"When the Shangri-La is completed later this year it will stand 201 metres tall and consist of 62 stories, making it the tallest buidling in Vancouver and the ninth tallest building in Canada. The first 15 floors will be occupied by the Shangri-La hotel with condos taking up the remaining floors. Perhaps you're unfamiliar with what constitutes an article, my pre-pubescent friend, but that is not an article.

Ok, first, no name-calling and direct insults are tolerated under new rules that went into effect on the forum about 2 months back - that even goes for the use of such childish slurs as "idiot" and "pre-pubescent". The webmaster (Dylan Leblanc) is trying to class this place up... good luck...
Second, just because a journalist states a "fact", doesn't mean it is actually a fact. If you're trying to prove a point that has already been argued to death, please cite a more reliable source or don't say anything at all - otherwise it will only lead to unhappiness for us all. :(
And third, lets all try to give towerguy a bit of a break. He may or may not deserve one but either way he was not trying to insult anybody so lets try not to jump down his throat all the time. If you would like to prove him wrong, please resort to posting the appropriate facts (with links, ideally) or try to just ignore him. If towerguy is completely out of line then please contact a mod and we'll deal with him as we see fit.
Thank you.
And ditto to what deasine said above.

It really wouldn't suprise me if said journalists source was either towerguy or one of his posts. If media are to use this site as reference, which I know they have in the past, might aswell soon-feed them the right information. you know how screwed up shit can get when a journalist has two conflicting pieces of information.
As said in the past, this has been debated ad-nausium, aswell as many other towerguy related arguments. One of which ended in Jlousa being owed a steak. Posting the same responses to the same stupiditiy over and over again seems fruitless now.
And if Dylan is trying to clean up the site (god bless him for trying), then not only should he focus oncleaning it up visually by disallowing curse words, but he should als clamp down on the posting of false information. I feel that being the credit of false infrmation is far more damning and damaging to this site's reputation than the F-word is any day.

I would enjoy living there if I was given the chance. The height doesn't bother me. The worst thing would happen is if I lean on the railing of the balcony and it collapse and I would be free falling over 600ft down for about 6 seconds and would have the best view of downtown until I hit the ground and become a crushed tomato. :D

I am thinking based on what was said earlier about the crane not going to be visible that maybe they might be putting up false walls that fold down to hide this ugly crane, and fold down when in use. I was also thinking this because from some of the drawings we have seen in the past the core looks higher than the glass panels on the outside. Which it doesn't look like now, but may be an optical illusion:shrug: Any insite on if we are going to be looking at the crane as the tallest point of our skyline or not?

I'm not sure, but the external elevators will probably be there a while longer. When I was on site about a month ago, the high-rise elevators weren't functional yet, so they still need the exterior jump elevators to take up people, drywall, etc.

Jul 17, 2008, 5:34 PM
Here's my guess of how it works:
If you look at the base of the crane in the Vancouver Sun picture you'll notice there's an open area there that I think the long arm of the crane drops vertically down in to.
Vancouver Sun picture:
http://media.canada.com/gallery/Shang/Sun0907n%20Shangi2.jpg
The picture is a bit misleading because it looks distorted from a wide angle lense, but I think that the section that holds the counter-weight retracts right up to the base. You can see how the counter-weight has a notch in it in this picture from SFUVancouver...
SFUVancouver's picture:
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/3850/shangrilafromlookout2jurc3.jpg
What I can't figure out from these pictures is if it swivels at the base to drop the crane in or if it bends where the arm meets the base. You can see that there's a notched out part where the arm and base meet but it looks like that whole section is completely welded to the base.
Looks cool. I'll be interested to see how it actually all works.
officedweller
Jul 17, 2008, 7:18 PM
Yeah, there are a lot of bolts at the base, so it'll be interesting to see how it retarcts, moves, swivels, etc.

You mean the one BMW 750, that's now advertising Shangri-la Toronto which happens to be the same car the developer used during the Fairmont Pacific Rim sales drive? Nope never seen it. :koko:
Rennie's old car before the Bentley he has now was a 750.. maybe he's 'leased' or loaned it to his company. :)
Ron.

Could be Ron. I remember seeing that car beside Shaw Tower during its Fairmont days.

No but a good friend of a friend of mine did ;)
Is this thing going to have lighting effects or something? I remember speculation at the beginning that the little squares would be able to light up and maybe even form an image somehow (although I didn't really believe it at the time). That sort of thing is starting to seem completely unlikely. But does anyone know what, if any, lighting effects will it have? Or when we'll be likely to find out?

Being 10 lights wide, it would make a half-decent tetris display. The tree boxes kind of get in the way but by that point you've pretty much lost already

I'm sure there are a few people on these fourms who know what is in store regarding the solar pannels and the crown/architectural lighting... but dont you think they would have said something by now if they could? You are just going to have to be patient and wait until the news is made public.... if it makes you feel any better it should be close to christmas time when you might see it, so wont that be a nice little present?

I have to agree with you about the lighting. For sure it will be fully lighted up before Christmas.

great shots! the sail from the Melville looks attached to the roof of Escala in that last pic.
speaking of christmas and lights, i can't help but feel the LED lighting atop L'hermitage is too christmas like and it just doesn't work with the building. when they start blinking it looks particularly bad.
