The Pearl District and Goose Hollow in Portland are among the best places to retire, according to cnn.com.

CNN's money.cnn.com looked at 30 of the country's largest metro areas and selected 35 areas as the best neighborhoods in which to retire.

The Pearl District received good marks for the close availability of book readings, cooking classes and art galleries. Other pluses are the Portland Streetcar, Max light-rail and nearby Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital.

A con noted was construction noise from new high-rise buildings.

The Web site pointed out that a 1,000-square-foot condo will set you back $400,000 to $500,000 and a one-bedroom apartment goes for $1,500 a month.

Goose Hollow was cited for its "old neighborhood charm." A two-bedroom condo can be had for $300,000.

"If your idea of being in the 'thick of it' means living near 150-foot redwoods, consider one of the many neighborhoods in and near the leafy hills on the city's western edge," the Web site comments.

"One, Goose Hollow, is walking distance to Washington Park, which is home to the Japanese Garden, the International Test Rose Garden and the Hoyt Arboretum. As one of the original residential areas in Portland, Goose Hollow is marked by turn-of-the-century homes, local institutions like the Goose Hollow Inn and Leaky Roof pub."
