Hopefully the owners have a sense of humour and place cookbooks next to the animal cages.:)
I think it'll probably do well though as I'm having a hard time thinking of a pet store anywhere in the area that isn't a pet salon/boutique.

ya I was thinking of opening a "u bring it we fry it" place next door to the Pet Habitat.....or maybe a cart right in front of the place.....? Jlo you want to get in on this business idea? :) ;)

that location on denman can't get anything to stay it seems - people open and close within months - the rent must be sky high

i was down at morgan crossing - sitll no movement on most of the retail - banana republic factory store and gap outlet are just sitting there empty as ever, jacob seems to have some movement

some of the other things are slowly going - so much for summer 2010 openings - maybe by christmas it will have a few places to shop at - so far its not offering much

Everything is slow to open in this city. Either it's the governments fault somehow, or... just everything in this city happens at a snails pace.

And an update from yesterday, I said Chopped Leaf was in Atelier, when really it's beside Starbucks in R&R on Richards and Robson!

I peered in the windows of the retail space in my building today. All I could see were a bunch of flowers. It better not be something lame like a flower shop.

Though obviously it is months away from opening. Perhaps people are just storing flowers there :P?

I didn't know they moved! I thought there was a strange lack of homeless milling about when I went for dinner at Shanghai Bistro.

I think they moved since they weren't able to renew their lease since Bentall is waiting for all the leases to terminate so that they can make the popcorn thing.

Also I like how the retail being lost in the corner of thurlow and alberni is just moving a block down, but hopefully the homeless wont be around there since my friend lives in a building at that corner and i go there often, and i do not want to be hassled.

Hey also one little thing... thank god that Mcdonalds is closing, they have the worse service EVER, its like they try to not care about the customer, and just there bottom line.

It may have been a pre-emptive move, other tenants in the building have recently renews for 2.5 years.

Maybe long enough to get a re-design on the popcorn box :P?

well the new location if WAY more high profile (can even be seen from robson). the window space and signage at the old location was MINIMAL at best. the new location is way more airy and open and is very street visible and friendly.....plus the loading and backend areas were less than ideal I'm told at the old location.....where as the new location was almost build to suit/fit for them.

National Post reports today that TJ Maxx will be opening Marshalls stores in Canada (TJ Maxx also owns Winners stores).

Also, noticed that the Winners sign (vertical ones) on the Future Shop Building at Granville & Robson have been changed to the current black "WINNERS" font/logo. Not sure when that happened.

There is a notice in L'Hermitage for residents that the owners of Q4 in Kitsalano (Italian cuisine) will be opening a restaurant in the retail space next to the Hotel entrance (on Richards Street between the hotel / residential lobby entrance and Georgia Avenue).

I don't recall all the details at the moment, but do remember that they said it would seat about 70.

There had been speculation about that retail space in the building (which has never been occupied by anything other than a sales centre for a brief time once construction was completed). I had been told by the hotel concierge that something was close a few weeks back. But this is the first actual notice with a name attached. I believe the notice indicated it will open late summer or early autumn.

Great!! I long for the day (despite being rather low-income myself) when Vancouver has its own, (probably scaled-down) versions of Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills; Fifth Avenue; Yorkville; Kaufingerstrasse in Munich; la Croisette in Cannes .....

We already have a cosmopolitan city, but there's too much emphasis, on hot dogs, hamburgers, souvenir shops, and the like.

its a joke the way they did it - they wanted to be "fair" so they did the lottery

now we are a week away and some of the winners who got licenses don't even have carts or business plans in place  so it will be interesting to see what happens

It's amazing how much crap they sell besides vinyl / leather goods :P The NYC store on 5th avenue is *amazing*. I almost bought a $1200 cashmere shirt, I was so overcome with its softness and it was freezing outside. But then I went to Bloomingdale's and got their brand on sale for $90. Oh well. Bob Rennie makes a point of pointing out that he owns a couple of dozen Louis Vuitton suits in every colour they make, at a few grand a piece, too.

Admittedly, I am a very good customer of theirs lol - but it is all looked down upon by the Hermes people *sigh*. But $1500 for a PLAIN little wallet? Sheesh.

SpongeG Vancouver needs a lot of stores and they will all come in time :) I'm really curious as to what is going across the street from Burberry. Ultimately Alberni has the best chance of being our high end street, something W. Hastings used to be and still somewhat is with Leone, Birks, Cartier etc... still there.

What are some brands forummers would like to see in Vancouver. Me personally I'm an LV, Gucci and Burberry kind of guy (when I have money) so I'm good. But there's still a lot of luxury brands not present in Vancouver.

Yume, yep I walked into Hermes and was unimpressed with the style. The quality is there but the style isn't for me. LV FTW!

I like that list, I'd like to see places like Jack y Jones, Desigual, Wings + Horns, Polo Ralph Lauren and/or Rugby, Band of Outsiders, J.Crew, Michael Bastian, Tom Ford, some real denim boutiques.. and a retailer that actually sells good men's shoes (there are none!)

And Apple flagship (I love the Manhatten 5th Ave store, it would so work here). If we're talking dep't stores, Harrods, Saks or Daimaru would be nice.

I always find it ironic that Vancouver's high end street (Alberni) shares a name with one of the 5 worst ranked places to live in all of Canada (and the worst in 2008).

what's in a name. Surrey BC is the polar opposite of Surrey, UK.

That's SO true!! Classic!! Imagine if Reigate, Redhill, Godalming, and Virginia Water were all southern suburbs of Vancouver !!
The idea blows one's mind !! :lmao: :bowtie:

Oh my God. It was a fun gimmick during the World Cup, but this is over doing it now. I can only imagine how gross and barf-stained that turf must be by now.

What?? Remove it?? and destroy the cosmopolitan elegance that is Vancouver? In Paris that would NEVER happen!!

UNIQLO is preparing to conquer the World. Their acquisition of The Gap was step one in coming to North America~

More creative fiction  This company hasn't acquired The Gap.

:frog: Hmm. You are right. It was rumoured very strongly, and in quite a few Japanese papers. I wouldn't be surprised if it happened, eventually.

The company behind UNIQLO is very rich. They recently offered nearly $1 billion to buy Barney's New York, but were unsuccessful~

At least the Vancouver's forefathers were aiming high with names like "Surrey" and "Richmond". Good thing they didn't pick "Slough" or "Blackpool"...:haha:

Why is UNIQLO so slow to set up in Vancouver? They are missing a golden opportunity, as the Gap looks to be down for the count. But if UNIQLO doesn't get its act together, JOE (yes, the Superstore's Joe Fresh line) will own Canada as far as this market segment goes. Case in point: the new store opening on Granville Street.

actually, with patrick robinson taking over design for the gap, their stuff is more popular than ever. they've really become a place for good, trendy basics. i've never worn more gap or had more gap pieces in my wardrobe so i have no idea where you are getting the idea that they are 'going down'.

i think he has been credited with making shoppers what it is today with lots of stores and a new look etc

people in fashion circles however don't know why he is at the gap and the gap hasn't improved sales under him

I never said they were "going down"?
I'm talking about the teenagers and just observations from people watching. Not to mention I never see that many people going in the gap in metrotown.
When I was like age 3-8 I wore tons of Gap clothes till some kids started bullying me about it :haha:
Now a days, I'm more of a fan of Banana Republic.
Maybe some time i'll have to go in the gap to see for myself.

the poster before you mentioned something about "down for the count". you do realize that BR is part of the gap right?

I think that Gap is still wearable because they have moved far away from having Gap on their clothes. That was the one major change coming into the new decade, if you were going to be conspicuous about branding, it had to be a more expensive label and gap was just too pedestrian.

patrick robinson has experience at Perry Ellis and Armani and the gap is setting itself up as a rival to J. Crew and surrendering it's lost market to Zara and H&M.

I find it a perfect stores for the everyday basics and i'm still really into their denim. it's affordable and the designer lines are of a really high quality.

Yes, I know BR is part of the Gap inc, thats why I said I prefer BR over the gap.
Thats why at the end I said sometime I should go into the Gap, to check out their new style.

Japan's Uniqlo clothing chain looks like losing steam

The operator of Japanese cheap chic clothing chain Uniqlo on Thursday slashed its annual earnings forecast as third-quarter revenue fell, the first sign that the retailer may be losing steam.

"We weren't able to communicate about our products to our customers directly," said chief financial officer Hidetsugu Onishi, adding that too many products made it difficult for clients to find what they were looking for.

"Customers want to be told which products are the most popular. If there are too many choices, psychology makes it that human beings can't decide."

Maybe this is why it's so popular in Japan and wouldn't do so well here.

That one sentence pretty much describes everything in Japan. They NEED to be told what to buy lol - literally.

How could you buy something if you aren't told that EVERYONE else thinks it is super kakkoii and / or kawaii, too?

It's an oddly conformist place, in some aspects~
