Hamilton gas at 68 cents
Four-year low at the pumps
December 24, 2008
Jackson Hayes
The Hamilton Spectator
http://www.thespec.com/News/Local/article/486637
Drivers are enjoying an early Christmas gift this morning as the price at the pump dropped again overnight to a level not seen since 2004.
Many stations in the city are selling gas at 68 cents a litre for regular unleaded.
This drop of a few pennies from yesterday was predicted by Liberal MP Dan McTeague who credited “a wholesale/refinery price difference from the benchmark WTI crude/NYMEX gasoline market” for the tumble.
Oil prices have been on an extraordinary roller coaster ride this year.
During the summer, the price per barrel hit an all time high over $145, only to fall steadily since.
Oil closed under $40/barrel yesterday as concerns of a global economic downturn may reduce the demand.

Hamilton residents are getting a belated Christmas present - a price drop at the gas pumps.
Prices have fallen to 65 and 66 cents per litre. They're likely to stay low until after New Years.
A number of gas stations in the Toronto area ran out of fuel yesterday, the lingering result of a series of snowstorms that walloped the city earlier this week. Daily refills were cancelled after a series of storms snarled delivery efforts, affecting gas stations throughout the city.

Well, you could spend your time complaining about 60-80 cents being too high, or you can just enjoy it while it lasts, before the big Oil execs decide to jack the price up back to near $1.50/litre and then start to complain that you wish the gas was back down to around 60-80 cents/litre.

Calgary's down to the mid to high 60's now, couple down closer to 62 cents.
Gas is finally averaging below 85c here. I sure hope some of that is going to taxes so that we at least get something out of it! This is really getting ridiculous. Some places in Southern Ontario are below 60 cents.
They say the price is higher because of the distance. Well it's 20 cents less in Kenora and Rainy River and that's only two hours away! It's like there is a magic 20c per litre added cost as soon as you turn onto 102.

wheres the closest refinery to you Vid?
Probably Sarnia or somewhere in Alberta. They use that as their excuse but the difference between Thunder Bay and Kenora is too great. As soon as it cross the magic boundary between the two districts the price goes up 20 cents.
http://www.ontariogasprices.com/Price_By_County.aspx?state=ON&c=can
In the summer, we get gas by boat from Sarnia and by train from Alberta. In the winter, we only get it by train from Alberta. But so does Kenora. Why is Kenora so much cheaper? (Especially considering that more than a quarter of its population lives in communities accessible only by air, where gas costs about 5$ a litre and milk is just a dream.)

Well, I was hoping that my winking smiley would have tipped the sarcastically challenged (such as yourself) to note that I was being...um....sarcastic in my bragging. The reason I have a E85 car is not so much because for the environment but rather that humans should diversify the fuels they use for motor vehicles.
I am interested to know if Canada has more ethanol fueling stations stations in the rest of Canada. I cannot find any on the internet so I was hoping that users would know more.
As an "environmentalist", I would rather we used oil than ethanol, considering ethanol takes too many resources away from the food supply. Oil for cars. Corn for people.

...which, like corn, is grown from incident solar energy on the earth. Given an average (and should I mention, limited by area) solar intensity of 100 - 200 W/m^2 -- fuels from biomass take away land area which would otherwise be used for food stock.

No price manipulation? Yeah, we believe you.
It takes six months for a barrel of oil to be refined into gasoline, from the time its purchased by the oil company.
They also say that prices are lower in places with more competition. I guess Dryden (7,800 people and dropping every day) has more competition than Thunder Bay (which is actually growing, albeit very slowly).

His complaint was about oil producers. If he was mad at the refining/marketing operations, then his point would be slightly so more valid.
There is a big problem with "industry outsiders" who don't understand the complete system of an integrated operation, including the inherent volatility in refining differentials.

My father has been working in management at Petro-Canada for over 30 years and he ensures me that the current prices are over inflated bullshit right now. Also this "complex" system still does not *legitimately* explain why when the price of oil increases, the price of gas increases with it immediately, yet when the price goes down, it takes weeks and months to fall. It is called a monopoly, having it both ways, etc... Sure they give us dumb ass excuses and what you just said with the *but it is so technical* bull shit.

I'm still waiting for a logical explanation from someone in the oil and gas field as to why prices are rising at the pump yet oil prices are at an all time low.
My thoughts; oil companies have been used to these higher prices for the last decade or so, and are unwilling to give up any kind of profits and return back to the supply and demand regime. It's like someone going from a salary of $50,000/yr to $200,000 in 10 years, and then they are told their salary is being cut back down to $50,000/yr. They just aren't willing to go back to making less.
In other words; pure and utter greed.
Oh, and before anyone goes and says "well would you want to take that pay cut?", you know exactly the point that I'm getting at, so don't bother to twist my words around. Thanks.

Feb 15, 2009, 7:04 AM
with your guys logic, if oil were $1 a barrel then a liter would cost 1 cent. there are costs involved with production and in the supply chain. changes in price per barrel and price per liter are never going to be a 1:1 ratio
i'm glad the prices haven't gone down as much as you guys want. and in all seriousness i cant wait until the price goes back up to 2008 levels, or higher. our outrageous car culture needs to get cut down a bit.
