New Page
This only too me a little over an hour, so like I said before, expect Hutchinson to be back where it was by Friday.
-Today I just started making the grid for the city, and built 2 Hutchinson Square.
-I also put together a map to show the new layout. Not much change, except for size, and few other minor things.
2 Hutchinson Square: (All the billboards were made by me, no photoshop:D)

Thats simply orgasmic!
I found the problem: My buildings are actually 11188' high. So the file is HUGE!
I knew something just didnt look right, but I said the buildings where too small :haha:

excellent on how you've manufactured all the billboards, very unique and efficient style of detailing.. and how fortuite seeing Martina Hingis next to Obama.
better spend time drawing all yourself than waiting for it to render, right?
Anyway I see a monumental future of Stauntonian proportions for your metropolis :worship:
Kudos on the 11K posts and the 11Kft buildings! :haha:
But Speaking of Hutchinson Island and of a still surviving landmark, the statue of liberty was donated by france but the base was American design. I don't know which I like best.
In the future you could hold a competition, judged only by you, and the winner can place a building/landmark somewhere in your city.
Anyways

As for going back to SU5, as long as you never saved the file while in SU6, you can still open it with 5. That's what I did, I never saved it. (Though I also saved a backup just in case.)
That's unfortunate that you have to start over, but if it makes Hutchinson and Chamberlin even better, that's awesome!

That's not a bad idea. I was actually planning something for the island, but if it doesn't work out, I could resort to the competition.

I think I'll stay with 6 being that I got everything on par. Sadly though in this process, I can no longer use Chamberlin (the original) being that the scales are way too off. Oh well, thats life, but I intend to remake it after I finish with Hutch. Good news is that I have the buildings to refer back to.

Nov 10, 2007, 6:00 PM
Well, I'm starting over yet again. I'm using the same layout, but the grid was way too big (streets were 200 ft wide). I've got it all worked out though, so expect a pic of the new grid tonight!
Sorry about all this guys. I just want to make everything in proportion so I never have to run into those lag problems again. I'll make it all worth the wait.

make the grid, cut out a section of the grid and use seperate files!!:) I dont have any lag problems that way.
Aleks
Nov 10, 2007, 7:04 PM
That's what I'm doing ton a new city, I made a HUGE grid and the city is almost 10,000 feet long and 5,000 feet wide. So I chose "districts" and deleted all other block outside of the district boundary. For instance, I'm working on the Historic district because it's the oldest and the first one I finished.
Just do the same thing, that way you can add detail to your buildings even more.
Dac150
Nov 10, 2007, 7:33 PM
Thank you for the advice guys. The only problem I'm running into now is thinking up designs for the buildings.
Aleks
Nov 10, 2007, 7:44 PM
That happens to me sometimes but I always solve it by looking at pictures, books, etc.... I also try to get inspiration from various places rather than one, two, or three cities.
Look at pictures from China, they have pretty nice new skyscrapers, and Hello,,,,New York.

That's the problem. I want to be as original as possible. I'll sneak a few NYC based highrises in there, but I'm going to stay away from the obvious stuff (Conde Nast, Citigroup Center, etc..).
Aleks
Nov 10, 2007, 7:59 PM
Well you can still do that, like my entry for the complex competition; the tallest tower was inspired by the proposed Girasol Tower near the Empire State Building. The medium one was inspired by the Smith Tower here in Seattle, and the Grand Hyatt was inspired by a building U/C in Philly.

Actually you can do that, just click edit on the first post (which is your obviously) and then click "advanced" and there you will see the title at the top. Just delete the current title (which is Chamberlin, New Jersey) and type in "The Hitchinson Metro Area"
Do you want to try or do you want me to do it?

good so far :)
are you making them from memory or copying them over?
Dac150
Nov 13, 2007, 5:37 PM
Making them from memory. If I copied them into this file, then the buildings from the old one would be like 10 times the size of what I'm building now. That's why the old one lagged, the file was way too big.

(1818 Dyckman Avenue): The News Corporation Building. 1818 Dyckman was constructed in 1965 to hold the News Corporation Hutchinson Branch. In addition to News Corporation offices, the building also houses many studios for the FOX News Network, Hutchinson's 4 local news stations, 7 radio stations, and other TV studios.
At the bottom of the building facing Dyckman Avenue is a sculpture of the globe, and a media ticker at the entrance. Facing 20th Street there is a media wall. On the rooftop of the "wedding cake" section is the outdoor studio where portions of "Good Morning Hutchinson" are filmed daily. There is also an underground concourse which links the building with 1919, 1717, 2020 Dyckman, and the Dyckman Avenue Mall.

Ok, yesterday on the train ride home I finished up the TRI Center. The TRI Center is the World HQ of TRI (Tolland Ryder Industries), and is based off the MetLife Building (obviously) and the Ren. Center in Detroit.
The Background:
In 1963, TRI announced the need for another HQ in Hutchinson being that their current one wasn't big enough for the expanding company. TRI made an agreement with the city of Hutchinson to buy the square parcel of land smack in the middle of the city. In the construction, they had to demolish the original Hutchinson Central Station. The plan was for a new station to be built underneath the compund. And so it happened. TRI built their new HQ (the TRI Building), and left the large podium alone, so if the need ever came to build more, they'd be able to.
In the 1970's, TRI expanded to the financial and Investment industries, which called for more room. With that, two buildings were added (twins) that housed the branches. The same occurance happened in the early 80's and two more buildings were constructed, one for the shipping branch, and the other a 5 star Hotel (The Tolland Palaca) named after one of the co-founders of TRI: Arthur Tolland.
Today in addition to the new Hutchinson Central Station, there is a total of 5 buildings in the complex. Underground there is a vast retail and dining concourse that connects to neighboring buildings. Above ground also going sub is the TRI Center Mall, and added perk for the city for approving the project. In addition to the mall, concourse, station, office, and hotel uses, the center also has vast trading and conference space in the podiums.

The main tower is 65 floors, and the other four are 45 floors.

Is it a pool or fountain?
So 65 floors would be around 850 feet? Or am I wrong?

That's no 'swimming' pool infront, it's a reflecting pool.:haha: And yes, 850' is correct.

Coolness....
So, is the Hutchinson station the only in the city? Or will there be more?

No, Hutchinson Central station is the main metro rail hub (that goes to other cities, and serves localy), but there are 2 others (one in Hutchinson, and the other in Albom). Yet to be named or built by me.
As for other rail services, there is a subway, mono-rail system, elevated borough connector service, the Chamberlin-Hutchinson connector, and Delaware transit connection service lines. The whole project will take a long time for me to build.

Wow, did you ever consider becoming a city planner? Your good at it.
I too have ideas when about commute when I work in my cities but I end up getting bored so I don't finish trains, highways, etc....
Hey! You and me are currently working on a rail station!

Thank you, but with wanting to be a real estate developer comes much project planning with regards to the project itself as well as the neighboring area. I guess that's where my skill comes from. A lot of the projects I'm working on (intended for real life) are much involved with urban attachment, therefore the need to include transit, public spaces, retail, underground facilities is needed (all of which I enjoy planning and incorporating with my work).
No, right now I'm just trying to get the skyline in a resepctable state. Once I get the bulk of Midtown done, I'm going to start in infastructure (highways, bridges, tunnels, rail, airports, etc...) then move to downtown development. But they'll be a 2 week halt between when I have to go back to school and Christmas break.

Well, no matter what you're working on I bet it'll look good.
A lot of your buildings looks over 150 feet wide. Maybe try making thin buildings like Trump or something. I like Trump (the tall, black skinny one not the one with the steps).
P.S: This off topic but I'm listening to Panic at The Disco, which I love!!

Panic by the 'Smith's'? Good song.
Your thinking of Trump World Tower. One of my favorite buildings of all time. I'll mix up the sizes for sure, but right now I'm working in the Central Business District, so what with all the corporations, result in the large corporate slabs.

Not many comments.:(
Oh well, I didn't have time to put together an update today, but I did manage to work on the city for about 20 minutes. Not enough to waste an update on, so here is just a pic.

Just moved the screen (of the program) up on my monitor. You can get some pretty cool perspective shots.

Yeah, it's cool how SketchUp works. It exports whatever is on the screen, so if you you shrink it up like that, that's what it exports. I've gotten some awesome panos since I have two monitors. :hyper:
Cool shot.

Post' em u fox! I didnt know it worked with such coolness. I was trying to do some "real" panos stitching em.
DAC: I feel like spensing a night at the Tolland Palace. You should now try with a Lindbergh palace (haha Wes Anderson did in that movie to New York what you are doing to it now with Hutch-Chamb!)
