View Full Version : Shangri-La getting a 62nd Floor!!!

Shangri-La is getting a 62nd floor! I spoke to one of the construction people outside the tower this afternoon and he said the tower will now be 62 floors.

I'm not sure of the details. I know they had applied and were granted a 61st floor but this 62nd floor is news to me, but great news!

Has the overall height jumped from 646 feet to 660 feet or so? Can they make it 700 feet? Can we bump it up 3 more floors to make it on par with Toronto?

I would like to hear details on this 62nd floor (how it was approved so secretly) and the overall height increase.

This is good news. The taller this building, the better, because when it does top out, it will not look that much taller than One Wall Centre (which is situated on the highest elevation in downtown).

Maybe the construction worker doesn't know what he's talking about...

I never understood this claim. Can someone clear this up for me? If you walk west on Nelson or Comox from the Wall Centre, you are clearly walking uphill. Therefore, the Wall Centre cannot be on the highest elevation in downtown. I would place the highest downtown elevation on Bute between Nelson and Comox. Everyone agree?

I think the highest point is in the park.
The construction worker is mistaken, they added 1 floor, and there is no more additions. You can't just add a floor secretly there are proper channels to follow, just like they did last time. There is still a surprise in store but it won't be height.;) I figured it would've been announced by now but you'll all have to wait.

The highest point in downtown Vancouver is indeed the park across from St. Pauls at 163 feet. The difference in elevation above sea level of Wall Center vs. Shangri-La is 20 feet.

The worker I spoke to (he wore orange coveralls) is actually is one of the traffic people who coordinates truck arrivals in front of the site and directs traffic. He also said there will be a "Floor Party" in October to celebrate something, I suppose the moment it surpasses Wall Center in height.

No I really think he's onto something; sounds like there will be 62 floors. He seems to know what he's talking about. He's not just any guy on the site.

62 storeys = 60 real storeys (no 4 or 13)

I'd love for them to increase the height to break that elusive 200 metre mark but that is just the building nerd in me talking. I am not going to hold my breath though.

There's no indication that City approvals have been obtained for an additional floor.

On top of that, when the 61st floor was added, the City required that it be added within the same building height (to the top of the fins) as previously approved (maybe an extra 6 ft was added for the mech penthouse) - so it is highly unlikely that the City would endorse an additional floor that would take the height of the fins higher than the height approved to date.

... maybe they're trying to get it through while all the staff are on strike..... (kidding)

There is still a surprise in store but it won't be height.;) I figured it would've been announced by now but you'll all have to wait.

Whadya have to say that for? No there'll be another round of speculation.... :)

Wow sounds like on-site upper management to me. Directing traffic...he is certainly not just any guy. He is practically running the show down there.

We'll definitely have to wait to see if this can be verified. There is always a good chance that he was talking about the original floor addition and is just confused about floor numbering. Would be nice to hit 200m for sure though.

As for the extra surprise jlousa is talking about, I don't understand what this could possibly be but I really hope it is something unique and can be enjoyed by all.

^Yes, the Drake will actually manage the hotel (they have closed, after all). The urban fare will be replaced by the world-famous drake show lounge...

And yes, it will be enjoyed by all....

Yeah I know, the "orange coveralls" were the highlight for me.

I want that special surprise to be that the Chi Spa inside Shangri-La will offer the same services as Madame Cleos and Swedish Touch
