It would be better if it was an infinity pool that gave the illusion of swimming off the building and in to the ocean :P

So yeah, that ruins it for me. And here I was with a check for $20 or so million, ahh well. :D

Across the street is 745 thrulow st, that parkade will be a 300' office tower managed by Bentall in the not very distant future.

An update on the tower crane: I was told it'll likely be removed next month. It will be dismantled by a derrick crane which will lower it down. Then a smaller derrick crane will be brought up to hoist the first derrick crane down. That third derrick crane is small enough that it will be dismantled and taken down the elevator. No helicopters required.;)

I can't beleive anyone would be stupid enough to think it would come down via helicopter. :koko:

Well, I believed it. Helicopters are used extensively in the construction industry, like moving HVACs to roof tops, moving materials, transmission tower construction, cell phone towers etc, etc. I believe a helicopter was used to mount the "W" sign on the old Woodwards building. The CN Tower was partially built by helicopter. There are many more instances.
So it not so "unbelievably stupid" to think that they may have used a helicopter.

I think the difference is putting things on TOP vs. taking things from the side of a building.

If you're placing something on top and you have a gust of wind... so what... you just wait a minute until it calms down... from the side... uh oh. There goes the building facade.

I didn't think it was that ridiculous either that the crane atop Shangri-la would be moved off by helicopter.....but then again, where are his sources?

towerguy3
Jun 11, 2008, 1:55 AM
Seriously, there's no way a series of cranes can dismantle an overhead crane and lower it down piece by piece without having the last piece or the last crane sitting up there waiting to be taken down with the help of a helicopter.

At some point, there will be one large last piece left up there with no other crane to lower it down. That last crane will need another crane to lift it down. You have to get the last piece off somehow. Think about it.

jlousa
Jun 11, 2008, 2:26 AM
I'm sure if you use google you'll be able to find countless videos of cranes being dismantled w/o helicopters. As a bonus you'll probably see lots of people in orange vests.

The temporary derrick crane is erected on top of the tower and is used to lower the pieces of the construction crane from the top of the tower. This was done for One Wall Centre.

http://www.shangri-la.com/uploadedImages/property/Vancouver/rooms_suites/slv_rs.jpg

"The guestrooms, averaging 550 square feet (approximately 55 square meters), will be among the largest in Canada. The guestrooms will incorporate three components to deliver a suite-type concept: oversized bathrooms, bedrooms, and living/working areas. In addition, the full array of Shangri-La services and facilities include 24-hour room service, same day laundry and valet service, 40”flat panel LCD television in living room with DVD player plus ipod/MP3 connections, LCD TV in bathroom and wired and wireless Internet service. Great pics SFU. Vancouver will be showing off its downtown core in 2010 with this grand piece of architecture.

Thanks for the pis - looks like the scaffolding is down within the lowest of the three double height suites (the box that pokes out).
Any reason why the lowest one looks to have more reflective glass than the two above? I guess it ould be a coating applied to the inside of the glass?

That would be pretty cool....like how there were fireworks shooting off at Brockton Point when that new cruise ship was christianized in the city.....

LOL I think you mean christened... Its not a religious conversion!

No, that's what I meant. :p The fountain/waterfall place will be filled with holy water, and it'll be used for baptizing the rich and famous.

It's not anything iconic, but it's a beautiful clean design and will look good for years to come.

How much will the monthly strata / maintenance fees likely to be for the owners?

$ 2000 / month? Look at it this way. What if the Hotel starts doing poorly financially and starts losing money? Strata fees may go up.

With a mixed Hotel / Condo project like this, the owners very much help to subsidize the Hotel if the Hotel does not perform well financially.

The hotel is not entirely subsidized by the owners, but if Shangri-La Hotel doesn't do well financially, I can't see the monthly strata fees for the owners necessarily going down.

In the unlikely event the hotel goes under, they can sell it and re-model the hotel floors and become the nicest Holiday Inn in the World :P

As for strata fees, I have heard they are going to be in the region of 35 - 40 cents per square foot.

I don't think thats something anyone has to be worried about. Shangri-La is a large company and any risk is offset by offset by the fact that it performs extremely well in other markets, therefore these earnings would subsidize the hotel in the case that it does fair poorly. That is very unlikely to happen anyway.

Yeah. If anything more people will COME to Vancouver because there is a Shangri-La. There are a lot of brand loyalists, especially in Asia, who will go wherever their favorite hotel chain goes. Same goes for Ritz Carlton, people will come to the city just to stay in the Ritz Carlton. So both of these buildings bode well for the future of Vancouver tourism... especially by the type who are going to spend a lot of money :P

is the pool of the 4th or 5th floor an outdoor pool or indoor pool?

Yume-sama

Outdoor heated pool to be open year round. I'd assume they would put a canopy of some sort over it in the rainy seasons...

:P Nobody wants to get wet by *that* type of water! Least of all the people staying at the Shangri-La ;)

There won't be a canopy, just like there isn't at Pan Pacific or the Fairmont waterfront pools.
When it's raining people just don't use the pools. Pretty amazing concept.

Well, that's silly. I guess they thought it'd be tacky to install one of those automatic roll-out ones you see on TV that can roll out of your trailer...

Yeah they really need to put some signage up on the Capitol site. It's quite a nice building, really. Why no love from the marketers... other than the fact it sold out in the first few weeks. :P
