Brothers arrested in Friday night killing in Central City
by The Times-Picayune
Saturday August 15, 2009, 5:28 PM

New Orleans police arrested two brothers early today in connection with the murder of a 24-year-old New Orleans man Friday night in the 2100 block of South Liberty Street in Central City.

Kirk, 21, and Keith Kirk, 24, were arrested at their home in the 2100 block of Jackson Avenue less than seven hours after the 8 p.m. shooting, Officer Jonette Williams said in a news release. Both were booked with one count of second-degree murder, she said.

According to investigators, the Kirk brothers confronted Tyrone Anderson on his porch about some borrowed property, then fatally shot him in the torso.

Authorities found Anderson's body inside his home, Williams said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Also today, a man who was shot Friday night in a separate incident died at a local hospital, the Orleans Parish coroner's office said. Wendell Etienne, 54, died about 6 a.m. at the LSU Interim Public Hospital, said John Gagliano, chief coroner's investigator.

Etienne was shot several times about 9:15 p.m. Friday at the corner of Oliver White Avenue and Abundance Street in the Desire neighborhood. An autopsy is scheduled for today, Gagliano said.

Police had no immediate suspects in that killing.

UPDATE: NOPD investigating murders in eastern N.O., Algiersby The Times-Picayune
Saturday August 15, 2009, 10:45 PM

New Orleans police are investigating the city's two latest murders.

The first occurred in eastern New Orleans about 8:30 p.m.

Officers responding to a call of a shooting in the 7800 block of Shamrock Drive, near the corner of Curran Road, found a 21-year-old man in the driver's seat of a car, suffering from several gunshot wounds, said officer Jonette Williams, an NOPD spokeswoman.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not immediately available.

Detective Michael McCleery is in charge of the investigation.

About 45 minutes later, police were investigating a shooting across the river in Algiers that turned fatal.

Fourth District officers found a 24-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his head in the 1700 block of Hero Boulevard, off L.B. Landry Boulevard.

The man, whose identity was not available, died by the time he arrived at the Interim LSU Public Hospital, Williams said.

Detective Melanie Dillion is leading the investigation.

Police were not able to identify any motives or suspects in either killing late Saturday.

DAYTON — A 33-year-old Xenia man died Saturday, Aug. 15, after being robbed during a drug deal, according to police.

Police say Bryan Gillum, was in Dayton with two friends to buy heroin, like other victims in recent homicides.

“The dopers tell us Dayton has the most potent heroin,” said Lt. John Bardun of the Dayton Police Department.

The victim was shot behind 314 Ethel Ave. at around 5:30 p.m., ran two blocks and collapsed in the driveway at 2827 McCall Ave., Bardun said. The bullet hit the victim’s femoral artery and he died at Miami Valley Hospital.

The suspect, armed with a semi-automatic handgun, robbed the victim then drove off in a brown 1998 or 1989 Pontiac Grand Prix, Bardun said.

It was the 32nd homicide reported in Dayton this year. It was the third shooting of the day in Dayton, the only fatal.

A 26-year-old Dayton man remained in critical condition after being shot multiple times at 3 a.m. Saturday at 1510 Chapel St., police said.

A third shooting victim was questioned at Miami Valley Hospital.

At 1 p.m., Saturday, police were called to the Whitney Young Estates in the 4600 block of Germantown Street after people in a red Oldsmobile Aurora and dark Jeep Cherokee approached a group and began shooting. The victim was shot in the arm, police said.

OAKLAND — A man was shot to death and six others were wounded in separate shootings across Oakland on Saturday, police said.

The fatal shooting happened about 5:40 p.m. Saturday in West Oakland and claimed the life of Wayne Griffin, 22. It occurred in the 900 block of Willow Street, not far from where Griffin lived.

Officer Jason Andersen said Griffin got into a confrontation with a man who pulled a gun and shot Griffin several times before fleeing. Griffin died at Highland Hospital at 6:15 p.m. Saturday. Andersen said police have an idea what the motive was but would not elaborate.

The killing was Oakland's 66th homicide of the year. Last year at this time there had been 83 homicides.

The first shooting Saturday happened about 2 a.m. when three Vallejo men were wounded at Fifth Street and Broadway in Jack London Square. Police said the men may have been shot as the result of an altercation they got into with some other people at a nearby nightclub. None of their wounds were life-threatening, and no arrests have been made.

At 10:15 a.m., a man was shot in the 3200 block of Magnolia Street in West Oakland. The motive was unclear, and police apparently arrested a suspect later. The victim is expected to recover.

At 11:10 p.m., a man was shot in the 1300 block of 98th Avenue. He was taken to a hospital by friends and is expected to recover. The motive was not known.

And at 11:33 p.m., a man with a neck wound was

brought to a hospital by friends. He had been shot a short time earlier at 107th Avenue and Meyers Street and was in stable condition. A motive was not immediately known.

Homicide and burglary detectives were called to the scene on Weaver Street, where family members and neighbors gathered outside the yellow police tape blocking access to the house and one next door.

This is the city’s 33 homicide of the year.

Johns said after the shooting police crews attempted to stop a white Buick Roadmaster, but the driver did not pull over and eluded authorities. The vehicle was found abandoned 15 minutes later off Sage Ave. Johns said the owner of the car has a history of not stopping for police and so they are not sure if it is connected with the shooting on Weaver St.

Montgomery County Real Estate Records show that the home is owned by Terry Turner. Neighbors and a woman who said she was the victim’s sister identified the man killed by another name.

Richmond CA is at 33

A 14-year-old found dead near train tracks Friday night in Richmond left his brother's house on foot the after receiving a phone call, police said Monday.

Someone shot and killed Kevin Berrera out in the open on a well-trampled shortcut between North Richmond and San Pablo's Rumrill Boulevard, Detective Sgt. Lori Curran said. A passer-by found him about 7 a.m. Saturday.

Police seek leads in the case.

"The body was about 100 or 150 yards from the nearest habitation," Curran said. "But it was out in the open nothing was done to conceal it."

Berrera, who was familiar to officers who work in the Shields-Reid neighborhood, spent Friday night visiting his brother at a home in North Richmond. A phone call — police don't know from whom or its nature — prompted him to leave on foot before midnight.

Forensic investigators peg the time of death between midnight and 2 a.m. Berrera probably died where the passer-by found him, police said, on a path used by locals over Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks.

Berrera became the fourth homicide victim found this year in the area between North Richmond and San Pablo; the bodies of two women appeared there in February, and someone found a man shot inside a car there in May. Police made arrests in two of those cases, and none seem related, detectives said.

Berrera became Richmond's 33rd homicide victim of 2009. At this time last year, police had investigated 21 killings.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Anchorage reached a sobering milestone this week: there have already been more homicides this year than all of last year.

So far there have been 13 murders, and that number could rise in the coming months.

Officer Carla Culbreth is often one of the first on scene to murders.

"You're mainly concerned about getting to the area, getting to the victim, making sure that the scene is secure," she said.

She's been to quite a few. She started at the Anchorage Police Department back in 1989. The Anchorage population was about 187,000, and there were 11 homicides that year.

About 91,000 people and 20 years later, and the number for 2009 so far stands at 13 and counting.

"I've never been able to in 19 years, tried to figure out the rhyme or reason why more one year versus the next year," Culbreth said.

The first came just two days into the New Year at an apartment building in Mountain View. Later that month an afternoon murder and attempted suicide in a strip mall parking lot.

And then in February a double homicide in the middle of a Russian Jack neighborhood.

But perhaps the boldest shooting happened in June in the busy Sports Authority parking lot on Dimond Boulevard.

Police say they don't have a reason why homicides are increasing this year, but last year's figure of 12 was a seven-year low.

"All we first responders know is we have to get there and we have to handle each and every call to the best of our ability, so I don't always pay attention to the numbers," Culbreth said.

She knows to expect another call at any time, and when she does, she'll be ready.

"That's just one of the portions of the job that we have to unfortunately deal with," Culbreth said.

OAKLAND — A man was killed and two teenage boys wounded Tuesday night in a shooting behind an East Oakland recreation center, police said.

Police have not ruled out the possibility the shooting was gang-related, said Officer Jason Andersen, the lead investigator in the case.

The man killed appeared to be a 22-year-old Oakland resident, police said. His name was not released pending notification of relatives.

The names of the two teenagers, 13 and 15, both of Oakland, were not released. They were in local hospitals Wednesday morning and expected to recover.

The shooting happened about 9:45 p.m. behind the Rainbow Recreation Center at 5800 International Blvd., police said.

The center was closed when the shooting happened. The three shooting victims and some other men were standing just inside the rear entrance to the field portion of the complex talking when multiple gunmen walked up and began shooting, Andersen said.

"Nothing was said. They just started shooting," Andersen said. The suspects ran away, and police were seeking them Wednesday, he added.

The man was hit several times and pronounced dead at the scene. The teenagers were each also hit more than once. No one else was injured.

The killing was Oakland's 67th homicide of the year. Last year at this time there were 86 homicides

Algiers shooting in alley off Tullis Drive proves fatal
by Leslie Williams, The Times-Picayune
Wednesday August 19, 2009, 10:50 PM

One man was shot dead Wednesday evening in Algiers and another man was shot in the groin earlier in the day in the city's 6th Ward.

A man in his mid-20s was shot several times about 6:40 p.m. in an alley in the 5700 block of Tullis Drive, authorities said.

The man, whose identity is being withheld until next of kin are notified, died later at a local hospital, said John Gagliano, chief investigator for the Orleans Parish coroner's office.

Police have no motive for the killing and no suspects, officer Jonette Williams said.

In the 6th Ward, a man was shot in the groin in the 900 block of North Miro Street, Williams said. He was taken to a local hospital. His condition was not available Wednesday night.

Police have neither a motive nor a suspect in that shooting as well, she said.

Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to call Crimestoppers at 504.822.1111 or toll-free at 1.877.903.7867. Callers do not have to give their names or testify and can earn as much as $2,500 for tips that lead to an indictment.

August 20: Chicago saw its second double homicide case of the month last week, according to a RedEye analysis of preliminary police information.

Two men in their 20s were shot to death in the South Shore neighborhood on Aug. 13. A couple was shot to death five days earlier in Roseland.

Prior to that, the last double homicide case was July 5, when two men were shot to death in Woodlawn. There have been 11 double homicide cases so far this year, and one triple homicide case (three teenagers shot to death in South Chicago in February), RedEye found.

There were 18 homicide cases with multiple victims in 2008, a police spokeswoman told RedEye earlier this year.

This month, 33 homicides have been recorded. Chicago police logged 49 murders in August 2008

Thanks. I've added it. The shooter did not live in East Austin by the way. He lived in Round Rock, thats where they arrested him. Apparently a car pulled up in front of a house and a man who lived there walked up to the car thinking he recognized an acquaintance, but soon realized he didn't. Someone in the car then shot the man at point blank. I've noticed a definite uptick in crime this year from the suburbs, either crimes happening in those areas, or the criminals in violence inside of Austin coming from the suburbs. Out of 14 murders this year in Austin, this was only the 2nd for East Austin.

Montreal is at 20.

Dayton is now at 35

DAYTON - The 32-year-old man shot and killed in his apartment late Thursday, Aug. 20, has been identified by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office as Benjamin Gulley.

Gulley was inside Apartment 11 of the Wilmington-Bellaire complex, 929 Wilmington Ave., where witnesses said at least three men fled and jumped into a green Cadillac about 11:30 p.m.

Officers arrived about five minutes later to find Gulley on the floor dead from a gunshot wound, Lt. John Bardun said.

Gulley is the city’s fourth homicide victim in six days of gun violence that has left two other men hospitalized. You can check on those homicides by clicking here.

Since last Saturday, Dayton officers have responded to at least nine shootings, five of which are being investigated by homicide detectives. No arrests have been made in any of those shootings.

Gulley’s death comes eight months after he was arrested by police for possession of heroin.

In that instance, Gulley was walking from an apartment at 32 Utah Court and was stopped by police investigating reports of drug activity at the apartment, according to a police report.

Gulley resisted when officers tried to arrest him and had to be pepper sprayed after he tried to punch and flee from officers, the report stated. He was convicted of heroin possession in March and received five years community control, court records show.

Witnesses said the complex where Gulley was killed has been a peaceful area for many years, but in the last two months have seen a lot of foot traffic in the apartment where Gulley lived.

Bardun said Gulley was not the renter of the apartment but coroner’s officials said that was his last known address.

Oakland is now at 68 down from 88 at the same time last year

OAKLAND — A 14-year-old boy walking with friends Friday night was shot to death by a gunman who singled him out from others in the group, police said.

Police said they don't know why the killer targeted Ricardo Cortez Jr. from the rest of the several young people he was with. "He just walked up to him and shot him," homicide Sgt. Sean Fleming said today.

"It's terrible," Fleming said. "He was just a young child hanging out with his friends."

The shooting happened about 8:45 p.m. Friday in the 1700 block of 47th Avenue not far from where Ricardo, an only child, lived with his parents. Ricardo was pronounced dead at Highland Hospital at 9:25 p.m.

No one else was injured.

Fleming said no one could tell police why Ricardo was the only one shot.

Police said relatives told them Ricardo, who would have turned 15 next month, liked sports, especially soccer, and would have been a sophomore at Far West School this semester.

Fleming said police were told Ricardo was a "good kid who never gave his parents any problems. He was very popular.

"This is a very senseless killing," Fleming said. "His parents are just devastated."

The killing was Oakland's 68th homicide of the year. Last year at this time there had been 88 homicides in the city

Pittsburgh is now at 27 YTD, following the shooting death this afternoon of a women visiting family in the city's St. Clair Village housing complex. The city's announcement earlier this summer that it plans to close the complex for good has been met by strong opposition from remaining residents, who believe their children will become targets of violence if forced to move into the surrounding neighborhoods. Sad situation no matter the outcome. Overall, the summer has been much better than last year, as murders remain down from 43 at this point in 2008.

Louisville is now at 44 and there has been 2 triple shootings in less than 24 hours they always have a quiet period every month and then it randomly gets real bad real quick

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Three teenagers were shot Monday morning at a home in west Louisville, and one of them died at the hospital.

The shooting happened just before 5 a.m. Monday near South 36th Street and Hale Avenue.

Police said seven people were inside a home when someone shot several rounds from an assault weapon.

A 14-year-old was shot in the head and was in critical condition as of 7 a.m. Monday. A 19-year-old and an 18-year-old were also shot. Officers said the 14-year-old and 19-year-old are brothers.

Lajuan Smith, 18, was pronounced dead at 8:55 a.m. The coroner listed the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators at the scene of the shooting said they have a suspect and hope to make an arrest soon.

Officers believe the shooting was the result of an ongoing family dispute.

"I was shocked. I was shocked to see that he was dead and I was, like, 'Why him?'" Smith's friend Aprila Adams said.

Police said Smith was not related to anyone at this home, but he did live here.

"He's gone and I can't even put words together. It's crazy," family friend Howard Wright said.

Friends said Smith worked at a restaurant in Louisville. He had one child and was expecting another.

"It's crazy. He didn't even get to live 18 years. I'm 18, myself. Everybody has got to go one day, but it wasn't for him. Bullets ain't got no names or nothing," Wright said.

Police also said the 14-year-old is in critical condition and the 19-year-old in serious condition.

UPDATE: Police are still searching for a suspect. San Marcos Police Cmdr. Terry Nichols said investigators believe one of the men involved in the earlier altercation was the shooter. They also believe that person knew Burse, Nichols said.
San Marcos police say 30-year-old Byron Burse was shot to death early this morning by an unidentified man who kicked in the door to Burse’s apartment and shot him numerous times before fleeing.

Thanks. I've added them to the chart and map. That was the first murder for San Marcos in a year and a half. I'm also going to go ahead and add that one from Dripping Springs where the two people were found dead in a house. It sounds like it was a murder suicide. That will add one to the metro number.

So...

| 2009 Austin Murders | City 15 | County 19 | Metro 30 |

That's also two murders now for Hays County this year. Caldwell County is now the only county in the metro without a murder this year. So the tally is, (including Austin's numbers) - | Travis 19 | Williamson 7 | Bastrop 2 | Hays 2 | Caldwell 0 |

Minneapolis is at 10 now with the possibility that it may be at 11.

An infant found dead in July has turned into murder charges for the father. A suspicious fire killed one and is being investigated as a homicide, this story was posted in mid-August with no new details since.

I will post links later but the Star Tribune website is very slow right now.

Yeah, if things keep going this way it'll be the lowest murder rate SF has had since at least 1985 (the farthest back i can find murder stats). As for what's caused it...the SFPD credits their "zone strategy" that they adopted in late 2008, in which they concentrate their resources in the most violent neighborhoods...but honestly that sounds exactly like what they've always done. Personally i chalk it up in large part to chance. Oakland is down significantly from last year too. Richmond however, is up.

I was on vacation all last week so this update is for two weeks. I went to Pittsburgh, Detroit, Toronto, and Buffalo. Although I guess I didn't venture far outside the downtown part of Detroit, I actually felt safer there than I do sometimes in Baltimore, and safer than I felt in parts of Buffalo. The only real crime I witnessed was a street brawl right on the main commercial drag of a nice yuppified neighborhood on Pittsburgh's south side! Toronto, of course, was all around lovely.

Slain Midtown Hotel owner worked hard to run a 'respectable' hotel
by Ramon Antonio Vargas, The Times-Picayune
Monday August 31, 2009, 1:55 PM

Philip Chacko, 67, a Mid-City hotel owner known for confronting anybody who tried to use his rooms for prostitution or drug peddling, was shot to death inside his hotel Sunday night, authorities said.

Chacko, who owned and lived at the Midtown Hotel in the 3900 block of Tulane Avenue, died after a man barged into his hotel lobby and aimed a pistol at him Sunday about 9:40 p.m., the New Orleans Police Department said.

The man fired. One bullet struck Chacko in the chest. The gunman ran back out of the hotel and fled, police said.

Officers responding to a 911 call about the shooting found Chacko alive, lying on the lobby floor. Officers summoned New Orleans EMS paramedics to the scene, and they rushed the Chacko to LSU Interim Public Hospital, spokesman Jeb Tate said.

Chacko died shortly after making it to the emergency room, chief coroner's investigator John Gagliano said.

Chacko bought the four-story, 102-room hotel formerly known as the Quality Inn Midtown in February 2007 for $1.5 million. Public records show he had lived in cities in New York and Florida, where he also owned hotels before selling them, said Mike Miller, a UNITY of Greater New Orleans homeless outreach worker who worked with Chacko.

Chacko left a mark locally when he aided a huge push to clear large homeless encampments that had popped up throughout the city and move those people to more permanent housing.

During 2007 and 2008, city officials ordered that encampments set up in Duncan Plaza, just across from City Hall, and under an elevated stretch of Claiborne Avenue near Canal Street be cleared. Outreach workers scrambled to find hotels to house the tent cities' squatters, some of whom were very sick, as agencies worked to secure them more permanent housing.

Chacko opened his Midtown Hotel to some of the most ill and disabled members of the homeless population, said Angela Patterson, head of UNITY's outreach team. He hosted up to 100 homeless people at the height of the push, Miller said.

"Many hotel owners and managers around town didn't want to take that chance," Patterson said. "But he took it."

Miller said, "He was a great asset to the social service community."

It is during that time that Miller noticed how strict Chacko was with his guests. Chacko vocally confronted anyone he suspected of trying to use his cheaply priced rooms for sleaziness such as drug dealing, drug using or sex for pay.

"It was a low-cost hotel, but he wanted order. He wanted it to be respectable," Patterson said.

He apparently succeded. Several users of hotel rating Web sites wrote favorable reviews while the place was under his ownership. Many users said they had as satisfactory an experience as they could expect at an economy hotel in a rundown part of town.

Several groups also held meetings in the conference rooms there.

Miller said Chacko managed the hotel with his wife, Mary. The couple seemingly worked "Monday to Monday" and personally handled many aspects of the business together -- including managing the front desk and cleaning the rooms, Patterson said.

Miller said, "All he did was work."
