More stations are starting to install electronic signs I've been noticing. Especially those with hard to reach sign boards (such as the Safeway gas bar here... the sign was located on the edge of the canopy over the pumps, meaning you literally had to get up on a ladder that rested on about 3 inches of siding below the sign to change it)

As for price, it dropped to 79.9 in Cochrane on Saturday, but as low as 72.9 in Calgary.

Gas price all about the market
Lindsay Lafraugh | December 4, 2008 | The Chronicle-Journal
http://www.chroniclejournal.com/top_story.php?id=151194

Drivers in Thunder Bay may be used to paying more for fuel than those living in the southern part of the province, but many people are asking whether the discrepancy is fair.
In recent weeks the price of a litre of regular gas has dropped across the province, giving drivers in Thunder Bay the chance to buy fuel for less than $1 per litre for the first time in nine months.
On Wednesday, price tracking website GasBuddy.com showed the lowest price of gas in Thunder Bay was 89.5 cents per litre while the highest was 93.2 cents.
In Toronto, drivers were seeing prices as low as 75.5 cents per litre, according to the website.
The Shell Canada website explains that the price of a litre of its gasoline is made up of:
• 40-55 per cent crude oil costs (the raw material for making gasoline and diesel fuel).
• 25-35 per cent federal, provincial and municipal taxes, and GST.
• 10-25 per cent is the refiner‘s margin (the difference between what it costs to buy crude oil and the price refined gasoline sells for in the wholesale market which, in turn, is influenced by supply and demand).
• 4-6 per cent to the marketing (or retail) margin that covers retail stations‘ expenses and profits.
Spencer Knipping, oil adviser with the Ontario Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, said in an interview with The Chronicle-Journal that Northern Ontarians should not be comparing pump prices with those in the lower part of the province because their gas isn‘t always coming from the same place and local market conditions are very different.
He explained that Thunder Bay is most often supplied with fuel from refineries in western Canada – Edmonton and Regina, for example.
“So if supply demands in western Canada push up wholesale prices, then Thunder Bay will feel the impact of those wholesale prices at the pump,” he said.
Knipping said that even when fuel does come from refineries in southern Ontario like those in Sarnia, it takes longer to get here and longer to sell. There are simply more people buying gas in southern Ontario, allowing a cheaper product to enter the market and effect customers more quickly.

Michael Ervin, an analyst with MJ Ervin & Associates, a Calgary-based consulting firm that provides perspectives on petroleum marketing, said the average station in Toronto pumps close to 10 million litres of fuel per year, while the average Thunder Bay station pumps closer to five to six million litres per year.
“Thunder Bay generally has somewhat higher wholesale to retail markups than in other big cities because (stations are) pumping fewer volumes of gasoline per station . . . so there is generally a bit more markup in gasoline in Thunder Bay than in a city like Toronto for example,” he said.
He too said the lengthy process of getting fuel to the city can keep prices higher in Thunder Bay than in cities closer to refineries.
“Logistically, product takes a lot longer to get to Thunder Bay and so a lot of the product in the retailer‘s tanks is still at a higher price relative to the retail inventories in the tanks where the station is just half an hour down the road from the refinery,” he said.
Currently, Thunder Bay‘s sole distribution terminal has about 50 per cent of its fuel coming from western Canada, the other half from Sarnia.
Terminal manager Al Hamilton said that when fuel comes from Sarnia via the St. Lawrence Seaway, it takes about 40 hours for a shipment to get to Thunder Bay. Shipments via rail from western Canada take between one and two weeks to arrive.
He said from Jan. 1 to April 1, when the seaway is closed, shipments from southern Ontario stop. Throughout the rest of the year, the volume coming from southern Ontario varies.
Price wars also play into varying gas prices, said Knipping, an activity that is much more frequent in Toronto than in Thunder Bay.
“Price wars start when one dealer lowers their price to gain volume. Other dealers will match the price because consumers are very price sensitive,” he said. “When a price war starts to do damage, dealers will raise their price back. If the other dealers follow suit, the price goes up sharply when the price war ends.”
He said when a price war is going on in a southern Ontario city like Toronto, and there is no war in Thunder Bay, the price discrepancy can be exaggerated.
During his reign as Thunder Bay mayor, former Thunder Bay-Rainy River Liberal MP Ken Boshcoff took a look into gas prices when he created a team of community members in 1999 who wrote letters to all major gas companies asking why Thunder Bay‘s prices were so high.
“We wrote to the president of every oil company who ended up sending representatives to us with their dog and pony, and explaining how hard done by they were,” Boshcoff recalled during an interview with The Chronicle-Journal.
He said if he had of been re-elected MP in the October election, he would have brought forward a private members bill that would have put enforcement teeth into the Competition Bureau, an independent Canadian law enforcement agency that investigates complaints and monitors businesses for fair practices.
“Every item of correspondence says that it is up to the individual . . . to prove there is gouging and I am saying . . . it should be the government who is proving the gouging,” he said.
Mayor Lynn Peterson said Tuesday that in the next few weeks she plans to have letters written to major gas companies about pricing.
She said the topic will also be brought up in discussions with local MPs and MPPs.
“We‘ve been looking at the cost of gas. Obviously crude costs have gone down, have plummeted actually, in the last little while,” she said.

OPEC is keeping the junkie hooked along with speculators. Gotta love how they reacted when the world economy started to melt down. I have become even more skeptical of the information fed to us about oil prices, even educated economists who make intelligent sounding reasons for the oil prices can be full of total crap. Demand for oil is slightly down by the slightest of margins, and its still being used heavily in the demanding world, so how the heck did oil just drop to $40?

It was a rhetorical question, so don't try to answer if you must... I've heard all the "reasons" by talking heads on CNBC, blogs, web news articles, etc. They all seem a little chaotic to me.

Its certainly not a simple "supply and demand" economy, but its not like I have the answers either. LOL

I don't think its a matter of not being pissed off enough, but what can you do? They will put the price up or down as they see fit, it don't matter how angry you get, it won't do any good. The government says they want to see why gas prices were so high. They are the reason the price was so high with all the taxes they put on gas. Just like alcohol. The claim its all (or even just mostly due to taxes) is laughable, especially considering a lot of the tax is a fixed amount per litre, not a percentage that will increase as price goes up. Really only the GST/HST/PST are percentages, all the excise taxes, provincial taxes, etc, are a fixed amount.

SpongeG

well vancouver has an 11 cent translink tax on all gas in the metro and the BC gove't has a 2 cent carbon tax on all gas in BC - its a fixed amount not a %

so in abbotsford which is not part of the GVRD gas is always much cheaper

Tax Rates

Rates in Effect at this date

The Act imposes a tax on a purchaser at the rate of:

* 14.7 cents per litre of unleaded gasoline
* 17.7 cents per litre of leaded gasoline
* 4.3 cents per litre of propane
* 2.7 cents per litre of aviation fuel

http://www.rev.gov.on.ca/english/bulletins/gt/gas1_2003.html#Tax

I'm sorry, but the tax isn't that much. If you removed the tax from the prices, Thunder Bay would still be 20c more expensive per litre than Toronto!

EXCUSE ME!! so I didn't mean its ALL tax, don't take much does it? All I was saying is that the gas would be alot cheaper if there wasn't so much tax on our gas. I will be more careful on how i word things.

Gas went up here 3 cents per litre, then dropped one cent now 73.9
Crude oil is just over 36.00 per barrel yesterday, apparently it went below 36.00 at some point.

I understand that prices would still be 20cents more than Toronto, because they would remove the taxes in Toronto too. It sucks that you have to pay such high prices and the only thing you can do about it is move.
