Some of the signage would be cool in Dundas Square for sure.

I like the Peugeot sign.

Cairo's pretty crazy in its own good way. A market like Khan-al-Khalili in Ottawa would do wonders.

No.

As said in the video below, "everything in this world exists in Africa". That includes the cities above AND extreme poverty.

Fair enough, and thank the Good Lord we only have one Calgary; who could stand more? ;)

I wouldn't mind another Calgary. There egos could go head to head, and the end result? No man standing, and less lights to go through when heading west to banff from eastern canada (will save you about 40-60 mins off your trip!)

Toronto already looks like Joburg in parts. Lots of 60-70's slabs. Infact I saw a pic once of the Bay Street corridor in Toronto, and it looked almost idenical to a picture of the Joburg CBD.

There are some aspects of African cities that Canadian cities could benefit from incorporating.

We could sure use some nice warm beaches with big waves like Durban has. One of the best things about living in Durban is being able to go surfing for a couple hours early in the morning before going to work (and you can do this year round!)

yeah the CBD is quite similiar

Joburg has one of the worlds largest amount of art deco buildings still around

joburg has a whole is a lot like LA - very spread out and car dependant

also did you know that the Toronto City hall and Durban City hall had its plans messed up and the ones for Durban were sent to Toronto and vice versa and the city hall in toronto apparently collapsed after a year because it was not designed to take the snow load - but the one in Durban is still standing and i assume able to handle the snow :haha:

Hum I guess this is the best place to ask this :

Why is the "Arabian" thread closed??
I think it is as relevant as the American, European, and African ones, as long as "Arabian" extended to middle-eastern.

When is someone going to start the thread "Do you wish Canadian Cities were just a little more like Antarctica?
Since there is one about Africa, it means there must be one about Antarctica? :uhh:

in that last picture i stayed in that hotel on the right - i had a nice big room - it had like two bedrooms and it was only $50 Canadian for a saturday night which included a great breakfast buffet :P

it also came with an armed guard or two after dark

I don't know what is so great about Pretoria/Johannesburg. Isn't it just one massive suburbanized mess? Practically no mass transit and gated communities taken to the extreme. Well, maybe that has changed.

SpongeG
08-27-2007, 12:30 AM
they are building the gautrain

its not a mess - it was well laid out - they have a great freeway system - with ring roads etc. mostly for the days of apartheid so the army etc could get to trouble spots quickly

they do have busses but its not run ofr long - i think service ends around 6-7 pm due to crime

i am not sure if its still going on but metro bus service was shut down completely earlier this year due to some bus drivers being murdered and the rest of the drivers refused to work

its still working on the crime

It's not by Calatrava. The architect is Paul Ove Jensen.

More like a shanty town suburb of Jo'burg. I'm sure the government of South Africa is moving fast to improve the housing in this area.

Or at least as fast as the Canadian gov't is moving to improve Native housing in the north and far north of Canada. (Especially Ontario)

I guess in that case Canada and Africa are a little bit the same, but in a bad way.

S_B_Russell

I just spent 3 weeks in South Africa. It's an amazing place to visit (frankly, I would move there if there were more jobs). The country as a whole has a lot of problems it needs to continue to tackle, but there is definitely a palpable energy in the air that SA is on its way up.

I have no doubt they are improving the place, and I don't mean to belittle present efforts as South Africa is saddled with a difficult history, but it sounds like their only real past "achievement" was very efficient racial segregation. Is that what it has to offer Canadian cities? It sounds like South African cities are wishing they were a little more Canadian (Well, Johannesburg anyway).
