The Landmarks Commission has something on the agenda for Sept. 24 that looks like it could be a modified version of the old Apple Store concept from a year ago. Anyone know anything about it?

Design approved for site

The controversial property at 437 N.W. 23rd Ave. finally may have found a future. Last week the Northwest District Association planning committee approved a design for a two-story building with retail shops on the first floor and offices on the second.

Last year, the property’s owner had proposed building an Apple computer store on the site, but a design could not be agreed upon by neighborhood association representatives and the city’s design commission.

The current proposal would include demolishing the current building and erecting a modern-looking brick structure. No potential tenants for the building have been named.

John Bradley, chairman of the neighborhood association planning committee, said the new design includes an awning over the building’s front door and large windows on the building’s north side, which fronts Northwest Glisan Street.

Both were issues of contention with the proposed Apple building.

Same location, but I don't think Apple is going to move in there. Not sure tho.

That is one very long and extensive application!

And color elevations to boot.

No Apple for sure...this was at landmarks yesterday. I've got a bit about it here (http://www.djcoregon.com/articleDetail.htm/2007/09/25/Design-approved-for-site-formerly-known-as-Apple-Historic-Landmarks-Commission-approves-new-Holst-de)on djcOregon.com.

^nice write up Alison on the skylab building. Did you get any sense from them on how probable that building is, especially considering it is a condo tower in a saturated market?

Thanks, Mark. And, not really...what I mostly got was the sense that it's still early, and they're rolling some really innovative things into the building, and still knocking out how a lot of them are actually going to work.

But from what Jeff Kovel was saying, he's very tuned in to how the project fits into -- and kind of bursts out of, in terms of design and location -- the existing market. He said there's nothing like it in Portland, which is what all developers say, but in this particular instance I think it's true. It was a badass presentation.

^thanks! I do hope that project is a go, it has moved to the top of my list of projects I'd like to see built, right next to Bside6.
