I went to a popular viewing area just near the touchdown point on Runway 16/34 at Calgary International Airport (YYC) today to watch the planes take off and land and snapped a few shots.

Didn't have as much luck as I'd hoped for, because my battery was close to dead (damn it) so a few pictures, especially of the KE bird, didn't turn out as well as I'd have liked. Still, a great viewpoint and some great birds today. :)

I didn't know that Calgary had a direct flight to Seoul. Nice shots.

Nope, we don't. That's just a 3x weekly summer charter for Korean tourists.

Hopefully we'll get a direct scheduled flight to somewhere in Asia (my guess is Hong Kong and/or Tokyo) within the next year or two though.

Great pics Chemist! I love seeing 777's coming into Calgary regularly now! Too bad you couldn't get a shot of the BA arrival as well.

Now with Emirates coming to visit in September things could really get interesting for us in YYC!

Hey Chemist, Nice shots. I love the AA MD-83. How old is that bird?
I'm no clever enough to figure out where that is exactly, so can you give me directions? I'd love to take my gear out there for some photos.
Bigtime, you obviously know as well...

Hey Arriviste, that spotting location is the one right by the Mohawk gas station. It is west of the runway and has a bunch of signange and information that the airport authority has put there for people.

Simply put, McKnight Blvd. and turn right(if westbound) or left(if eastbound) right by the Mohawk, can't miss it.

However another good spot is by the Shell aerocenter on the west side as well, the Canada customs shack is just north of it and there is an area there with a couple of tables. This spot puts you right at the touchdown point for runway 34, however you would need a ladder to shoot over the fence.

Here is a link to a great photo site complete with spotting for Calgary and other airports:

Cheers!

Awesome site!!

Yeah those guys have their stuff together tight!

Whenever they post on the 'Trip Reports' section on airliners.net you know you are going to see some great shots, video, and actual intelligent commentary on the airline they used for the trip!

Probably as old as I am if not older (26). I thought the 777s landing and the A330 taking off were loud - and then that thing took off. Holy shit, it sounded like the end of the world. :D And it left a trail of brown smoke behind it - by far the dirtiest plane I saw taking off that day.

They're not too bad to fly in though - the 2 3 seating is odd, but they're a lot quieter inside than they are outside, thank god.

Make your ears pop too! Ride in the back of them and you'll feel like your head will explode on take off. LOL!!

Great shots! That Air Canada 777 shot is of special importance because there is only one in the fleet so far if I am not mistaken. I don't think they have taken delivery on the second one yet. Nice catch!

I didn't realize Calgary got so many widebodies.

Actually I believe AC has at least 2 of the 77W's now, I believe they took delivery last week of their second 772LR also.

Yeah Calgary doesn't do too bad in the widebody departement, summer charters bring in a lot of the A330's and 767's. Throw in AC with the 2x LHR in the summer, 1x FRA, BA from LHR 1x, the Korean and JAL charters and cargo arrivals(Cargolux and Asiana) and we do tend to punch above our weight!

I'm pretty sure there's at least 4 777s in AC's fleet by this stage. That one was fin number 735, and I know the first 777 was fin 731. I think they've got 3 773s and 1 772LR delivered now, or something like that. This one is flying YYC-LHR for August only, and then that route will be back to being served by an A330.

Calgary's gettting more widebodies now than they have in a while, but still not as many as I'd like to see. The most common widebodies we see here are 767s and A330s. The only scheduled service we have that'll always be a 777 is the BA YYC-LHR flight, but that's only 5x weekly. And we don't have any scheduled 747 or A340 flights, so it's pretty rare to see quads here :(.

Great captures Chemist ;) Nice to see a KE 772 there...never would have expected that one, though KE 777 charters get all over the place to out of the way airports. Seen pictures of them in Faro, Prague, Chorfu, and Saipan of all places. I'll be on a KE 772 NGO-ICN-SFO in a month ;)

Incidentally, the US express CRJ is a -900.

BA is 6x per week now
I think there are 5 77W and 2 77L, now
They get delivered often (2/month) so it is hard to keep track

Well as for regular quads we do get the scheduled Cargolux and Asiana 747's in. But unless there is a delay they tend to be late night/early morning arrival and departures.

I should have been more clear in my other post, I was just mentioning the frequencies on a single day in the summer, not for the entire week.

Anyone heard if BA will go to 7x weekly eventually?

It should be interesting to see if AC will bring the 77W back on the LHR route, I thought they main reason they had it here was to offer a comparable product to BA. Perhaps when more frames are in the fleet we'll see it.

Now with Emirates coming to visit in September things could really get interesting for us in YYC!

Emirates is coming for a visit? Wow, I didn't know about that. Even though we're the Energy Capital of Canada, I can't really see us getting a direct connection to the Middle East.
