So if Jlousa is right, the Apple Store could go where the parking entrance is beside the Hotel Vancouver?

Also, in reference to some people thinking that the PC Apple Store would close, let's not forget that Guess has 3 stores on Robson as well as one in PC. :haha:

I'm sure that the most profitable retailer around these days with a $100 billion bank account could manage both leases. ;)

Who the hell would think they would close PC?!!!!!

Currently at that stores dollar per sqr footage they could feasibly open 4 stores in a 5 block radius and still need more.

does apple own the ipod signs in HMV? its probably why they got left behind - HMV can't sell em off since they don't own them and just leaves them behind when they move out

Having looked at the Robson side of the store tonight, the iPod signage seems to be the only one that is actually physically attached to the above HMV signage via two conduits.

Some big changes coming to The Bay in Mens White space will be on the 6th floor. Renovated to the same look as Womens white space. Housing big brand names like Diesel, Superdry and new brands coming in like Miss Sixty/Energie and Theory etc...

6th floor, seriously!? Now thats going to be a big pain going up there for mens fashion. Do you know why they chose the 6th floor?

I would gladly go up to the 6th floor if that means better selection of clothes and a nicer shopping experience. The current set up is dingy at best. I am glad to see they are putting money into it.

Men's floor there is 6th floor (actually maybe it's 6th and 7th). Building has similar vibe (or the potential). Leave the hordes and masses of people buying makeup and jewelry on the lower floors, I say.

Not sure why they're moving to the 6th floor, but I was just at The Bay and got confirmation that the entire 6th floor will become the new men's floor. Men's White Space will be on the South side of the 6th floor.

$24mill is earmarked for the store's interior and exterior renovations. Expect twice as much to 'finish' the store.

A Burberry boutique and other concessions are set to open on the ground floor. Longchamp, unfortunately, will go into Holt Renfrew, not The Bay. Valet parking will be moved to a new entrance on Seymour Street, and jewelry will eventually be carried where Olympic merchandise is currently housed on the ground floor. Women's shoes on the 2nd floor may be moved to expand women's contemporary designer department (including possibly a Hugo Boss Black women's shop).

The current women's contemporary department will receive a minor renovation, as they're not happy with the paint color used near the elevators and behind the contemporary 'payment area'. Two walls will be removed, from what I've been told.

Sounds like some very major changes are about to begin at The Bay in Vancouver, and they're already clearing out some rooms on the 6th and other floors.

Any indication if the cafeteria/restaurant will remain on the 6th floor (in some form - i.e. Oliver & Bonacini Restaurants (or did they already do that)?).

I heard that logistics weren't considered when the space was built and it's not feasible to run a restaurant out of the space (i.e. deliveries, etc.)

As it is now you have the Skytrain crowd and the mall crowd rolling through there, so maybe a floor dedicated to men's clothing would give it a more upscale feel even if the product line wasn't expanded. I'll definitely check it out.

they have been given notice. they are going to have to move .... I can see them taking street space where ever they do.

i read on some retail news site last year that nespresso was looking for a new downtown location cause they would be leaving the bay sometime when their lease ended

i think a stand alone on the street for them would be much better it doesn't really seem like a cafe in the bay more of a sales demonstration space

officedweller
Feb 9, 2012, 8:31 AM
I never knew that was an actual cafe - I thought it was a demonstration kitchen set-up.

I agree that it will be hard to get men to travel all the way to the 6th floor for clothing - especially since clothing needs high traffic (compared to china/crystal, electronics or furniture) - and people unfamiliar with the store will think that the mall level is all there is and not go to 6th.

Anyone remember eaton's failed relocation of men's wear to the 2nd floor (with young men's staying on the mall level)? and then when Sears took over it was returned to the mall level?

cc85
Feb 9, 2012, 3:30 PM
Sears and The Bay offer different styles of men's clothes and the people buying them have different perspectives wrt purchasing clothes. Those who enjoy wearing well-made, semi-expensive clothes will make the effort to go up 6 floors. Whereas those who don't care so much about what they wear will likely pick up something that they need (jeans, dress pants) when they walk past the men's section.

Feb 9, 2012, 5:29 PM
If there were windows looking out, they could create a restaurant floor up there. Take advantage of the height for when people are sitting and eating, not shopping, where you don't want people to be distracted by the outside world.

I don't know if this would work there, but if marketed well, it may get more foot traffic through the store. It's the Japanese model.

Given Pacific centre's lacklustre food court, it may be a good opportunity.

vancityrox
Feb 9, 2012, 6:52 PM
Well the plan is to re do the Seymour Room into a nice restaurant on the 6th floor. I think that this can help attract people to that floor.
Top-shop and Top man being on the mall level is perfect for Pacific Centre and it will give H&M a run for their money.
@SpongeG: Major Home Fashion and electronics from the 6th will join the 5th floor. Everything on 5th right now will stay but downsize to accommodate Furniture. :)

jacob has moved to its new location next to sears in pacific centre, its old location is vacant with no signage of whats to go in, there is also another vacant spot next to la senza - was a calendar store around christmas time

esprit is shutting down all of its canadian stores - the richmond centre store was having a big closeout sale - not much left at all - that will leave a large vacancy in metrotown in the dead part of the mall

also at richmond centre - HMV is closed and gone and empty, the food court redo is underway - only half the food court is currently open the other half is well boarded up making room for the new "terrace"

was at lansdowne mall last week and it was packed - never seen it so busy - no idea why, there are still many empty spots, but there was a new camera shop in there - i think it was broadway camera, looks like they left aberdeen and went to lansdowne...

also h-mart has opened at aberdeen, its very small but was jam packed with shoppers, the NCIX expansion has opened its not connected to the main store - but seems to be a samsung specialty shop

giordano is smaller as BC medical is taking over a lot of its space, izzue is really quite nice - they have some cool stuff, prices are a little higher but not too bad - they had some special issue dr martens - an izzue/doc martens collaboration - the whole store was about 40% off - number of shoppers inside

Edmonton and Vancouver will get a dose of Americana chic this spring, as iconic retailer J. Crew is set to open two new stores in the Canadian cities.

Following on the heels of the brand’s first Canadian store – which opened to much fanfare in Toronto’s Yorkdale Mall last August – a two-floor, 5,953-square-foot Vancouver outpost is planned for Robson Street, while the single-floor, 5,657-square-foot Edmonton store will be located in the West Edmonton Mall. (A second Toronto location is planned for this fall, to be housed in the Eaton Centre.)

The pricing is wrong. You can’t price them like cupcakes- the pricing, and crappy quality, is why the cupcake fad is almost gone. There is a place north of Seattle in Mill Creek called Frost - they do the gourmet donuts thing much like this new place. They are really good, but the reason why they will stick around is that they are around $1.50 each...$3 is way too much.

At $3 I would try once or twice, at $1.50 at Fost I make a point of heading off the I-5 to Mill Creek on my way to Seattle to pick up a half dozen for the rest of the trip.

i'd keep an eye on the old shoppers drug mart space on south granville - it would fit well there and they would have all their shops in one area
Whatever is going in there is using some massive wood beams-I saw them being hauled into the store last month.

i read on an article about the pacific palisades that shifeon will be one of the main retail tenants along with CB2 - so that means they will be moving from their space next to the old esprit soon i guess, their lease is expiring there anyway

also went to dollar giant today - they use dollar tree bags now, their receipts have said dollar tree for a while but they still used the dollar giant bags, i wonder when and if they will change all the signage to dollar tree - i have notcied too that some of their merchandise is actually a bit better and more brand names on some things - much like dollar tree in the states

Fields, which started in Vancouver in 1950, and is part of the bay and zellers, will be closing all 141stores across canada. All their current locations will probably be taken over by dollar stores im sure.

You see them mostly in suburban settings.

However, here's one in Vancouver (http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=fields&ll=49.250551,-123.104553&spn=0.122137,0.257492&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&fb=1&gl=ca&hq=fields&hnear=Vancouver,+Greater+Vancouver+Regional+District,+British+Columbia&t=m&z=12&layer=c&cbll=49.227824,-123.090695&panoid=ybO0IUPMbsDy8RtSOZVaWw&cbp=12,247.97,,0,-0.6):

I didn't know about Fields until I treeplanted up north. Isn't there one on Fraser though? I can't imagine that the small town ones could be replaced by dollar stores. They are more akin to mini department stores there, and often the only places you can buy certain things.

Too many stores selling the same things that only seem to get sold to display suites?

Fields and Saan were the two "junior" departyment staore chains in Nanaimo in the 197os and 80s.

They have been usurped by WalMart and Zellers (now Target).

I could see them surviving in smaller markets where a larger format store would not open.

Urban barn on Howe is closing. Big sales on now

They're closing on the 31st due to the location being too small. They will re-open a larger store but not for a while. Timing is off due to lease expiration. Currently looking at 4 different locations, I couldn't find out which ones unfortunately.

I don't think I've ever seen a Fields store..

There's been one up on Fraser St for aeons but they're usually found in smaller communities as mentioned.

I forgot heavy wool sox when fishing the Squamish River one cold winter morning so drove into town and checked out the Fields there.

I'd never seen a dirtier more disorganised excuse for a store-goods were literally piled on the floor everywhere and Staff didn't give a shit/liked to let customers know they didn't give a shit.

Naturally I've never been back and I'm sure Squamish residents are glad to see the back of them.

They were from a different time. I remember when I was a kid, Kingsgate Mall had a Fields and a block or two away on Main street was the Woolworth. There were several more Fields around the lower mainline together with Woolworth they were the local neighborhood mini-department store. Now Walmart and Zellers has taken over that market.

There was also a Fields on the NE corner of Hastings and Abbott (now an empty lot which just last week became a parkade) and one also on the NE corner of Kingsway and Knight (now a dollar store).
There was also one in Metrotown by the old food court next to Circuit Circus.

Does anyone know what is going on at the old KFC at Hastings and Alpha in Burnaby? It's been closed for a few months, and has been undergoing work for the last few weeks. They seem to have pulled down the old KFC signs sometime this week. Given that there are plumbing contractor signs posted on the rent-a-fence, I don't think that they're ripping the building down.

Signs went up last week - it's becoming an A&W.

According to the DVBIA twitter account. An international retailer is close to signing/announcing the take over of the old HMV spot on Robson/Burrard.

I guess that rules out Simons. Perhaps UNIQLO? I don't know who else it can be. Abercombie? I know it isn't Victoria's secret that's for sure.:D

Using purely my powers of guesswork (because I have absolutely no inside information on such matters), I am predicting that Victoria's Secret will be taking the space which is supposedly going to be built in place of the Pacific Centre "igloo" entrance on the Northeast corner of Howe and Georgia.

I wouldn't be surprised if the space was leased by Abercrombie since they have been trying to find space for years.

I think it was mentioned (or rumoured) a couple months back, but Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn have both done deals in the expansion of Park Royal Village at 26,000 sf and 12,000 sf respectively. Who knows when Larco will actually start going on construction though, they said Fall 2011, but absolutely nothing has happened (except moving some tenants out).

another book store chain bites the dust :(

Book Warehouse to shut doors after 32 years

Book Warehouse, one of Metro Vancouver's largest independent discount book retailers, is closing its four stores.

The decision is being called another blow to B.C.'s independent book store industry, which is facing sharp competition from larger book retailers, Amazon, and e-book sales.

“This is not very good,” said Margaret Reynolds, executive-director of the Association of Book Publishers of B.C. “We keep losing more and more independents.

“Book Warehouse was a general trade bookstore, so it purchased in a wide range of genres [and] had a considerable presence in the city. It was an avenue for literary, general trade and scholarly publishers and offered a wide range of titles.”

Book Warehouse was founded in 1980 and focused on providing bargain books such as overstocks, reprints, slightly damaged books, samples, bankruptcy stock and special imports.

Founder and part-owner Sharman King said their decision to close was not because of economics.

“All our leases are up about the same time and I'm 65 years old,” he said Thursday of his company, which has stores in Vancouver and North Vancouver. “Everything has its time. It's been fun for 32 years. [We said] let's stop it while it's still fun.”

King said partners Tommy Banks and wife Diana King are also getting older and that it was a joint decision to close the stores, which employ 40 people.

If the right buyer came along, he added, they'd consider selling. “We have relationships with people who are in the business of selling businesses. Beyond that, I can't comment.”

As someone who loves A&W I'm pretty excited about this! North Burnaby's only A&W is the one in the Brentwood food court, so only open mall hours!
