I use GIMP to process my photos but I don't do anything drastic, just basic stuff like levels and sharpening.

No, the atmosphere in Hess Village is pretty laid-back. Security staff from several of the bars asked me if I was from the media. They have to be careful about negative publicity from the local media. They were all good about it and I even chatted with some of the staff and got some free stuff.

You've just described nightlife in Hamilton to a tee! Well, save for the "lurid" cars, perhaps.

I've always loathed Hess Village. On warm weekends it's filled with frat boy types and general losers whose only purpose is to get drunk and fight. There may be one or two bars/pubs in the Village that aren't filled with hefty heifers in jean skirts of the sort you see in these photos, but I don't know where they are, and I don't care.

If you have even the slightest inkling toward non-mainstream revelry or alcoholic imbibing then you need to give the Village a miss and head on over to Augusta. Specifically, the Winking Judge. I think the Judge is the only place in Hamilton (Ontario? Canada? the world?) without television sets blaring all the time. You can actually walk in by yourself, have a drink, and get into wide-ranging conversations with regulars about everything from the Napoleonic wars to the finer points of beer-making. It's that unique.

Oh, I also quite miss the Raven, which was on John and Augusta. That place was atmospheric up the wazoo. The Underground, its successor, doesn't hold a candle to it.

Oct 4, 2007, 4:10 AM
^ You've pretty much described the new emerging Augusta entertainment area. It's an area for older...erm more mature individuals. All the more pubs and restaurants the better for me, more choices.

There's also Corktown.

I was there from 10-11pm on a Saturday, people were still eating and the bands were just starting. Shoulda went around midnight, but it was already getting difficult to take pictures on the crowded sidewalk, 90% of the shots I took have people walking in front of the camera.

PS: I have Augusta Street pics, but I'm saving them for an upcoming thread. It'll be a good one.

Gallagher's is going where Raven used to be!
They're going to have room for 43 outside!! Will look really kewl kitty-corner to Fox & Fiddle!

And Corktown really is jumpin with restaurants & pubs... we lack almost completely in Cafes tho :(

We keep using Montreal & Ottawa as examples for why Hamilton should pedestrianize Gore Park, yet we have a perfect example of how well a pedestrianized street can work in our own back yard:

N'or do the fights. This 'district' is notorious for unprovoked, senseless violence. A friend of mine was jumped for touching a girl's hand as he walked by recently. Her drunkenly-angry boyfriend was not happy.

You're not missing much, dude. Che is alright. I still prefer Absinthe (which, btw, is moving into the old Pepper Jack's on King William in the New Year).
Absinthe Lounge in Hess (on George St) needs a lot of Promo.. I don't know why they don't even try.

Stress Village! I hate that place, it was good back about 12 years ago not as much unprovoked violence and nonsense everyone was cool and we had fun.. I worked security back then in Hess and couldn't imagine having to do it now, I will never step foot in Hess again not only because of the crowd but I wouldn't give a dime to a couple of the club/pub owners in that place...I'll stick to going to Augusta these day's.
