As promised, here are a few that I am fond of. Please post up some of your fav's that you wish could be influential upon our city.
Not all will be beautiful, thats for sure. There are aspects of these projects I like, and thats why they are here, not solely on aesthetic merit.
1. Kanchanjunga Apartments, New Bombay, by Charles Correa 1983
http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=16347&stc=1&d=1146057765
I love the adaptation of the old bungalow style common to this area, to the highrise form. I'm also a fan of the double height terraces.
2. Governor Philip Tower, Sydney, Denton Corcker Marshall, 1993
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/178/377772688_2c5bfb80a9.jpg
I like how the top blades emerge from the base as piloti
3. Louis Vuitton Tower, NYC, Christian de Portzamparc 1999
Sorry for the poor pic-
http://www.wirednewyork.com/images/lvmh_tower_night.jpg
I dig the folding facade. A first for a curtain wall.
4. Schuspielhaus, Basle, Diener & Diener, ongoing (2006)
http://www.architron.ch/projects/schauspielhaus/smarchs1.jpg
I love it all! Especially the glazing.
5. Clusters in the Air, Arata Isozaki, never built
http://www.thecityreview.com/arcnowf.jpg
I adore the attempt at reducing our surface impact.
6. Tower of the Winds, Yokohama, Toyo Ito, 1986
http://www.archidose.org/Blog/Old/winds.JPG
What a brilliant and beautiful concept. This is a light sculpture of 1300 lamps configured to respond to the wind. Great stuff.
7. Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, Jean Nouvel, 1987
http://www.linternaute.com/paris/magazine/diaporama/06/visites-audio/metrophone/images/8-institut-du-monde-arabe.jpg
Tasty use of glazing. Brilliant attempt at creating a new form of light diffusion on the south wall. It houses metal lenses that contract with the suns emergence. Doesn't always work, but it is spectacular.
8. Bibliotheque Nationale de France, Paris, Dominique Perrault, 1997
http://archiguide.free.fr/PH/FRA/Par/P13MasBNFPer.jpg
You can see why I like it.
9. GSW Building, Berlin, Sauerbruch Hutton, 2001
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/13/19048475_82bcb6cb70.jpg
http://www.lars-mueller-publishers.com/e/katalog/ausgaben_detail/026/gsw_01.jpg
10. Museum of American Folk Art, NYC, Tod Williams, Billy Tsien, 2002
http://www.arcspace.com/architects/williams_tsien/american_folk/1.jpg
Representative of the idea that architecture doesn't need to be light.
11.Tokyo Nara Tower, Tokyo, Ken Yeang, 1994
http://www.thecityreview.com/arcnowg.jpg
It's green, its different, and it took a hell of a lot of imagination.
There are 11 that I am fond of. I will post more later. Your turn...

The Grosvenor Phillip tower in Sidney is a great looking building. I like some of the others, but I have to say that the buildings I like (Grosvenor Phillip, Biblioteque Nationale, etc..) don't seem innovative. I don't see the point of building those kinds of buildings here in this era.
The innovative buildings like Tokyo Nara tower are the projects I would hate to see get built here.

Thanks for posting Arriviste - very cool buildings. I have to say I like most of them. The Nara tower though is really thought provoking. What a great building. I could look at it for hours. The GSW building is the direction I would like to see Calgary go.

I'm glad that we all have different tastes in architecture and that many types of buildings are built including those with a classic style - because I would hate to live in a city with only these types of buildings. I find them to be hideous but I guess architecture is subjective - just like art

Thanks for posting those pics Arriviste. I like most of the buildings, although I don't really want any of them built in Calgary. It would be great if the were built in Calgary 30 years ago.
The tower of the winds in Tokyo is the best, and I wouldn't seeing something like that built here even after it's already been done.

Arriviste-
not too sure about that Nouvel building. Jean's kind of a blowhard. not many of his buildings actually do what they are supposed to do.
The Institut's south wall has never actually worked. and the Cartier Foundation...come on total bullshit.

'It would be great if they were built in Calgary thirty years ago.' pffft we'll be lucky if we get that level of architectural rigor (Sauerbruch Hutton, Perrault) in Calgary in 50 years from now.

Well, in 50 years that dated look might be back in style by then. Don't get me wrong, I like the look of those buildings, but they a product of their time.

I would have to say i hate most of what you posted, especially the tower in Tokyo that looks like a pile of garbage. I guess to each his own, which makes the world interesting, if not always beautiful.

Am I the only one thinking that Kanchanjunga should be called Kanchanjenga? :D AMIRITE?
Ok, enough joking aside. I do think that is quite the interesting building, had I known about it I would have tried to check it out when I was in Mumbai in March.
Is the Tower of Winds just a sculpture? Or is it office/residential as well?
I LOVE the look of that Governor Philip Tower, the lines just seem nice and classy. Very simple and comes off quite well.
Edit: Wait a sec, is that Bombay building gone? Is that what the years reference is?

This is an SOM design. Fucking fantastic. I'd give my left nut for this to be built in calgary.

No question the Transbay tower is spectacular. I would give my left or roght one for this tower.
How much is this tower going to cost though? Is it realistic to expect Lacaille (or anyone for that matter) to offer designs like this in Calgary?

I like this project too and I don't usually like much of SOM's work. Just learned about it the other day actually. I think the whole TransBay project consists of a series towers (4, I think).

Unfortunately, it is not a foregone conclusion that this is the design that will be chosen. It is upo against two other designs - one by Pelli and another by Richard Rogers. Read about them here:

Man, if they reject that, it would be hugely disappointing.
