Downtown Reno has really gone through a renaissance in the past few years. Many of the old hotels have been converted to condos, and downtown is really looking much better. Many people consider it a mini Las Vegas, however it is completely different. Remember this is a metro area of about 400k:

This set is from urbanblog at flickr of the River District downtown.

There are lots of Reno Fans in the Bay Area and Sacramento....myself included.

My parents just bought a place just outside of town and I plan on coming up there more frequently to see them.

Count me as one too. I've always liked Reno, although I haven't visited in over 5 years. I hoped they would somehow save the Mapes, but I guess no one came forward with the money to do the rehab. The UNR campus looks great. I've never seen it before.

Excellent find, bigd, thanks for posting these.

Quite a few examples of interesting architecture, like the city-hall

Looks better than I expected... However I feel those Georgian style college buildings seem out of place compared to the rest of the cities architecture.

I like Reno more than Las Vegas, looks there is more nature in that city, you will never see a river in LV, some snow and stuff like that. Las Vegas is freaky and more like a Hollywood setting city, not my type of anyway.

Wow, University of Nevada is amazing. A "real" looking college.

Thanks for all those shots. I drove through Reno last summer and I wasn't able to stop because I had a lot more driving to do, but I really liked what I saw of it. It seemed like a really different side of Nevada, even a lot more scenic and greener than Carson City. I was really impressed, enough to consider it for a future career move.

Good pics, but about 3 years old. As a 2nd generation Renoite I feel Reno has never looked better. We still have our fair share some seedy hotels, but we've made great strides in terms of improving the liveability/desireability of the area, particularly in downtown within the last 5 years. Once they build the new AAA Baseball Stadium downtown I fully expect this trend to continue and potentially gain more momentum. If there is one thing holding us back it's the general perception that we're nothing more than a gaming town with trailer parks on every other block. Shows like Reno 911! only reinforce that negative stereotype IMO.

Here's a link to some photos I took last year for those interested:

And another of photos I took this Summer of Reno's (Nevada's for that matter) most historic residential neighborhood:

WOW! I never realized Reno was so nice. I've never seen too many pics of the city other than the casinos and such. I'd like to go to Reno someday. And now that they have the AAA ball team coming in 2009 (Way to go Tucson fans! :hell: :hell: ) I'm sure Reno will continue to have more to offer.

Good job Reno.
