.

TRI bought it in 2004 to use while their 75 floor building is being constructed next door. In early 2008, TRI is moving out, and the building is being divided up to a number of tenants.

Still to this day the KeyLife logo is on the top of the building. The building is still known as KeyLife by the public.

Sorry for all the reading, but it was a good story I thought. :P

I'll let you guy rest up for round two later today.

Please leave a comment and enjoy!:D

Today's update will be one showing you the geographics of Hutchinson.

There are five major areas of the city: Downtown, St. Marks Island, Albom, and The Locks (2 seperate areas).

In this pic, it shows Downtown Hutchinson, St. Marks Island, and Albom. I've yet to do the locks.

The larger skyline is of course Downtown Hutchinson, and the smaller skyline is Albom city. Albom city is like a Co-op City/ Long Island city. It contains mid-rise brick tenaments, hotels, and office buildings. Albom city was developed in the early 60's for hotels to attract customers from the nearby Hutchinson International Airport. Now it has grown into more than that.

You will aslo notice in the pic, the currently under construction "Cross Hutchinson Expressway (the elevated highway)", and Interstate 80, "the below grade 6 land highway".

I am still working on areas of Albom right now and will post again when it's finished. Until then here's the current area.

The Locks are on either side of Downtown Hutchinson. East Lock is like a Bronx like area (very rough, many drugs, gangs, and trouble). West Lock is like Queens/Staten Island.

I'll get more into them later.

It's just a made up name. I don't think that's a name of an actual town or borough in this case.

Lots of interesting things in there. I like the land setup too, very neat with the island in the center.

I have a suggestion, I would add some more levels of curviness to the sides of the island and river that surrounds it, because they look really pointy now on the sides, kind of like a football shape.

Keep up the great work!

Above is a shot of the 80 floor Concord Tower built in 1928. It held the record for tallest building in the World for 3 years and the tallest in the city for 74 years eventually surpassed by the Twins of the International Business Center. There was an observation deck on the 80th floor (now only for tenant use) and a lounge and swimming pool on the 78-79th floor open to tenants of the building. The observation deck was closed to the public because the Twins of the IBC each contained one. It did not make sense to have three clustered together.

I'll have an update again for you tomorrow.

I am 50/50 right now on destroying Hutchinson as it is now and building something new with better:
-layout
-buildings

-and highways

I want to start with all of the infastructure work: highways, roads, bridges, tunnels, etc... and then put the buildings up.

I was more busy than I thought today, so I only have time for now to show you a quick pic/scene I put together in a couple of minutes.

You'll notice a lot of new development in this shot, which I will get more into as the week goes on. But for now, here it is:

Hutchinson was a chosen to be in a disaster movie entitled: ~Tidal Wave~. The movie is about a tidal wave hitting the East coast destroying cities such as New York, Boston, Philiadelphia, Staunton, Atlanta, Miami, Washington D.C., and Huthchinson, as well as the rest of the coast. Hutchinson was chosen for the cover shot.
